When shooting 1:1 RAW I understand the VAF filter is a huge bonus. If shooting in crop mode, should the filter be removed?

Kharak

Crop mode is 1:1 ratio of the sensor. The normal raw or h264 on the 7D does line skipping which is the cause of the aliasing  and moire that your filter is combatting. So when you record in crop mode and you have a vaf filter in, the filter is blocking about 2/3 of the readout.

So yes remove it for crop mode recording.

Edit: i never used a vaf filter, but i suppose you dont take pictures with the filter in, for the same reason.
once you go raw you never go back
