Testing the new Build for Jan.14/14
There is more improvement in performance write speed, plus stable crop marks though
hdmi devices. No crashes of any kind.
I Thing thou, When I formated my card in Camera I lost all magic lantern software plus raw files.
Had to reinstall all ML software on card including making card bootable. But that was in Crop mode,
and never happen in non crop mode, So be careful on that!
Here are my numbers: With HDMI Evf connected:
1872x938 23.976p continuous
Audio=on  48kHz
buffer=1
GD=off
Preview=Hacked no prev.
Crop Mode:
1856x1004 23.976p Continuous
buffer=0
No HDMI devices:
1856x1004 23.976p--3880, 3913, 2200, 1720 frames
Audio 48kHz
Preview=ML gray
Crop mode:
2048x930 23.976p 3987 frames
buffer 0
2048x872 23.976 continuous
preview= canon
Things are improving very well,
A.D. is possible to have the Raw record info out side the white Rectangle Crop Mark.
I record the Live View and the info is just inside on the low left, if that could be drop
to the bottom of the LV screen then I could record it cleanly without turning
All overlays off and keep the info while recording raw.  :)

Raw Video / Re: Real world use of RAW video on DSLRs?

Bottom line if your a cinematographer, you most like will love RAW and wont ever go back.
If your an event videographer that only does coverage, probably not going to like raw for that.
And if your caught up in the megapixel hype, get a 4k cell phone or what ever, not a 5d3 with full frame sensor and 1080p RAW video.
The 4k will not impress me unless we all have 40 foot screens in our house.
From my perspective, after editing h.264 for so long with endless frustration, ML gave me a new camera to work with. I much prefer taking my time with my footage and finessing it to my liking. but to each his own
Yes content is key but if i had a choice, i would record my content in raw.

Vegas is good , I was a Vegas user from 4.5 to 9.0
There's no reason not to use it if you have it, it's a lot better now then in Version 9.0
There a steep learning curve for Resolve, so I would keep thing simple for now
until you learn resolve , use light room with ACR, export 16bit tiff and
or make video file from that or import tiff as a image sequence in to Vegas.
  :)

Edit: I think I will try a demo of Vegas & see how Raw works in there.
also doesn't Sony have a New free Grading software I heard about 6 Months ago ?

Yes, but you still need to know how to drive a 4x4  ;)

Please excuse me if this info is somewhere, can only seem to find pieces here and there. Planning on a feature film, shooting ML RAW 1080p, would like to upscale 1080P master to 4K anamorphic when we make that big sale (yeah, sure we will...) Anyways, any post workflow suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Hello, I did a short tutorial on that subject but not for 4k anamorphic (here is the link)
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9211.msg87361#msg87361
it a lot of work, but I think if you make your master 4K files and use the original as proxy's
I found when I converted my 2k files to 4k in Photoshop, the 4k image took on a
organic look, very pleasing to the eye, that's my thought's on it.
And yes I would do it again . :)

Use tiff there is no need to step on your image (dng 14bit - jpeg 8bit)
you have Light Room That's a Adobe product, so if you have that way not get or use A.E. ?
If Vegas is the NLE of choice, I would do it 2 ways,
1) Tiff image sequence>NLE
2) Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter (free)
import tiff sequence and render out a AVI, or QT MOV.
On the PC I like Blackmagic RGB codec, its also  free
Link below "Blackmagic_Desktop_Video_Windows_9.8.zip"
http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/detail/register/download?sid=3958&pid=3966&fid=0&did=47484&os=win&alt=true&sdk=false&beta=false&archived=false

On Resolve I think you can do a Round trip with XML's from Vegas but I'm not sure.
But to export from there pick the highest resolution Codec, in this case "blackmagic rgb"
Just read up on the documentation with resolve it should explain it all.
I hope this helps  :)

Raw Video / Re: Real world use of RAW video on DSLRs?

