this is sooooo great. I was testing the dng sequence from neumannfilms. I know that you need to crop down to get rid of black areas and funny stuff on bottom of frame but then it made the stair stepping/little artifacts a little more noticeable (better than all-1 tho). i kept the same 16x9 crop but zoomed out a bit (in adobe camera raw) and found the detail to be much more pleasing (but there was a black bar on left). Even if we had to give it more of 2:35:1 crop (to save buffer) using the full with with of that image would be worth it. Is this possible? I know its in early stages and again i know nothing about firmware code so sorry if this is a dumb question. Again amazing work as always ML and all who helped!

I made this video with sRAW stills and processed them with adobe camera raw. After making this i never want to shoot with h.264 again. If ML can tame this dng sequence we are in for a a real treat to say the least!

Canons current method of sharpening in camera looks good on its still images. Probably because its radius is fine tune for higher megapixel/rez. It would be nice if we could fine tune the sharpness for video so theres no halos. then we could aviod sharpening the h.264 artifacts when we sharpen in post. I wish canon would add picture styles that were tuned for video too. i wonder if we will see canon log option on the 5d3 when they add the uncompressed hdmi rubbish. uggg the 5d3 is such love hate for me!

At this point canon is starting to make me sad. Have you seen the s35 1080p all-i from the 1dc. its tack sharp!

http://www.eoshd.com/content/9548/bbc-freelance-cameraman-tests-super-35mm-1080p-on-the-canon-1d-c

I feel like if the 1dc is shooting s34 4k with dual digi 5s why cant we get sharper s35 1080p from the single digi 5 cams like the 5d3.  I would so take the s35 crop if it ment sharper 1080. Sorry i know ML cant change the deep deep proporties of canon dslrs but i feel the need to voice this one anyway. I LOVE YOU ML! but i strongly dislike canon (coming from a 5d3 owner)

Ha Ha Glad to be of assistance drifftwood (tho i feel i hardly did anything compare to what all you guys are doing). I know nothing about how all this works but i do know a little bit about video and cinema. if theres anything else i can do to push forward the quality of video from the 5d3 or the all-i codec in general let me know!

No bumping your own posts  ::)
Not sure if that was for me but i usally make a billion mistakes in my posts or word things poorly so wanted to correct them. grammer is not my strong point. deffinetly was not trying to bump my post.

whats the word on the mjpeg? is it possible to get just sequences of hd jpegs at 24p on 5d3 seperated by folders? Then we could just stitch it together in post. It might mean no playback in cam but id sure take it if it ment nice fine jpeg noise!

is the bit rate feature something that will work with the alpha style boot that runs off the card? I love booting ML off the card. I know its not 100% safe but its deffintly less scary for noobs like me a ha ha

just sent you a dropbox with 1080 30p all-i and ipb 1080 24p all-i and ipb 720 60p all-i and ipb Mr Driftwood. should be 6 clips when there done syncing

You can always upload to a file share site or use dropbox to share sample files.

Did you get em? sent them here.
#416
ok driftwood just sent you a bunch of clips but i have no idea if they went through. they are probably to big for email.
#417
ill send ya some stuff. just shot a bunch.
#418
Driftwood and ML! shhhoooooooo weeeee this is exciting!

Is it possible to have bit rate options on the 5d3 alpha versions that run off the card? i like the idea of running my off the card. seems allot safer.
#419
Wow is this the Drifwood that made the gh2 hacks hard round the world? (Not sarcastic I'm genuinely excited)
I'd be more then happy to send u a clip when I get a chance. I'm desperate for better sharper video from the mark III at this point!

id take it if it ment real 1080p and fine
film grain like noise of a jpeg

This is a 70 second video comparing the results of using the 5D Mark III's internal codec (ALL-I) with the video from an external recorder via ML's clean HDMI out. The external recorder is the HyperDeck Shuttle and ML is a1ex's Alpha 2 version for the 5D Mark III

As is discussed in the notes on the Vimeo, the current challenges in getting good results this configuration are: 1) the video via HDMI out is 1620x1080, requiring a zoom to get the same 16x9 image as what the 5D records; 2) The HDMI output is at 1080i, requiring deinterlacing; and 3) the output of the HDMI is 8-bit and might be 4:2:2, but could be 4:2:0.

Excellent work. Im not sure if i would want to record my video this way yet. but i think you may have revealed why the mark 3 has such soft internal recording. 1620x910 is probably what the mark iii is actually resolving (if even). then the 8bit and 4:2:0 h.264 probably further cripple it. At this point the olpf thing is deffinetly out. Again shooting an s2 jpeg in video mode yields a 1920x1080 jpeg that looks way sharper then its video. (realy good actualy telling me the rez is there, just not at 24fps) The soft video of the mark iii is due to how its sampled in camera IMO. Weather canon deliberatly did this or the camera cant physically capture true 16X9 1080 from its 20+mpix 35mm sensor is still unclear i guess. I do remember canon saying they were "trying to preserve details." and that they expect mark iii users to step up there "sharpening skills" Im not trying to bash but that to me sounds like a line there supposed to say so we feel at fault. I wish canon would just be straight with us is all.

Just talking about pure 1080P HD Video quality (not build quality or camera ergonomics or features) don't you think a hacked Panasonic GH2 can produce 'better' HD video that an EOS currently can ?

I know the 'soft' video look a Canon EOS camera produces can be very nice for some uses, but at the end of the day although the EOS file output is 1080p, you could argue it isn't actually a 1080 HD video at all, due to the internal camera resolutions and upscaling etc.

I love my 600D but really wish there was a way of getting better sharper, higher resolution video out of it...

This topic would be good to read up on:  http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=3492.0
and this one too: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=3489.0
At this point i totally agree. I just want want amazing detail from the canon dslr video. I dont think its gunna happen though for under $7k from canon.
