Excellent. I'll surely use this splendid video when teaching photo, it clarifies a bunch of issues in a very straightforward way - and the short live videos embedded are a thrill, so beautifully and carefully color graded. More, sir! More.

Excellent. Wonderful footage, great color. And an important issue, dealt with in an extraordinary manner. You caught a lot of what ptsd is about.

@DeafEyeJedi - I happen to see you as a totally competent cinematographer, and the way I read your post, you "drop the crop" for the time being, since you don't really know how much work you'll have to do in post, just like the clients want some footage tonight, and you won't have time for conversion from raw.
I'd say to you, as an old journalist to another old and wellproven veteran: Go ahead with SL1 and the M, if you feel they'll do the job with slomo and crop. Do it discretely but not secretly - you are the expert, and the clients should not interfere with your choice of cameras. Like when they go away from church in a limousine and want to dictate the brand of gasoline...!
So you're in for many hectic hours behind the cams and in post. Good luck - I know that the married couple are going to love their movie and be proud to show it to their kids and grandkids in the years to come.

Yeah... well... the built-in screenshot functionality is totally wonderful and very flexible. Go to DEBUG, select SCREENSHOT and within 10 secs (default) dial back to the actual screen you want to save. Plinggggg! The file format is .ppm, which opens in Ps.

The cam method is for setups, where Yours Truly continuously asks himself: Do I know what I'm doing...? I use the cam method when I take some time, an evening or a Sunday morning to just play around with ML, try out some unknown (to me) feature. With the cam setup I take the shots as fast as I can change the Canon or ML menus in question in .jpg.

So the choice of method varies with conditions.

Thanks so much. Right now I'm writing captions to a large number of photos of menu and submenu choices. Every function is tested on 700d/5dIII - as far as I'm able to. Many functions depend on settings elsewhere in ML and/or the Canon menus, and I need to document them all. Hopefully over the summer a first draft will be presented - and all of you will be able to correct, comment, expand and exemplify... I expect a "living" document, basically formed by the users and developers, downloadable in whatever format you may need.
Let's keep in touch here at the ML site - and a warm hello to your partner.

Raw Video / Re: ML or external video recorder ?
April 26, 2016, 03:04:58 PM
Raw video is not possible without ML. When you get used to ML, you'll ask yourself how you were ever able to live without it. ML adds so much functionality to both video and stills, that it's like having a totally new camera. The work flow is more difficult than plain H264, but the results are simply amazing.

QuoteFrom A1ex, April 1 (first post in this thread): Current implementation only works on 5D3, and I've tested it only on 1.1.3. The module is not yet compatible with current nightlies, so you need a full package (not just the module).

The latest ML/Crop3X may be found here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=17021.msg165282#msg165282

Yeah, well, I didn't want to go into a lenghty legal discussion. But my 700d and my 5dIII produce .mov's. And several other Canons produce .mov. So whatever the proprietary legalness, in my world .mov is a movie file format native to movie making with several standard cameras, not to be confused with raw movie file formats. If Apple has a legal issue with the Canon cameras producing .mov-files, I'm sure they'll know where to go. But since nothing like that has happened for several years, maybe one may assume, that Canon and Apple have long ago settled any possible disagreement as to the use of .mov file extension.
#59
Probably my mistake - but .mov is a native Canon movie format, whereas raw have other file extensions afaik.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 700D / T5i
April 20, 2016, 10:33:16 PM
As several posts indicate, there is never any guarantee, that any forthcoming Canon will ever be ML'led. The 5DS/SR are not obvious candidates for any ML version in a foreseeable future, and my community - journalists and press photographers are greatly divided over the new cams from Canon: Lots of excellent pictures with astounding detail - but not enough ISO to do the dirty jobs in the sports arenas or when there has been an accident on the highway in the middle of a winter night. So don't hold your breath...

Last: I think we're quite a bit away from the 700d which is a wonderful machine, especially if it is powered by ML.

