Best way to record car sound with Canon EOS 600d?

Whats the best (but not too expensive) way to record car/engine/exhaust sounds?

thought about the zoom h4n or Tascam DR-40.. or maybe just an external mic for the Canon 600d?

Depending how Much DB the car is outputting and the sound of the environment.  If its pretty loud sound of just the car standing still h4n alone be enough and just put the mic up and close.

No it will be also recording while driving

So what would I need ? H4n + external mic ? Or only H4n ?