I think there's a lot of people with "best practices" issue and not getting the result they expected .
It's seems "from the posts here in the form" that a lot of user's are finding it hard to come from
H264/MOV. file to Raw/DNG's .
Before you more of less just focus, frame it, expose then record, or set to Auto then hit record.
So now Magic Lantern Team has put a "Ferrari" in your hands (My favorite one is  1962 Ferrari 250 GTO  ;) )
like all Hi-performance Machine there's a learning curve you need to do !
But I think that maybe the problem, some people are lazy (this dose not apply here , please don't take offence).
and they just don't want to read of research the topic for raw, a lot just want someone
to tell them what to do or how to do it.
The Workflow is very simple and if you are a organized person you should not have issue .
I Subscribe to the very simple philosophy "K.I.S.S." (keep it simple stupid)  ;D
You really don't need a "super computer" to process Raw, there is so many way now to get your raw file to a video clip.
I know of (3) different way with no special software added,
1) After Effect >ARC> Video file > NLE
2)Apple Motion 5 >image sequence>Color Grade>ProRes4444>NLE
3)Apple Compressor 4>image sequence>Video File(with minimal image adjustment)
and as long as you have a good (GPU) you don't need a lot a CPU power.
:)

Edit: I use Raw for all my projects, and with MLV+Audio there is no turning back!

is there a tutorial or link with instruction how to work with MLV format in windows, I've tried using cmd prompt with what little instructions I have found but from there it turns into a mess.  Shouldn't be "this" difficult right?
I did a short tutorial for Windows with mlv+audio but on a 5d2 it should help.

Are you using Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Pro 7 ?
Are you using the latest DaVinci Resolve Lite 10.0.2 for Mac ?
As far as I know the round trip you want work with FCPX
there is a setting in resolve called  "Easy Roundtrip for FCPX"
Resolve>FCPX>Resolve
After you import your file in resolve and do the "Easy Roundtrip"
resolve will made a fcpxml plus a reference movie of the Cdng's to import to FCPX.
Save the changes with the same fcpxml to be import back to resolve.
That's the basics of it. Others on the form may have additional information on this this subject.
I hope this helps . :)

Edit: just reading the documentations for Resolve and Yes there is support for FCP 7 xmls.
but I don't know if the easy round trip works the same.

General Help Q&A / Re: Liveview screen layout, how?

I can't find the way to see the Audio Recording Levels, etc, in the screen of my 60D.
Everything looks in order but simply I can't find the way.  :-X
If you have "Frame Over-Ride On" that disables the VU meters in the overlay.
Turn that off and you will see the meters
At lest on my 5D2 So I assume its the same on the 60D.

Thank A.D.
I always have fun making tutorials about ML  :)

I pre-Grade in A.E. with the ACR plugin then export as a ProRes 4444
Edit and final grade in Final Cut Pro X 10.1 . ;)
Or I import CDNG's as a image sequence if under 5 min project in FCPX.
and of course you can do the Round trip with Resolve>FCPX>back to resolve for final grade.
I would not convert to prores 422, use Prores 4444, why though away all that information.
I think the ACR plugin in A.E. is about the best, but other may have different opinions on this.

I tested the Dec 30 build with audio filming b camera for a live show for a friend- it seems to have come out OK, but the build is too buggy to use for any serious work- mostly that the global draw doesn't turn off and some recordings just stop instantly and require a camera reboot. Oct 24 is still the one to use, for professional paid work at least. Too many corrupted outputs on the new one, slower speeds, and random file stops for now for me to move to MLV.

Is it possible to use regular old raw with audio at some point?
Try the mlv_rec.mo from the nightly build it's a lot more stable. I use the mlv_snd.mo from A.D. build Dec.30/13 & the rest comes from Jan 1st nightly build.
I didn't find any issue with MLV, I always have hdmi evf connected , yes its a little slower but that will get better.
I don't need any overlays so maybe that why it works for me. My Evf has all the overlays etc.. that I need.
Just wondering what's is your CF card  what Frames size did you record in  & the buffer fill method.
On MLV format?

@dariSSight
your welcome, yes that right  I just load modules for raw video.
I don't Do Photo's with my 5D2 just Video.
I don't think it matters one way or the other, just load them as you need them.
I like to keep thing very simple so I only load the Video modules.

Thanks David!

I'll give the Sound a try now.

If I record 2 channels with my mic, will that be a problem with the MLV_snd ?
You should Ok , but I didn't check on a  2 channel Mic.

Here a short test with MLV+Audio on the nighty build form Jan.1st
with me talking and counting to Ten plus a short tutorial on how to setup
MLV with audio, on the 5D2  :)

Just to confirm there is Headphone Monitoring on the 5D2
with MLV Raw+Audio, works very well.

