Need held with ml and auto focus on my canon 50d

Hi, I have tried a second time to operate Magic lantern through my canon 50d and just want it for basic video, I cannot for the life of me get the auto focus to operate without having to press the * button.
What do I need to do, I;ve trawled through various forums for info on this and all to no avail..
Can somebody please help??? should it be focusing itself as i move the camera around from subject to subject..