Do anybody know where I can find the latest ML/crop3x? I am using the April 2 version (with great satisfaction) but I think, the crop module and a few other items have "developed" somewhat. I'm looking forward to try it out - and of course to see it come out in the nigthlies when you think it's ready, being one of the more important improvements - thanks again, A1ex.

@aajlin - Focus ramping is there - https://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/features. But I think I remember, that the function was changed some time ago; the bulb option would cause problems. . According to the list, no cam has bulb/focus ramping any more.

Walter Schulz mentions the issue here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=15921.msg154619#msg154619

@JamesSteele - For convenience and access to the latest features and the most bug-free ML editions always use the latest build. I've updated my ML almost every time a new nightly was available with no problems at all.

General Help Q&A / Re: Need to reload ML?
April 14, 2016, 09:53:34 PM
You'd probably want to use the latest nightly to have the latest goodies and features. The 550/T2i nightly was updated a couple of days ago. Top of the page > Downloads. Good luck.

Ahh so sweet. Beautiful song. Beautiful girl. Beautiful footage.

@a1ex & Co - I had it on my good ol' 700d and I loved it. And now... same wonderful functionality on my new babies. You're just awesome. Thank you once again for ML; what you're doing is very much appreciated. Yesterday we had a wonderful sunset. I was filming near a lake with some exciting bird life with a long lens, and all the time I said to myself: should have brought the ol' trusted 700d - 1.6 factor + crop mode - o, I wish I could do this with my 5d's.
And today I wake up - and it's there. Magic. Pure m a g i c  l a n t e r n.

I have tested 5d3 formatting CF-cards, and I can't make it format card as exFat, so it might be wise to check, that your card is still exFat.

What not many people know is, that vedic philosophy, ethics and standards, which date several millennium back, are the back bone for Christianity, Judaism and Islam. 3-4000 years ago Vedic standards defined agreements, honesty and obedience towards higher goals. In Europe we happen to be the Indoeuropean culture, migrated to here - and later to the Americas - from the Indian Northern frontiers. Most of the European languages, Latin and Italian, French and (strangely) German and English plus the Scandinavian languages derive from ancient Vedic language.

Your wonderful film is a tribute to an heritage, which seems to be all forgotten, but may hold a promise for the future. It is the common ground for attitudes, ethics, morality, mutual respect and respect for the living, that today seem to stride violently apart.

It is a beautiful narrative, a look upon life seen through the eyes of a young boy, which is appealing to all of us: Don't lose the perspective - we have a common background and a shared heritage. We have a common responsibility and a mutual obligation as human beings. Vedic philosophy instituted the concept of society.

For a very long time I haven't seen a camera come to better use, that in this totally encaptivating movie. Filming, post-production, color grading... It would all come to nothing if it were not for the message in this film. Why are we here? We're here for tomorrow. That when the sun rises we'll have another day to be with our peers, children, parents, colleges, friends... being pieces in the most wonderful puzzle: Our Society.

There is hope.

For tomorrow.

David, I'm a little nervous that I've used ML more or less as a chat room today, but really, it has been extremely refreshing, and not least from seeing your Sinbi Night Highlights - that just made my day. And I sure stand by what I wrote about checking the shutter for causes for pinkies. Admitted: I'm no expert.

But you're right. 4K is coming, but I can assure you, that in the European area 2-3K/14bit will be the big animal for the next couple of years. Markets have their own redundancy. As a professional you'll have to wait for the TV broadcasting companies to turn to 4K; in Europe  only a handful are prepared for 4K at the coming Olympic Games, and in my country Denmark only 1 or 2. Maybe in 2018-19??? TV sets in people's homes are still mostly 1600/900 or (hopefully) 1920/1080, no matter the size of the screen.

Some time ago, in January, we saw this little marvel of a film, wonderfully filmed and very delicately beefed up in post to 3.5K: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16439.0

baccinoluigi took a helluva effort and time to make this, but isn't it just like looking out through your window? 5D3 at its best!!!

David, I'd give an arm and a couple legs for the Blackmagic supercam, but I'm afraid that I'd lose a lot of spontaneity and readiness. Super-35 though ef'fed isn't fullframe, so the Canon lenses you are used to, yield a little less on the wide side. The BM marvel costs $5K, the 5d around 2.5.

