How about blessed HDR RAW modes that write tags to the RAW file, instructing RAW2DNG which bits to patch together from alternate frames?

Clean 16-bit anyone?

If the 10-12 bit in-camera truncation exercise pans out, maybe alternate frames could even be written as 4 bits of clean shadow in order to minimize bit rate.

You can already record raw+hdr, only post workflow is left to you as an exercise ;)

Exactly. So the idea is to eliminate the HDR post-workflow by hinting the recorded files with HDR shooting parameters, and enhancing RAW2DNG to generate, say, 16-bit DNGs from the get-go. 4 more bits for 16X dynamic range.
