Forum and Website / Re: Become a Moderator

Hello,

I would like to apply.

I currently work from home as a freelance post production out of Los Angeles UTC -8:00 so I'm on my PC and have all the free time in the world. I love the "Share your videos" section and can be super active in that. I would love to become more active and I think I'd be most useful on the "shoot preparation", and "post processing workflow" areas.

This was amazing! Keep posting! Sharp and bokeh. The EOS M is apparently more cinematik though

Some minor feedback, I wish you would have picked a less orange white balance.

"Lacklustre" issues in non-crop mode but not in crop mode? Really?
Anything substantial (samples) available backing this claim?

IMO this thread reached esoteric level like some audiophile discussions.

I was just throwing something out there because the eosm outshining the 5d3 made no sense to me. Maybe this person just needs to see more pixels

I picked up a 5Diii..., but the image ... has a lacklustre look about it. (I'm using the 1080p mode, not the higher resolution ones.)

That may be your problem. Try the crop modes.

Have you seen the short film Sea Gypsies? That entire thing was shot on a 5D3 magic lantern and it looks amazing. You may be doing something wrong mate.

Sounds like everything we've ever wanted...

we promised not to work on 1D series of cameras... a promise is a promise.

Thanks for the links to previous posts A1ex. I'll stop beating the dead cat. I just didn't know much about the reasoning.

Hello ML family,

Just wanted to revisit this. I know that it may spark some annoyance within the community, but I have been searching through the forum (177 threads :D) looking for the reason no one wanted to work on the 1D's and this was the best that I could find:

Quote from: Walter Schulz on August 12, 2013, 10:07:02 PM
The developers were and are adamant about this: Hands off all cams labeled 1, the Cxxx and all the rest of the profi equipment bunch. Period.

I wanted to propose looking into this camera again. I know the seasoned developers are probably too busy to pick this up. This can be a project for the amateur developer community within ML that have been offering help in the forums and on twitter as such. I think it would be a great way to "train" people (like me), and it could come super in handy in the future of ML.

Here are the main benefits of this (that I can think of):

  • They are way cheaper than a lot of cameras. You can find some 1D's on ebay for under $300 USD.
  • Most of the 1Ds use Digic 4 and Digic 5. There has been substantial development for the cameras that use these image processors. Not sure if it would be easy to port, but I can imagine that it would make things a lot easier
  • They use CF CARDS!! Some even have dual card slots. This could be the camera that could break 5K RAW recording XD

Sorry if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about (i really don't). I just wanted to throw it out there. I ordered a 1DX and a 1Ds3 recently and wanted to throw the idea up in the air.

You should be hired and making money in Hollywood for such shots/colors/grading..... this was amazing

Have anyone tried those Cinegrain LUTs yet?

Those LUTs cost more than a 5Dmark3 so I'm probably good XD

That was so beautiful. Especially the portraits. You make RAW proud! Can't believe FD lenses can get this kind of quality

A question is why I'm getting greater resolution along the X-axis and no increase along the Y-axis, even when switching to aspect ratios that allow for more resolution along the Y-axis?

I don't know the exact reason, but all ML cameras have a MAX vertical resolution in standard mode and in crop mode. Maybe someone else can explain that part.

I used to use this calculator to calculate the ratios that I needed. I don't know if it's been updated or not (I'm sure it hasn't kept up with the nightly builds), but here it is. You can see that the max resolution for the 5d3 in crop is 1320. https://rawcalculator.netlify.com/calculator_desktop

Some food for thought.

After reading these I now get a grasp of how hard this is on the developers.

Just let us know where/when/how to send my money whenever it's figured out!

I'm actually curious. I thought EF-S lenses couldn't fit on full frame cameras. How did you do that? Did you have to modify it? Does the aperture control still work? This is potentially game changing for crop mode.

I most definitely would like to donate! Like on a per month thing if so.

I do agree with a1ex on the bitcoin thing seeming kind of underground, but I think I get it (I love that it is a vanity address too). Is there a way to do like a Patreon or a Ko-fi? Or something under the name autoexec_bin? Bitcoin is probably the safest bet legally though. I think if there was a little more public outreach then it would be easier for people to donate and know that work is actually happening.

