Canon 100D raw potential.
« on: September 06, 2017, 10:38:16 AM »
I apologise for these novice questions. But hey im a noob :D

I'm sure that with a camera like 5d mk3 or other cam with a higher resolution like 7d, 50d etc.. is worth it.. But with a 100d that has a lower resolution is it worth it to shoot videos in raw?
The 100D currently is able to shoot 10 bit raw at 1568x882 in (16:9) in continuos mode. Versus 1920x1080 with H264 compression. certainly raw format has more flexibility and offers a lot of possibilities in post-production like Shadow and High lights recovery, custom white balance etc..
but if the goal is to get a decent video in full hd, Is that resolution sufficient?
do not misunderstand me, I appreciate this opportunity to shoot raw videos. I just want to understand more about raw potential and how best to use it.

Sorry for my very bad english.

Hi,

we already got "h264 vs raw" topics. Just search for it. 100D is same generation as 650D/700D/EOSM in terms of sensor / write speed and quality. Also there are lots of comparison videos on YT.

100D doesn't have ALL-I option for recording FHD H264. Here the bitrate modifications (after installing ML) come in handy and push your recordings a lil' bit. If that suits your needs then take and be happy with it combined with picture styles. With 10/12bit I would personally go RAW always just for the colors in post production. The amount of quality difference regarding details etc may not be significant after upscaling - still I would go RAW. But that's me. You could even extend the resolution if you don't need continuous. In the end you will have to find the answer yourself. It's like photos JPG vs RAW vs additional workflow/time.

Many thanks for the clarification. in photography I always shoot in raw, I think raw is a great thing. when I heard about the possibility of being able to do it even in the videos I was very pleased.
in fact my doubt was about the final a output. In this case achieve good quality in 1080p..  So im very happy to hear that  the quality after upscaling remains good. a good reason to continue shooting in RAW even in videos
Thanks again :)