So MLV Audio & Video work great with the Dec 30 build,RAW works great without audio in Oct 24 build?
Yes MLV raw with Audio is working very well, the nighty build from Jan. 1st seems to be a little bit faster
with hdmi. I'm just finishing off a short test of about 3-4 Min, at 1856x928(continuous with hdmi)  should be ready tomorrow to post.
And yes the Oct 24th build is the one to use for Non MLV raw (old format)
Quote from: dariSSight on January 04, 2014, 12:33:27 AM
RAW Audio & Video work great up to 20-30 seconds?
Yes, But you can get Continuous recording without hdmi active, but in 2:1 A.R. like, 1872x936, 1856x928 and smaller
just not HD A.R. 1.85:1, 16:9 in larger frame size ,etc. 1872x1012 there limited to 20-30 second.

#2019
What build are you using?
What are the setting for raw record ?
We can't help if you don't give some info.
Did you read on how to install & setup
ML on  5D2.

This is my HDMI test results on MLV with Audio enabled:
HDMI devices (Zacuto EVF & Atomos Ninja HDMI recorder)
With HDMI>Largest Frame size Continuous record,
1872x850 23.976p 2.20:1  with Audio 22,710/15:47 min 60GB 67.9MB/s buffer method 1
Crop Mode > 1856x938 23.976p with Audio 20,000 frames 68 MB/s buffer method 0

Tried the nightly build from Jan-1 MLV, and could get larger frame size continuous with HDMI
1856x930 23.976p 2:1 19,000 frames 55GB buffer method 1
Crash 2 times with hdmi plugin when I tried to record 1856x1004 and or 1872x1012, the buffer just filled up with blue color then  lockup
Battery pull & reboot ok after that.
Any Sizes in the 1.85:1 or 16.9:1 are not possible in Large sizes more then 20 or 30 second clips
It seems on the 5D2 you are limited to about 70-73 MB/s without hdmi active
and with it active then that drops to about 65-68 MB/s & in crop mode to about 74MB/s
Its definitely usable without hdmi at this point, run & gun style with audio  ;)

Hi  :)
Just wanted to report my tests with MLV with Audio on the 5D2
I first have to Say Great Job Everyone! I all Cases audio was sync .
Now to the Test Numbers;
I did two different type of tests one with HDMI devices (Zacuto EVF & Atomos Ninja HDMI recorder)
And Without HDMI. Tested on Lexar 1000x 64GB.
Without > Largest Frame size Continuous record
1872x936 23.976p with Audio 19,931 frames/13:51 Min. 60GB 73.3MB/s 67° C.  :o  buffer method 2
Crop Mode > 2048x872 23.976p with Audio 19,930 Frames/13:50 Min 60GB about 74-75MB/s buffer method 1
With HDMI>Largest Frame size Continuous record,
1872x850 23.976p 2.20:1  with Audio 22,710/15:47 min 60GB 67.9MB/s buffer method 1
Crop Mode > 1856x938 23.976p with Audio 20,000 frames 68 MB/s buffer method 0
This on A.D. build for the 5D2 dec.30
Tried the nightly build from Jan-1 MLV, and could get larger frame size continuous with HDMI
1856x930 23.976p 2:1 19,000 frames 55GB buffer method 1
In all tests GD off and only the 5D2_212.sym, file_man.mo,  mlv_rec.mo, mlv_snd.mo
Crash 2 times with hdmi plugin when I tried to record 1856x1004 and or 1872x1012, the buffer just filled up with blue color then  lockup
Battery pull & reboot ok after that.
It seems on the 5D2 you are limited to about 70-73 MB/s without hdmi active
and with it active then that drops to about 65-68 MB/s & in crop mode to about 74MB/s normally that's about 76-79MB/s
and 75MB/s in non crop mode.
Its definitely usable without hdmi at this point, run & gun style  ;)

I though I should test out the Raw module that with the MLV raw & sound module.
There is still issue with Global Draw/Low performance .
You can kill GD but still have the Black Bars on the top & bottom.
also now there is overlays in Crop mode. :(
My recommendation is to keep to the Oct.24th build for original raw format.
If you what Audio with the raw use the new build for the 5D2 MLV format.
I'm confused why, they fixed the global draw issue & low performance  in the MLV format but not the
original raw format ?

A.D. has just update his thread with a new MLV build with Sound
Link below: Its for the 5D2
https://bitbucket.org/a_d_/laboratory/downloads/b71322bb883c.zip
I have been testing out, there is some very good improvement's.
To extract the raw files with Audio use the MLV view sharp Brower

I Think it really come down to best practices for All Cards no matter what brand.
Like formatting , Ejecting the card right from reader, etc....
there's No Prefect CF card just degrees of better manufacturing
and it seems Lexar's are near the Top.  :)
