AF Confirm lens adapters

Forgive me, I'm an old guy and don't understand a lot of this in-depth tech for these things. I have a T3i with ML. Should AF chip adapters work with Canon/ML? With a vintage lens installed (a Vivitar 28mm full manual lens), the camera in Manual mode, LiveView, ML on,  when I try to take a pic  I get "Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean lens contacts." and it write an error log file.

As far as I know this is not a 'programmable' chip.

Am I doing something wrong? Bad chip/adapter? Incompatibility?

Adapter is broken or doesn't make contact with all pins.

Thanks. I have 2 other adapters, but this one is the only one that i have a lens for right now. I unmounted it, and tried the other 2 adapters with no lens, and both 'took' a pic. Also I taped over the bad one and it 'took' also, so it appears you are correct. Thank you very much.
