Raw Video / Re: Problem with slow-motion conforming

Thanks for the suggestion guys, much appreciated.

Just found that the Premiere Pro footage interpreting does the job efficiently with great results. I've chosen to finally switch over to Premiere Pro now.

Raw Video / Re: Problem with slow-motion conforming

Hi there dfort,

Thanks for your response. I shot in RAW mode (not MLV rec). So I had to convert the RAW to DNG and then to MOV ProRes (via DaVinci). I ran it in Cinema Tools after exporting it to ProRes since I can't run DNGs in Cinema Tools.

I haven't tried exiftool, perhaps I can try that if it conforms the same way as Cinema Tools?

FCP 7 definitely doesn't do it well, it wielded pretty poor results. I know Premiere Pro has an option to re-interpret the footage, though I haven't got access to it unfortunately.

Raw Video / Problem with slow-motion conforming
March 25, 2016, 07:38:22 PM
Hi guys,

I've always shot 50fps with my 5D Mark III + Magic Lantern and the conformed it via Cinema Tools to 25fps (or 23.98) for slow motion.

For some weird reason it isn't working this time round. Cinema Tools keeps giving me a 'skipped' response. I've tried exporting the clips with both ProRes 4444 and ProRes 442 via DaVinci.

The strange thing is, sometimes when I film in 50fps, it directly comes out as 25fps in slow motion without even needing to conform it. I'm not sure if this is because of a bug with ML or if changing the shutter from 100 to 125 wields different results.

Any other ideas on how I can conform it to 25fps for slow motion?

Cheers!

Raw Video / Re: 5D mark iii + 50fps = mixed results

So I've just tried it out with MLP and the odd 24fps and 25fps results still came out, despite filming in 50fps (it had nothing to do with MagicRaw).

Has this happened to anyone else?

@DeafEyeJedi - Hey buddy. I couldn't figure it out. I tried to convert my RAW files and I just got 'cube' folders. Could you tell me the process please?

@dfort - I've always used this method and never encountered this problem with DaVinci, though I'll look into that, thanks man.

Hi Walter. Just read the thread you posted. So RAWMagic have capitalised on your codes and offered no recognition to where they took it from, what a shame.

So what other software you would you recommend I use to transcode the RAW into DNGs (or any other files?). I'm not tech-savy when it comes to codes at all, couldn't work out how to use 'Cr2hdr-r'.

I'm assuming the problems I mentioned in the post are related to RAWMagic then.

Raw Video / 5D mark iii + 50fps = mixed results
December 12, 2015, 03:23:37 PM
Not sure if it's my settings, though recently I filmed with the ML hack at 50fps (to convert later for slow motion, which I've done many times before).

The first time, although the DNG resolution came out at 1920 x 648 as it always does for 50fps - RAWMagic Lite kept registering it as 25fps, no matter how many times I tried.

I shot at 50fps once again yesterday and this time it wielded different results. When I dragged the raw into RAWMagic Lite, it registered 50fps - all good. However, after converting to DNGs, they appeared as 24fps in DaVinci Resolve. When I transcoded them to QuickTimes, they came out in slow motion (yes that is what I set out to do, albeit I didn't want them in 24fps).

Anyone know why this has happened?

Thank you very much for the kind words guys. haha ML is now known as Magic Lady to me  :D

My workflow consisted of converting the RAW files with RAWMagic Lite > converted the DNGs to QuickTimes in DaVinci Lite (using Hunter's LUT). Converted them as ProRes 4444. Graded a little in Final Cut.

@DeafEyeJedi Thank you very much! Shot it in RAW and that's the only setting I added. Used the Tamron 24 - 70mm f/2.8 lens for it.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated it.

So I've been researching tutorials and more information, though I wanted to clarify some things.

Is crop mode simply a way of increasing the focal length of your lens without losing quality?

When you shoot in crop mode, does it convert your lens into a longer lens - OR does it allow you to shoot at the same focal length of your lens but because it records such high resolution, it gives you the option to punch-in into shots in post?

I shot some footage in 1920x1080 though I would love for it to be more detailed: https://vimeo.com/144889664

I'm shooting RAW with my Canon 5D mark iii, at 1920x1080 resolution with 16:9. I want to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio and shoot to the highest resolution. When I try to select the highest resolution it tells me that I can't in the current video mode.

Is this the highest resolution I can shoot in or am I doing something wrong?

Cheers.

So what would the scaling factor on Final Cut Pro be? Is there a specific number I can put in?

Thanks for the download link, I'll have to use that for another project as I've already transcoded these and in the edit, the deadline's real soon for the client.

Also just to add - I tried it out on some old raw files and all I got were cube files in various folders. Watched an installation video though they ended up with DNG files with the same method.

I can't find where to download it, do you have a link? I'm on OS X.

Thanks for the response Danne. I'll give that a g and let you know. Is this for MLV files only? My workflow is to shoot RAW (not with MLV sound rec) then RawMagicLite to convert to DNGs and then DaVinci Lite to Quicktimes.

As we know, when you shoot 50fps for slow motion, the footage comes out 'squashed' and you have to stretch it out to match your resolution - in my case it's 1920x1080 / 16:9.

I've always stretched it out manually to a size that felt right to my intuition, though it's too arbitrary and inevitably comes out inaccurate in it's sizing.

Are there any more specifics for how I should stretch it out to attain an accurate image? I'm using Final Cut Pro.

Cheers.

Will do, Walter. Thanks again.

Walter, you really are a hero member! It worked!!

I'm guessing it was the problem with my Camera settings that caused it. Much appreciated man.

Hey Walter.

For setting to factory defaults, so I'll uninstall Magic Lantern? What do you mean by resetting C.Fn settings? Do you mean I should format the compact flash card?

And then install ML back again, shut down camera for 5 seconds after the blinking stops, remove battery.

Insert battery and give you an update. Is that correct?

Hey Walter,

I tried your suggestion. It now takes photos one after the after no problem - however I still can't change ISO/shutter/aperture or any other setting after taking the first photo. I can change the settings before taking the photo, however not after - unless I restart the camera.

The LCD screen looks the same as the photo. The exposure info and the 3 rectangles on the right side start flashing after I take the first photo.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Since installing the latest Nightly Magic Lantern build, the stills photography for my 5D mark iii has been having problems.

I have the dial on M, (have tried JPEG and RAW image processing, it's the same results for both) and every time I take a photo - the LCD screen flashes and doesn't allow me to take another photo or adjust settings (shutter, iso etc). Here's a screenshot of the LCD screen below.

Does anyone know why?

Anyone have any ideas on how I can uninstall Magic Lantern from the 5D mark iii? I've gone to update firmware with the correct SD card inside, however it doesn't recognise it.

Also - the SD card had been formatted (inside camera) and taken out of the camera accidentally. Magic Lantern still runs on it, is it still fine to use? Is there any need for me to re-install it? My worry is if I face any problems later on.

A trip to Johannesburg, South Africa for the MOFILM Africa 2014 event, which we were invited to after winning 1st place for their competition. The trip involved  experiences in the richest areas...to the poorest...to the wildlife.
