Exposure Ramping for Sunset/Sunrise

I'm about to begin using EV ramping when shooting timelapses with the intervalometer. I guess my specific questions are:

1. How reliable is that?
2. What can I expect from the AUTO mode in addition?
3. What manual ramping values have people experimented with that have given them successes (and failures) - and what part of the world are you in (sunset times depend alot on meridian and time of year of course).

I would have tried ettr or in av mode than deflicker through dmilligan script
