When writing images to the CF/SD card, append a checksum (SHA/MD5) to a given file that covers the contents of the file being written (either JPEG or CR2.)

This allows for verification that there has been no bit-rot (or other corruption) when files have been written to the card in the camera or copied from the card/camera to the computer. (Some USB CF/SD adapters are not so good in this space.)

Perfect would be embedding the hash in the file but extracting it would be difficult and CR2 does not support this(?). Maybe embed the hash in a DNG file (if DNG supports such a thing.)

If you have such problems, buy a new card reader.
