Hi Guys and Girls,

I have got a sound problem with my Canon 550D.  I've done a short film and I've recorded the sound with a boom mic.  I can here the sound when I watch it back on the camera, but not when I've got it on my laptop.

I've updated the magic lantern to 2.3.
I think it's the boom mic because I did some recording at the end without the mic connected and I can hear it on my laptop.

Thanks for your help.

So does it have an audio track when you import it into the NLE?

On the camera, all of the footage has audio but when I put it onto my laptop, only the footage where I haven't used the mic has.

Can it be down to the latest magic lantern update?

Thats a bit impossible, if there is audio in camera and it plays back then there is an audio track in the file. For whatever reason its not being read on your laptop. Maybe level is too quiet for you to hear it since externals tend to be that way.

You probably have to edit the audio track and amplify/process the sound. Was the other mic the internal mic?

When I play it back on the camera, the audio is loud.  I think it's impossible as well but it's doing it.
I've got every kind of media player and codec.  When I play it on them, there is no sound but the sound bars are moving.  I've tried putting it on Adobe Premiere Pro and on there it's showing audio but I can here it.  I've tried putting it onto another laptop and it has the same problem.

The other one is built in.

So audio is there, internal mic records much louder. In camera it also amplifies audio on playback.

Separate out the audio on the quiet clips and post process it. No other way and honestly this is SOP for any media project.

If you used AGC for audio I guess you wouldn't have this problem but then you'd have crap sound.

Most of the footage I used the external mic.  On the camera the audio is loud.  On the last part of the footage when I disconnected the the external mic, the laptop plays the audio.

What recording device would you recommend I use in the future?

Well an external recorder (zoom h1, etc) might be higher quality but your sound is there. You just have to edit it. Its just wav so its not a codec issue, just a level issue. Were you monitoring when you recorded? Most of this stuff is definitely not set it and forget it.

Split the video and audio. Edit the audio, combine again in your favourite NLE and encode to delivery format. Some NLEs like vegas let you do some decent processing without separating it out.

Yes the camera guy did keep his eye on it, that's why I can hear it on the camera.

I'll have to see what I can do with Sony Vegas.

Thanks for the info and your help.
