Powerbank
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:44:01 AM »
Hi,

I need to know if anyone of your guys are using a powerbank with a coupler or some other solution to power your 5d mark iii.
All my batteries have cracked (probably due to overheating) so I am looking for another alternative than using batteries. Any suggestions?  :)

Hello ibrahim,

Sorry to hear about your batteries. Bummer. Here is a link to a product I use with my Canon 7D, and T3i: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1100255-REG/lanparte_pb_600_e6_e6_portable_battery_with.html

I have had no issues in the past two years of using these power banks. The product in the link provided works for the 5d Mark III as well :)

I’m using an adapter like this on my EOS M3. I haven’t checked on my 6D

But you need a least a Powerbank with 2.5 – 3A output.
Another problem of Powerbanks: They switch immediately off. You have to take care about it.

Hey ibrahim,

You're welcome! I've read mixed reviews of that product. Might be worth a try, but might be hard to return since I believe the seller is in China.

That's a lightweight and interesting solution c_joerg.
How many hours can you record on your 6d with the ML?

Where can I buy the components. Have you built it yourself or can it be bought as a whole?

Hey ibrahim,

I forgot to mention something. With the powerbank, you can take the leather cover off (has a clip, good for tripod use, but not run and gun), and attach industrial strength velcro to the bottom. Then put industrial strength velcro on a cheese plate. All you need is a 1/4" male thread to cold shoe adapter, and now you can add this to the top of your DSLR. If you want to use a mic, you can add an additional accessory. I'll link these below.

Hope this helps!

The 6d is new. I haven’t used on my 6D until now.
On my Canon G1x it works more than 6 hours. With normal 1.5V AA Batteries it work works even longer. I have also used 2 of them parallel.

Where can I buy the components.

Not sure if this link helps you

Another option is this

Have you built it yourself or can it be bought as a whole?
I only connect the cables from dummy batteries with the AA holder.

For me, the perfect solution to this problem was a printout of the finished housing layout and the purchase of 40 batteries at 2500 mAh each. Well and their connections.

@c_joerg I am also using one of those cheap CA-PS700 replacements with USB connector and an original Canon DR-E17 coupler.

It's working fine but I can't attest that it needs 2.5 – 3A as input. With my M5 it's even working from a USB 3.0 Port of my PC, which delivers 0.9A max. My USB amp meter says the camera is drawing about 0.6A.

Another idea for a power supply. A powerbank with quick charge. With 2 diodes and 2 resistors you have to generate directly 9V / 2A. With that, the cameras are getting along well.

My currently preferred solution for powering my camera is a power bank with quick charge and a quick charge USB tester. This tester then simulates a quick charge device.

I then operate the camera directly with the 9V and have an output power of 18W (9V / 2A). Alternatively, I could also operate a slider with 12V and a maximum of 1.5A.

Since there is only one DC / DC converter in this chain, the total power loss is about 15% lower. There is also no influence on two DC / DC converters.
Powerbanks with QC are available from € 10, which is significantly cheaper than powerbanks with 9V or 12V output.

Similar testers are also available for PD (Power Delivery). With the testers you should make sure that there is a slide switch and no buttons. Those with the buttons must be reprogrammed after each switch on.

Is the power supply connected directly through the battery dummy without any additional electronics inside?

Yes, I use the 9V directly.
The original power supply delivers approximately 8.4V.
The 9V are no problem for Canon. If in doubt, you could connect a diode in series.

I have now bought the following adapter:
https://lygte-info.dk/review/USBmeter%20QC2-QC3%20trigger%20UK.html

Work really well. They remember the last setting and you can use Quick Charge 3 to set the voltage in 0.2V steps.

I confirm that running directly your camera from a 9V power bank works perfectly, that's what I run when I have to take large amounts of pictures.

Just made a DIY AC adapter for 700D, followed these guides:
Code: [Select]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLeUN58gWq8
Code: [Select]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMGaj0k60dA
Edit: I used 470uF 16V Capacitor

I didn't find 7.5 Volt power adapter in local stores, I have AC to DC adapter with 9 Volt (actual output 9.25 V) 1.5A , I used three diodes to lower the voltage to 8.25 from 9.25, after I made the dummy battery and all related work (soldering, etc..) and powering on the camera, that gave me "Change Battery Pack" message with empty battery icon, So I removed one diode and it now the voltage was ~8.55, that made the camera boots with yellow battery indicator, then I removed one more diode --> this gave ~ 8.90 Volt, now the camera showed fully charged battery icon.

I can coniform 9 Volt works fine on 700D.

But has nothing to do with the topic of power banks, does it?

I bought my last dummy adapter for less than 5 € in China..

I would be careful if any definition is wrong you definitely can completely break your camera...

Rather power it with your gimbal.
