Tried a search, but wasnt exactly sure how to word it.  I would have expected this question to have come up before, but here goes anyway....

Is there any harm in putting a card setup for, say, 5D2 ML, into your 5D3, and vice versa?   Since both are set to autoboot from the card, would it look at the ML.fir and realize its not the right version and just ignore it?

Basically just wondering if i need to separate my cards so these are only for the 2 and those are only for the 3.

thanks.

You can't do this, the autoexec.bin (compiled binary) are different for each camera. The fir has nothing to do with it, the fir is just for enabling the bootflag, ML runs from autoexec.bin. You need separate cards for each camera, don't mix them.

dont mix them because it will cause a camera problem? total meltdown?  or just because it wont work and the camera will load the normal Canon firmware?  obviously i wouldnt put a card with 5D2 ML into the 3 and expect it to work.  i just wanted to know if it was dangerous to the camera to do so.

It's none of those, the camera actually wont boot up (i.e. it won't even load the Canon firmware) you'll have to pull the battery and put a card w/o the bootflag enabled on it, or the correct autoexec.bin (or no card at all),

There was a feature request to have the camera boot into the canon firmware if the wrong autoexec.bin is detected, which is possible to do, but AFAIK it has not been implemented:

Bottom Line: Don't do it.
