I really hope I can get something on 5D3 regarding preview this year . .

Thank you for your amazing work!
I have both EOS M and 5D3, improvement for 700d /Eos M is a good news but improvement for 5d3 will be a little revolution because 5D3 is far better in terme of quality. It will not only be a cheap camera to achieve raw footages but a real cinematique camera for professionnal work.

When someone is wrong on the internet     :P

2 years ago, I unfortunately shot an entire day with 12 bit lossless, not to my knowledge, I had been messing around with slow mo and bits and forgot to reset it to 14 bit lossless..

....

I recommend you stick to 14 bit, unless you are okey with losing close to a stop of usable dynamic range.

2 years ago... maybe you're issue is solved now.

I use a lot of 12 bits without issues. You can see on my shots that i don't have any dynamic range issue.

The only problem could be on liveview when recording in 12 bits it's a little bit darker with a green cast on the screen.

In crop mode, ETTR histogram also doesn't work so well, maybe highlights were clipped on your shots.

I record in 14-bit lossless or in normal FullHD in uncompressed14 bit, to keep the best amount of colour.

With my experience there are no signifiant differences between 12 and 14 bits even in very complexe scene.

I'm always using 12 bits in 3,5k mode because is continuous (almost in 14 bits)

I used to shot in 14 bits uncompressed when lossless and 12 bits doenst existe yet but lossless is one of the best improvement.

Wow! Which lenses did you use? The texture is very interesting.

Canon L 24-105 F4.
But I also use a black pro mist 1/4 filter.

Small hacks = 81MB/s
Small hacks +LVFACE/AEWB = 88MB/s
Small hacks +LVFACE/AEWB + Cartridge cancel = 88MB/s

And what about. Small hacks + LVFACE (without AEWB)?

Did you grade ML footage only in MLV App, or did you add something in your NLE?

Only mlv app because it's just a color preview. I've added contrast, sharpeness 25%  and a lut (roll film emulation) 50 %. mix

Thank you ML700, Bruno Italiano

Mind sharing a bit more details about your ML workflow? Did you grade ML footage only in MLV App, or did you add something in your NLE? Which format do you export from MLV App?

Thanks

Sergio

The film is not finished yet. What I like the most with MLV app is that without any effort it can achieve perfect cinematic shots.

So it's not the definitive color editing here.

Here is some shots from R5. I'm only the director not operator on these. I only shots with my 5d mark iii. It has been shot in canon clog3. It could look great too but needs a serious color editing.

My latest 35minutes film is shot mostly with a canon R5 4k 10 bits 4.2.2 but i shot few material with my 5D mark iii too
And I prefer magic lantern images. Especially because mlv app give us a prefect cinematic shot without any effort.
Thank you Danne, bilal, Markus and ilia for your amazing work.

I will try but...few MB/s less to write. I dont know how im gonna live with that  :'(

Shutter issues are related to lface + aewb hack. You should only use lface hack and one more hack.
No need more with 3.5k mode. Is continuous with 12 bits, SD 160MHZ and card spanning enable using crop realtime previous or even most of time  with the new grey super fast preview

New builds:

GRAY_ULTRA_FAST is enabled for all presets when in menu Crop rec preview is set to Auto mode. Turn to OFF and framing works the old way alternating between color and b&w preview. GRAY_ULTRA_FAST is fast though, more useful.

One of the best Updates. Thank you Danne!
We have our (almost) realtime preview ;-)

Of course it's b&w and low resolution but it's really better than half frame colour/ half frame b&w and very very low.

Thank you so much, @Grognard, I really appreciate this super useful information! I will purchase two 128G

You're welcome. But keep in mind that a 128GB card is only ~119GB free spaces. And with losless compression, It could be more depending of the scene. But I'm sure 20 minutes will be OK.

Do you happen to know how many approx. minutes of 5.7k anamorphic RAW would fit on a 128GB card?

5.7k 14bits lossless is around 5.5GB per minute.
12 bits lossless is around 5.2GB per minute.
It should be more than 20 minutes by 128GB card.

