Canon T2i 550D non-functional after improper ML install (Error 80)

I'm posting this thread for a friend of mine, I hope we can help him out.
He just had his camera repaired for the exact same issue and is absolutely devastated.

This is the issue as best as I know it:
1. T2i 550D running 1.0.9 had a properly prepared SD card with ML installed on the M Dial setting
2. ML was copied to a new card WITHOUT doing a low-level format option beforehand
3. Camera was used for a brief time before it started graphically glitching and eventually ceasing to function

Here's the current set of problems:
Graphic glitches, live screen doesn't work, shutter freezes along with camera, images and videos don't save, nothing is ever written to the card, battery needs to be removed after every malfunction to proceed.

I have tried the following to get this camera operational:

• Draining the battery and camera
  Trying new/different SD cards
  Clearing settings/factory resetting
  Downgrading firmware, upgrading firmware, re-installing Magic Lantern
  Trying the newest ML nightly build (magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Mar28)
  Stability test (turns off the camera/freezes after shutter)

If anyone can give me more ideas I would be very thankful!

I've never experienced any problems at all like that on my 550D so I somewhat think it might just be a dodgy 550D in the first place.
Can you take it back and get a new one?
