I recall some post about losing battery charge while the camera is off, and I get the impression that's happening on my 5D3 now. But I have no simple way to tell. If losing battery power during off mode is a real possibility due to ML features or bugs, some kind of diagnostic would be helpful.

How about a debug feature that records time and battery charge upon power off and power on, and then provides a metric in the debug menu?

"The battery lost X% charge in N minutes while last powered off".

The values would have to be reset if the charge value goes up (significantly), or the battery ID changes.

Doesn't make sense; when that happens, the camera will not power on without taking the battery out first.

I don't follow, when what happens?

To be clear, I'm talking about detecting a case when while the camera is off, the battery drops from, say, 90% to 70% charge.

Yes, if battery discharge would happen while the camera is off, you won't be able to power it back on without taking the battery out first.

It can happen if ML leaves DryOS in some inconsistent state (memory corruption or stuff like that).

Ok, so you're saying that if I can turn on the camera, then the battery must not have faded while powered off.

What about normal battery self-discharge? All batteries discharge a little bit over time. How much does the battery have to discharge before the camera will not power on without removal?

The question doesn't make sense; if the battery drains, it's because CPU got stuck (and it will no longer react to buttons).

Normal self-discharge should be quite small; if you want to write a battery diagnostic module, feel free to do so.

It sounds like abnormal battery-draining must be apocryphal. I'm glad!