The Vimeo footage you sent us starts dramatically, and then something happens. Maybe DeafEyeJedi you can help me out, but the last part of the footage sure looks like shutter rolling - like a rotating shutter cuts a picture pattern into something like minced meat. Certainly not uncommon with digicams. Are we on to something here? Shutter??? I think I remember we have a setting for something like that somewhere...? Could the shutter make pinkies?

If you give yourself one month to test ML/5d3 to the limits, I think you'll learn to love it even more than you do now - your wellmade film proves that you already do, having to fight snot, sweat and tears to get your footage - 14 bit color depth with full HD from an ordinary cam!!!

And then perhaps a pinky pattern will show up with conditions, that create pinks. The ML crew is working full-bore to find solutions. And as I said, DeafEyeJedi has a valid point - and he is one of the most professional ML users I have ever heard about. I am totally confident, that he'll trust ML for pro work, if not with his own life, then the life of his - er... dog...?

And --- BM comes without Magic Lantern.

BTW - I noticed that you too saw the wonderful photo from France (Magiclanterner)...

Hey, DavidP, was absent from computer for a short while. Excellent film you made, more than excellent use of existing light, your cam position is not always optimal, but nevertheless you suck an enormous amount of action out of it. Wow, one of the better films to be brought to this forum. You certainly set the bar high for what I hope to achieve. So I understand, that pinks are totally annoying.

And... DeafEyeJedi may be on to something.
Card speed is best determined by benchmark in-cam. Go to debug menu, remember to benchmark in 'play' mode, test your card. The "official" markings are read speeds, not write speeds - and by the way I don't know if pinks have anything to do with card speed, but nobody seem to count it out. Pinks happens so often, that there are several threads in this universe dealing with them.
But then again... Cam makes pinks, recovers and continues as if nothing happened. There are a lot of variables; which one sets off the pinks? or which combination? A1ex and many other of the most insightful guys have tried to recreate the precise conditions for pinks, not only with 5d3 but with several cams, and to the best of my knowledge haven't found a common denominator yet.
I'm rather green in this environment and I'm still experimenting with my (new) 5d, and the settings I mentioned above have worked so far. but I also shut off all irrelevant modules and features (and probably more than necessary), so I don't know if there is a culprit hidden somewhere.

Base line:
Go ahead. Use ML for pro jobs - you're doing a helluva good job with it already, color and effects are yummy. If there is a pink spark somewhere, let it be. Check footage every once in a while if at all possible - and have a good buddy with a cam2 running for really important work. The chance that cam2 has a pink at the exact same spot is nil. So splicing cam2 in is just like having... er? a cam2!!!!!

Which 5d3? Firmware 113 or 123? Shooting which brand of raw? MLV or MLVlite or the original Raw '1' Card quality? Overlays on/off?
Before shooting anything important you'd be expected to test, test and test again your procedures. Your cards, sound (external hopefully?) Like an aircraft pilot you don't go solo without a ballast of experience.
My 5d3 makes 1920/1080/14bit/24p without a glitch with a fast card, x1066. The hardware delivers 89+ MB on the output card port. So...?
Take a look at 'Share your videos' and see what other people accomplish with ML Raw.
To see what your precious 5d3 can do look at http://rbrune.github.io/mlraw/. And have a nice easter.

ML has come a long, long way since the legendary 2.03. stevefal and others proposed a new interface way back in 2013; you may read some of the story here:

Never exceed ISO 1600 with the 600. Manual: Lowest aperture possible, focus in left hand  - NOT auto. 1/25 - 1/50 sec shutter. Lowest contrast profile - rebuild contrast in post. Prepare - and take your time. Redo if necessary.
Seek to film in well-lit surroundings. I bought two $50 building site LED lamps (each ~ 1000W) for indoor lightning. A second-hand 100mm 2.8 at $100? I saw one on eBay recently. I use my nifty-fifty (50 1.8) a lot; it just takes a little more work to get in a good position to shoot. Wish I had a 1.4. Good luck.
