Hi,
it's been a while that I seek to monitor my 5d2 on Ipad, and i found a month ago this little freeware app for IOS (and Android) that provides especially this function. Unfortunately, there were some flicker on the 5d lcd screen that made the thing useless, the monitoring was ok on the ipad but we could not change any function on the dslr as the lcd goes on and off alternately...
But since the last 22 march update, no more issue, lcd is working as expected in liveview !!! so now i can monitor on my ipad air and have the 5d2 lcd sceen on too, to control my parameters as usually. Really, really nice !!

You need a jailbroken Ipad !
Does not work with RAW video, but it's beta...

i've made a little iphone video to show you that :

And a screenshot off the ipad :

A compatible Canon EOS model camera.
Jailbroken iPad. We have tested the iPad 3 and iPad Mini Retina on iOS 7.
Camera Connection Kit. Be sure to get the one that fits your iPad:
30-pin or Lightning
Male full-size USB to male miniUSB cable. This is a very common cable, and the same one you use to connect your camera to your computer. Usually one of these comes with the camera.

Awesome. What do you mean by jailbroken Ipad?
Canon 5D Mark III, Gopro Hero Blacks with 3D Casing, A Few Lenses, Adobe CC 2014, MacBook Pro, Windows 8 PC, Lots of Video Rig!

Started Nuke. Loved it but then the 15 day trial ran out. Back to After Effects and loving it :-)

You need to hack your ipad (jailbreak), takes 5mn...

Canon eos m

Please send me a link. Will it work with the old IPAD2?

I hope...
My fîrst impression is that is really accurate for focusing, sharp and clear image. When recording starts the framerate goes down to 12 / 15 fps, and 20 / 25 fps when not recording. When you open the review mode or ml interface, the image freezes on the ipad and restarts automaticaly when you close the menu.
For now there is no overlay at all, and no controls, but they are planning to adding them.

Need to find a good tripod mount for my ipad air :))

The iPad version of DSLR Controller is more of a proof of concept than anything and I suspect it might remain like that for some time. The problem is that stock iOS doesn't allow apps any access to devices via USB Host. The only way around that limitation is to jailbreak the iOS device. That means the app can't live in Apple's App Store and will therefore be a niche product that may never be financially viable (the author released this build to see how much interest there is on iOS so he can decide if it's worth pursuing).

The Android version of the app is a whole different beast. It has been under development for a long time now and lets you control you camera in nearly every way possible, download images to your phone/tablet, run advanced bracketing/HDR etc. If you're on iOS and want to get the most out of DSLR Controller I'd suggest picking up a decent but cheap Android tablet (eg Nexus 7) to use with it instead.

Regarding ML-specific features being added to DSLR Controller: That's probably a bit of a long shot but it might happen one day. Chainfire (the author of DSLR Controller) knows about ML, in fact I'm pretty sure he's even modified ML to use for his own research purposes before. There's also another app called ML Controller: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hu.sztupy.android.mlcontroller  (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/ml-devel/Sw0B1kpFlIU). It doesn't work with recent builds of ML however the author (SztupY) has expressed a bit of interest in reviving it here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9570.0

Probably the best approach would be to add an API to ML that allows certain functions to be controlled remotely (USB/Wifi), then hope that authors like the above start supporting it. I think it's a big task however.

It's wicked! I bought a lilliput monitor because it wasn't possible back then. The android version sounds cool but I just got me an ipad air so I don't think I'll get an android tablet just for monitoring.
The only problem for monitoring with the ipad is how do you put it on a tripod or a rig..?

garry23

Just an observation. We know that an iPad will connect to a Canon DSLR, eg I have CamRanger running and integrated, in clunky way, into my ML-based workflow, eg for my TS-E workflow:
- connect CamRanger (CR) via USB
- use CR to compose
- use CR to tilt and rotate the plane of sharp focus, ie CR has focus peaking and it is clearer to see focus than on the small MZ focus box in ML
- shift as required
- use ML Auto-ETTR to set the optimum shutter speed
- take picture :-o)

In other words convergence between Canon, CamRanger and Magic Lantern means a content photographer!

I have a ruige monitor too, but the ipad seems to be a lot more accurate to my eyes, and you can use both monitors at the same time, that´s great because i don't like to have the 5d monitor off when using an external screen.

To put it on a tripod, just buy a mount for ipad :)

And for the jailbreak, yes you have to do it...but hey! don't have you installed ML on your canon dslr ? Same thing here if you want the best for your gear...

I hope they Will add some great features like controls, raw video and ml support...etc, but for now as a simple monitor, it´s a really Nice option !! Love it

Malex

My ipad already got out of jail :-) so I'll test it soon!
I just saw videos of the android version, it's really cool! It would be even cooler if it was a ML remote.

Been using DSLR Controller on a rooted Kindle for quite some time. I built a homemade case for it too so it can attach to the shoulder rig.

Love DSLR controller when I use it, but I don't use it "that" often.

Interested in trying Cam Ranger with iPad since it has bigger screen and seems like better color depth.

Here is a post from my blog that talks to CamRanger.

For example, I used it this morning at the shoot where I took the two snaps I have just posted.

I used CamRanger with my 5DIII + tilt-shift.   The CamRanger, with focus zoom and focus peaking allowed me to nail the focus. As I have said elsewhere on the ML site, if you can't afford CamRanger and don't have an iPad, then ML magic zoom and focus peaking is the next best thing.

Cheers

Halfway through the post. I shoot RE and Architecture timelapse as well. For the RE shoots, cam ranger, I can see coming in very very handy. Also use the 14mm Roki as well with PT Lens correction.

You can't get anything else than an extra monitor? There aren't any controlls in your ipad screen... Is it possible to control ISO, aperture, speed? Or it is just live stream to the ipad? Thank you

garry23

Just to be clear. The CamRanger interacts with the EOS and allows near full control and more.

The CamRanger does not 'talk' to ML.

For now yes, it acts only as monitor, no controls at all...
Dev seems to be more working on the android version than ios, i think there is not enougth interested people...

Hope to have some update soon

Hi i would like to ask if there are some news in ipad <-> canon dslr (with ml).
I hope that it is not bad when iam replying in old post.

Alfazzz

Hi,
unfortunately, there was no updates released for this tweak since the first beta version i mentioned in this post (for ipad). And there will be no update i think...
So no for ios8 and ios9, it only works with ios7 (i'm still with this os version and it's working).
Not very useful finally because no controls but was fun to try :)

You should go with android tablet, you will get lots more controls with this app.

hm thats sad, i like the apple's ipad and atm i have no android device. Thanks for reply anyway and have a good day :]

jonathan.grevsen

I use dslr controller with wireless control of 5D M3 and it works with ML

Alfazzz

Jonathan, more infos could be useful, your os ? Ipad, android ? Version of dslr controler...
Just saying that is working does not help anybody.

Anyway, on ipad i don't think it is working except on ios7 (i see so much people asking for an ios update on chainfire google plus, so...)

I use Qdslrdashboard you don't have to jailbreak your iPad and works with Android,PC ,Mac with canon,Nikon ,and Sony Dslr cameras .
You can use it with the builtin wifi in the camera or you can buy a TP-Link MR-3040 router and put some custom firmware on it like what the Camranger does but for $53 AUD from eBay .
