hi all, i'm using ML on my 550D for still captures photo. i've facing the limitation of shutter speed and aperture when using off-camera flash / HSS device (pixel king brand); shutter speed limited to 1/200 max. and aperture limited at f/3.5 and can't go bigger as my lens can go(e.g. f/1.8 or f/2.8). why this happen?

many thanks for those who answering.

I can't understand why it stops at f/3.5 but 1/200 is your max sync speed, you can't go past that.

You can if the camera + flash has high speed sync and E-TTL 2

That doesn't overcome the fact that 1/200 is the "last" speed at which the two slits of the shutter leave the sensor entirely exposed. High speed sync is a workaround, not a solution, in fact it has quite a few drawbacks. Still, he has probably not understood how the trigger works and i would say this has nothing to do with ML at all.

The aperture is limited by your lens. If you want to get f/1.8, get an f/1.8 lens such as the nifty fifty ( 50mm f/1.8 ).

The 1/200 shutter speed is the max. sync speed for normal flash. If you activate HSS (high speed sync), you'll be able to use higher shutter speeds. You do however need to use E-TTL. What flash do you have?

i'm using 50mm f/1.8 and nissin Di622 mark2.

ok, now i'm understand about the shutter speed. it's nothing to do with ML.  my lack knowledge of HSS.

how about the aperture? when it stop at f/3.5, currently what i'm doing is take-off the memory card, insert back then only can adjust the aperture to f/1.8. how this can happen?

I have a feeling that Canon's firmware *may* be limiting the maximum aperture to avoid over-exposing the image. When using flashes, aperture and ISO are the only two ways of controlling the amount of light going through the sensor. Shutter speed, if below the maximum sync speed, has no effect whatsoever.

Does it happen in M mode too? Or just in P/Tv/Av?

My tests on a 1100D with an E-TTL flash show that P and "green" modes prefer f/2.8. In P you can use exposure compensation  to get f/1.8. Av and M will go down to f/1.8 without issues