I will shoot a film only in 3.5K mode and i have calculed that is around 6.2GB in 12 bits.
I have
- 2 CF 128GB
- 2 CF 64GB
- 2 CF 32GB
- 1 SD 256GB
- 2 SD 128GB

That should be enough ;)

Should be enough for a day work ;)

5DIII: To be precise there are some mode with realtime preview. Most anamorphic modes are giving a real time preview, even if distorted.

Yes. Realtime previews.... but distorted (anamorphic) or cropped (3k, 3,5k).

Thank you for the infos ! So we won't get real time preview in the near future for 5dmkiii ? Or it is possible with external monitor or hdmi viewfinder ?

No realtime preview with hdmi device.
Maybe We will get real time preview in the futur but nobody working on it.
Try this tip : put a Phone with a director's viewfinder application beside your camera to achieve an almost perfect realtime preview of what you record ;) better than nothing...

But we have real time preview with eosm and 70D while recording 1x3 anamorphic ? right ?

Right on the Eos M and 700D (not 70d sorry) But only in 1440x1806 not with the new full anamorphic resolution (1736x 2178).
#40
5d mark iii:  No realtime preview exept with fullhd.
No link between Sd hack (160 mHz or 240 mhz)

Maybe, do you mean continuous recording ? It's continuous without sd hack for 5.7k anamorphic.  And it's continuous in 3.5k with 160Mhz hack (don't need 240MHz).

Thank you for your reply!

In pratical when recording, we can switch between crop realtime preview and framing greyscale. Framing is usefull to check the correct frame before switching back to crop realtime preview which is stable.
If we can finetune the delay and achieve an almost realtime b&w preview for at least 5 seconds (not really need more) it will be enough for following moving subjects without a proper realtime preview.

@Bilal.

I wonder if there way in 3.5k mode (5DIII) when recording to force framing in B&W and not switching between Black and White and color.

Maybe it could improve speed? It's the case in anamorphic, only black and White and higher framerate. In practice it's a very low resolution in black and white but almost in real time.

Thank you.

Mine sandisk 170mbs 256g doesn't work on Eos M but works on 5DIII with the new patch.... and it works with the previous patch on Eos M but not on 5D mark iii

All mode 12bit or 10bit can record more times.

Really ? I didn't notice any improvement about records times.  By the way it was already continuous in 3.5k 12bits and uhd 10 bits.
#45
I've tried.

It works flawless!
On 5D mark iii it's very stable, but it's not a real improvement because of the 133mb/s limit.

But I've noticed something intresting. My SanDisk 256g 170mbs use to work now with the brand new sd-uhs hack while it wasn't the case before, even in 160mbs. But use to work before on Eos M with old sd_uhs but not the New one!

on EosM it's very usefull! Now we can reach continuous 3k 10bits or continuous 5k anamorphic 14 bits lossless.

thank you Bilal.

I can't get 3.5k 14bit lossless or 12bit lossless continuous
10 bit is continuous, manually stopped 4 minutes later (118mb/s)

Your CF is the issue. 12 bits is continuous and 14 bits "almost" in every situation sometimes it could stop but is rare.

  • I used the 3.5K 1:1 centered x5 preset, 14-bit lossless, 3584x1500, 25 fps...
How did you get 25 fps? With fps overdrive enable?
#48
That could seems strange to pay for a ML feature. But we had already asked to find a way to help ML devs! So I Will contribute for sure to thank you for what you achieved Bilal even if this feature will not be very useful for me.

I know you don't want to work on 5D3 to unblock correct framing liveview. but if you change your mind, you could ask money for the price of a new R5 ;)

thank you.

EOS M vs 5D Mark III

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV7a5Ffz5s8

5D III is far better but 1080p is  bad compared to anamorphic or crop mode even on EOS M
#50
@bilal and Danne

I've noticed that 5k anamorphic mode works with fps overdrive enabled (24fps) but not 5kfrtp.
How to explain that ?

Is it the key to also make this work on 5d3?
