Feature Requests / Re: HDR video in still type dual-ISO?

Alright, so here's what I've learned:

    • DUAL-ISO VIDEO happens when you record video with dual-iso option and RAW video option turned on.
    • I had to download and install reddeercity's linked module or it to start working on 5DmkII.
    • You get a .MLV file that MLVAPP can process into normal video
    • The hashed footage (.MLV before the processing step) is cut to a 2:1 ratio. At the moment I am not sure whether this was not just my mistake or if it is normal; it seemed 3:2 during recording.

I am also not sure how pixel binning affects stretching as at 2:1 it would make current XYXY ISO lines into XXYYXXYY, and I suppose that would affect interpolaton. If there's a coherent guide on this I'd appreciate a link, but otherwise just Thanks, Red. :)

This is my first time hearing of dual iso on the 5D2. Thanks for this post. Has there been any main advantages in using it so far?

Hey it worked!! Somewhat. Thank you so much!

It recovered about 90% of the files. Unfortunately, there was 3 main shots that couldn't be recovered so we have to reshoot the entire sequence anyway. Thank you so much for this!

@A1ex I've already written back to the card at this point, but I can easily format a card just so that you can experiment with (maybe that would defeat the purpose).

BUMP!

This happened to me today. Anybody have any advice on recovering MLV files from a formatted card?!?

As you say pretty simple but great!

Did you end up keying out the green screen of just left it in B&W?

And did the DNG files were heavy in after?

Hey Thanks! Only for the darker shots did I actual key out the green. I don't know what you mean by heavy, but the process  editing the DNG's was smooth when I turned on the "Fast Draft" option which uses the GPU more for workflow. It did take longer than editing a regular H.264 file though

I would get the EOS M with a battery adapter and mount cheap Sony NPF-Batteries. They last me for 6 to 9 hours on one battery.

There is NO MagicLantern RAW video camera that can do decent AutoFocus continuously though. Everyone is out of luck on that one. I recommend getting a gimbal with follow focus! It's been working wonders for me: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=24459.msg220435#msg220435

Shot this video in ML RAW. It was simple enough, but using ML was awesome as always.

Canon 5D mkII
Rokinon 24mm 1.4
Rokinon 85mm 1.4
MLV RAW 1856x1238 5:3 (12bit) 23.976fps
MLVAPP to DNG - Edited everything else After Effects

Fedback is appreciated! Here's some of the BTS https://www.instagram.com/p/B1yl8y2FRGb/

That's an extremely long workflow for the first one. MLVAPP can cut your time "BRIDGE, ACR, AFTER EFFECTS, MEDIA ENCODER PROCESS" by almost quadruple. MLVAPP is pretty powerful, especially if you have a solid GPU. Of course Resolve is faster too.

But I understand wanting to work with camera raw.

1) I select a DNG in Bridge, edit it in ACR. Copy those image qualities and paste to the rest of the DNGs in the clip folder.
2) I assemble the individual DNGs into a single video clip in After Effects and export to Media Encoder.

I pull those ProRes .movs into premiere, interpret them to 24fps (to smooth out camera shake), edit them together, and export to MP4 via h.264, vbr 30, max 50.

Bro... what? You should be using the "Smart Import 2" script for After Effects. That would remove the Bridge-ACR step and take you straight into Camera Raw in AE. Here's a link to it: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13354.0 . Will probably save you hours of time. You can also do the warp stabilizer effect in AE to skip your having to use premiere step. I think you exporting the footage so many times may have something to do with the quality loss (I could be SUPER wrong about that though).

Also, next time consider shooting in 12-bit. There is practically no difference in dynamic range in 12-bit, but you can shoot at higher resolutions. I think having more resolution would help you in cases like these.

Denoiser III by redgiant is an absolute god-send. You can crank the shadows up and slap denoiser on there and you'll get crystal clear footage. I also think you should add sharpening (unsharp mask) to some of the footage. Sometimes the fish gets slightly blurry and this would improve on that end.

I have some decent gimbal experience. I would recommend the Crane 2 for your EOS M. It's made for larger cameras, but you can't beat it's battery life and features. The LAB is good too, but you can find the Crane 2 for around $200 usd on ebay.

I agree with Jonit that the Crane M2 would be okay, but I'd still go with the Crane 2. There are two things that suck when using a gimbal and canon/magic lantern:

1. There is no autofocus. You will need a follow focus system. Luckily you can buy the Crane 2 with a follow focus system and you'll be set. Trust me it's pretty annoying to try to focus using your hands on a gimbal. Especially when on longer focal length lenses

2. Swapping batteries is a pain.. Especially for the EOS M (875mAh per battery). I would probably a battery port and connect a beefier battery to the gimbal. Something that looks like this:

Here is a picture of my setup. I use the 5D mark II connected with Sony's amazingly cheap and beefy NPF batteries. This setup lasts me for 8+ hours on a shoot. I'd only have to swap SD cards because of large ML RAW files. This entire setup costs under $950 including camera and lens.

Dual ISO video! It's basically a limited version of raw with a couple downsides. But it can give you way more dynamic range. It can also compliment raw and it has a MUCH smaller filesize.

