Is it possible to shoot in video mode one frame at a time?  Similar to time lapse, except I want to use the trigger release/button press to capture each frame.  This would be used for making an animation straight out of the camera already in the form of a MOV file.

The closest you can get is to reduce the frame rate using FPS override since you want a single MOV file. Not sure if that would be enough for your needs though

It's not yet possible and I doubt it ever will be. Making a video out of JPG files isn't that hard anyway. Just make sure they're sequentially numbered (irfan view batch rename does this in seconds for a few thousand pics), pull the first picture into virtual dub (the rest are inserted automatically), do any editing you may need and export the video with your preferred compression.
