Hey guys I'm new to Magic Lantern and I'm currently at a 50% success rate.  I installed Magic Lantern on one of my 60Ds with little fanfare.  The instructions were clear and the install went flawlessly.

I tried to install on my LifePixel IR converted 60D and ran into problems.  Here is my best guess what happened.  I installed Magic Lantern and the camera rebooted successfully.  While the camera was in M shooting mode I was trying to mirror the various settings between my two cameras.  I switched modes from M to Av, the camera powered off, and I haven't got it to come back up since.

Last night I spent a few hours studying all the different 60D failure threads on the board and tried a variety of different things and still no luck:

  • I pulled the card from the IR and placed it in my color.  It booted, complained about improper shutdown, but it still came up and ran normally.  Placing the color card in the IR camera resolved nothing.
  • I tried a variety of battery/card pulls and different mode selections and still nothing.
  • I prepped a card with the Flashing LED autoexec.bin and the SD card LED does flash.
  • I prepped a card with both debugging autoexec.bins posted here, the SD card LED doesn't flash, and the card has no log files.
  • I left the camera without a battery or card installed on my desk overnight.  I tried to boot it this morning and while I had more SD card LED activity than before, the
  • camera failed to start.
Since I had more activity after leaving the camera empty overnight, I left the camera empty before leaving for work.  When I get home, in an hour or so, I plan on loading the debugging autoexec.bin on a card and trying again.  Was also thinking of trying the "C" to "CA" and back to "C" shooting mode trick that seemed to work for some others.  Beyond that I've got nothing.

If that doesn't work I'm at a loss for what to try next.  I have a sneaking suspicion that the problem may be related to either the custom WB or the Sensor Dust Removal being disabled.  Any help you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Just got home and tried:

  • Freshly formatted a SD Card, copied ML, copied the Startup Log autoexec.bin, inserted card, inserted battery, nothing.
  • Same as above with ROM Dump autoexec.bin, same response, nothing.
  • Tried swapping between all the different modes and nothing.
  • Tried LED Blink autoexec.bin and the LED still blinks
I've found that I have to do things in a particular order in order to get any response.

  • Power switch in Off position
  • Remove card and battery
  • Insert card, close door
  • Insert battery, close door
  • LED blinks
This is the only way I can get the LED to blink.  Once it starts blinking turning the power switch on/off has no effect.  LED won't stop blinking until I remove the battery.  Pretty sure this is to be expected.  When trying with the other autoexec.bin files I get a single blink and then nothing.

Thanks again for anyone who can help shed light on this.

Looks like it's getting stuck early in the boot process.

I can prepare a custom autoexec to dump the ROM from the bootloader, and another one to blink Canon's debug messages with the card LED. Since you have two 60D's, I can try to write a decoder for these messages that runs directly on the camera.

edit: here's the ROM dumper from bootloader (60D only): autoexec.bin

Please send me the ROM files by PM (not here).

If anyone wants to adapt it to other cameras, here's the source: reboot.c (needs 3 stubs from the bootloader, easy to find)

I had same problem on 60D when Nightly failed to install and never has worked. I pulled battery out and reformatted card on computer and 60D booted up. Happened several times..don't know ... Maybe bad version?