To Others: This low-budget broadcasting option crushes a lot of Ebay/Amazon/Chinese alternatives. You'll have the power of a Canon ML Camera for photo and the ability to broadcast HD content with a Canon Lens - value depreciates much slower. Varying body you'll lose auto-focus features, but on a 3 Team (two cameras, one operator) this is hardly an issue, zooms aren't standard in low-level broadcasting. It's an easy way to become affordable to small business events and gain an edge on all forms of "Streaming Content" - made possible by ML.

Give your T2i purpose again by making it your webcam, etc.

Would love to see your setup of this mate. Thanks for this and please show us your magic!

https://www.slrlounge.com/adobe-announces-the-updates-to-lightroom-ecosystem-weve-been-waiting-for/

"Today, Adobe announced updates to the Lightroom ecosystem, including GPU-accelerated editing in Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw, providing a smoother and more responsive experience. Finally! "

Has anyone tested using cDNGs with this new update? I can only imagine this giving AE and premiere a sort of Resolve like speed if the GPU is actually being used.

It is possible to color correct without having to start my edit all over again?

Yes. I'll say it step by step.

1. Open the Original DNG clip in AE. Make sure frame rate matches your premiere by right clicking and interpreting footage
2. In AE, Color correct the original DNG clip.
3. Render it out as a MOV or H264 file
4. In premiere, replace the Original DNG's with the newly rendered MOV's

It will automatically replace the clips in your original edit with the color corrected ones.
#289
You did it backwards. If you open the ORIGINAL DNG files in AE and then color correct them, you can replace the footage. That's probably the fastest way.

Resolve is way better though.

I swear I was JUST about to buy a camera... I was tired of waiting on the a7SIII or the Canon EOS X or A1ex to get off from vacation. I was just going to say forget it and buy a bmpcc4k.

Then you had to go and post this.

Too bad it doesn't have a flippy screen. But I'll buy it anyway i guess

I'm going to take a night shot with 5D3 + ML.

I made a test with Sigma 35mm at f/1.4, T/30 and ISO 3200. The result was a very noisy shot because the high ISO, but even setting ISO 1600 doesn't help because image is darker so noise appears anyway.

So, how could I solve it?

Why are you shooting RAW in low light? 5D3 isn't too bad at low light in regular settings. Just shoot in MOV/H264

Also. Try using fps override. If you shoot at 12 frames per second then you can drop your shutter down to let in double the light. Just have her do her actions in slow motion if you have to! (You could also try 6fps and could let in quadruple the light). You can then bring it into an editor and adjust the speed. Just make sure she moves SUPER slow. I can imagine it will be hard to get sharp focus if you're at 1.4 too and all that motion blur.

Just shoot in H.264. RAW shouldn't really need to be used honestly in my opinion.

MLVApp is for MLV only.

I have a question about this since you bought it up. Is there a way to convert DNG+WAV's to an actual MLV file? Like if I'm using my black magic camera to capture raw, could I somehow have it so that I can edit both my Canon and BMPCC4K footage in MLVapp?

Not really sure if it will speed up my workflow or not. I was just curious if it's possible to turn any video sequence into MLV? And possibly even mock the metadata (manual lens info and what not).

Super Takumar!!!!! I used to love this lens! The only bad side is that it makes shots really yellow, but it's soooo good! Good to see someone who's good at compositing shots use it. These shots were amazing!

I can see where you pushed the colors, but to me those shots were worth it! The dynamic range was incredible. Maybe next time you can denoise? It actually wasn't that bad to be honest. Keep it up and keep posting! I'm looking forward to more.

P.S be careful of the radiation that comes off of that lens!

This was really really good. Your shots were incredibly smooth and sharp. I don't know how you got those kinds of shot WITHOUT a gimbal. Your hands are impressive haha.

You just made me realize something. The nicest thing about shooting with Magic Lantern is you can shoot close to a square if you want to, which is great for social media and phones! You can even shoot anamorphic and make it go back to 16:9 if you wanted!

Hey Quick Question. Is there any way to 'Undo' in MLV APP?

Like I adjusted a shadows slider but I want to undo the adjustment

Just because it is a eFAQ (extremely frequently asked question) I decided to bring the few clicks into a tutorial video: Howto install dforts focus pixel maps into MLVApp. I hope it helps.

It would be helpful if dfort could post this Youtube video on the FIRST POST of this thread. I think it wouldn't be so frequently asked if that was on the first post.

It says video unavailable. Maybe it doesn't work in my country? (USA)

Sorry for the noob questions. Just trying to see if this can actually benefit/save time on my workflow:

Can you explain what lagarith is? You export lagarith from MLVapp? Or Is lagarith something that you use exporting in resolve?

Are you asking if there is an option to change the camera's button layout?
#300
I can literally put this video on a loop and watch it for the rest of my life.

Nice shots. Truly amazing. I wish I knew which ones were EOSM and 5D mark2. I noticed some aliasing so maybe those were 5d2? idk. Amazing footage regardless.

Did you shoot full 14bit? 12bit? 10?
