Image quality wise, 5D3 ML 3.5k and 5.7k AR 2.4 24p 14 bit lossless 14 bit color depth modes are no less than R1MX 4.5k ws RedCode 42 (42 MB/s) compression ratio 7.5 24p.
For rendering time in Davinci Resolve 18, R3D is about 3 times faster than ML raw 4k, more so than ML raw 5.7k.
Now lens is the bottle neck, instead of camera. Don't blame your camera, blame your techniques.
I suspect that once 7D2 and 5D4 have ML raw ported, they may be at least equivalent to BMPCC 6K/pro, Red Dragon 6k, or even Alexa 35 (maybe dr not so).

ML Rocks!

I was thinking about buying a new camera and I am baffled that actually magic lantern still keeps up with other modern cameras. I would basically wait until the Canon EOS R5C Mark II.  With the cameras currently selling, I really am much more happy with the Canon EOS 5D3.

What do you think... will you be interested in a Canon EOS R5C Mark II?

I have been searching for a new beautiful 135mm lens. I have to admit the new lenses for Sony E-mount look somehow better?

Other expensive examples:
Viltrox 16mm F1.8 FE
Canon RF 24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z
Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM
Sony SEL FE 300mm f2,8 GM OSS
Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM

I am really surprised, Canon still hasn't opened their lens mount. When do you think that you can eventually buy other lenses for Canon RF?

i second you. i may go for an r5c 2. r5 although has no overheating warning, but the heat sink is too small for 8k raw. r5c is much better, 8k 60p raw, but no ibis, battery life is short. r5c 2 may be what we want, as we are spoiled by 5d3 ml. even so, i doubt that you will find much improvement on absolute iq, maybe more on af, ibis, easy to use, etc.
i was astonished that how well 5d3 ml or crop mood 650d/700d footage keeps up well with new mirrorless and cinema cameras, as long as you don't pixel peep at 200% or more etc.

the current generation of rf lenses are not canon's best. wait for another decade, rf lenses will mature. by then, canon may open rf mount to sigma, tokina, etc.
i don't care about af, i use mf lenses most of time, so no big deal to me.

zeiss zf/ze 135 is apo, no af, iq is very good.

In the current era, the major issue of magic lantern in general is that now there are too many excellent choices, very different from 10 years ago, when 5d3 ml raw was the only low budget raw video camera in the town. Nowadays the magic lantern project is more for fun as cam dev to know the camera inside, or to provide extreme low budget raw cameras to beginners. the impact on the whole cinematography industry is far less important than 10 years ago. I still like ml, just more for nostalgic purpose.

This makes me think that you never tried to recover some detail from shadows on 5D3 crappy sensor ;D

5d3 650d/700d/m/100d sensors' achellis heel is heavy rolling shutter. they were designed for still photography, not for movies. but 14 bit color is rare even in cinema cameras. it is all about pros and cons.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 5D3+ML, but I bet 12-bit Raw with R5 / R5C outplays 14-bit ML Raw with 5D3 by far.

Guess we are talking about cost / benefits here ;D

8k is not significantly sharper than 4k.

5d3 ml raw is 14 bit true lossless, r5c canon raw light is 12 bit with a compression ratio of 3 or 5.
So it is not a blow out of water thing.
R5c has less rolling shutter than r5, and of course than 5d3.
At 10 times cost, the gain is minimal. But video af is much better, day and night. For me, I have many more mf lenses than af ones, so does not matter to me. For steadycam and gimbal, r5c blows 5d3 ml out of water.

Your right the shadows are noisy. I try to normally choose the EOS HD C-log picture style and of course I pull down the shadows in Adobe Camera RAW. I hope the best for the Canon EOS 5R C II 📺📷🎥

I really like the iq much better on the 5d m2 or m3
it's unique