Has Canon ever "gotten mad" before? I remember watching (and believing) a conspiracy video about MagicLantern and how the community is basically Canon sneakily releasing firmware updates while not being held accountable legally and for warranty.

It would be nice if there was MagicLantern Wish List. There is ways to donate without money. I would happily send my EOS RP over for a month to someone, knowing that it may be a brick later or it may be c500.

(The 90D sales must be hurting  :D )

Anyone else not excited at all about this? I thought about getting an RP just to have it as a decent autofocus backup camera, but I honestly don't even want to support them for removing such a feature in the first place. I really don't understand how the EOS RP could possibly match my decade old 5Dmark2 in any other way (maybe besides high iso performance).

I know by now that Canon is aware of Magic Lantern's existence and how much it has done for them. Why wouldn't they add the basic features on cameras that the ML guys have added on an old 50D that was made in 2008? Or better yet, why would they 'lock' their cameras to make it hard for the ML guys to get into? I can't even imagine what 10bit autofocus on an EOS R would look like. I know a lot of people like to use the argument of "Canon is just protecting their cinema line," but would an actual film studio use a hacked camera for a big production instead of an Arri Alexa? Wouldn't they make more money if tens of thousands of people had a super cool/ budget camera, than a few hundreds of studios having a a c100/c300? Most studios that use their cinema line are sad that they couldn't get something better anyway. Even the Blackmagic Ursa Mini can shoot RAW 4K and is cheaper than the EOS R.

Maybe the reason Canon excelled is because of the 2008 financial crisis. Maybe we need another financial crisis to get them to actually innovate instead of giving us bricks that the iPhone could do 2 phone generations ago.

Okay I'm done. (I'm just going to wait for the a7siii or the blackmagic fullframe camera.)

For sure, and the Vid-Atlantic anamorphic filter is actually going to be my next gear purchase. I've heard varying degrees of success from various people using varying focal lengths, contrary to Vid-Atlantic's website, so I'm going to grab one to test myself. I have yet to see any Vid-Atlantic anamorphic filter tests using Magic Lantern, so I am excited to see the results!

I saw you post on that other anamorphic spot about finding one for the 24-105. I have the 77mm Cinemorph filter by vidatlantic. I don't have a 24-105 but i have the canon 28-135 and I can test it out for you on that lens. The only thing that sucks is that you lose two stops of light using it so I rarely use it on anything that's not a prime and it vignettes so heavily at anything below 55mm. I also have the one that's for Sigma lenses and goes on the back which reduces the vignette. I'll throw together a test video for you this weekend.

There is this one guy named Tito Ferradans on youtube that explains everything budget anamorphic ever. My favorite mod of his is the Helios 44-2 mod.

@yourboylloyd

I use a dummy battery that connects to the DC 8.0 V power outlet on the side of the Crane 2. I find in most cases that the Crane 2 carries enough juice to power my 6D and the Crane 2 itself for an entire shoot day.

I didn't even know that the crane 2 could power the camera!!! This is mindblowing to me. At first I would spend about 15 mins taking off the camera, swapping batteries, rebalancing then shooting (which was annoying). If I would've nkown about this I just would have bought hundreds of those little crane batteries!

Quote from: Tyronetheterrible on October 07, 2019, 07:16:02 PM
I was one of the unfortunate ones to have purchased the Crane 2 BEFORE they included the servo follow focus in the box, but the camera control cable does an adequate enough job of pulling focus for me. I'm still considering getting it separately though, as it would be nice to control the zoom using it.

That probably is the way to go honestly. I myself only have one good auto-focus lens, so I need it for my manual primes.

Quote from: Tyronetheterrible on October 07, 2019, 07:16:02 PM

If I were to purchase the BMPCC 4K, I would of course purchase the Metabones SpeedBooster 0.64 XL alongside with it to get close enough to full-frame, and to use my preexisting EF lenses. The fact that it can also shoot in 12-bit RAW (BRAW) would be good enough for me.

Does the Crane 2 work with the BM4K? I remember a lot of people saying they were having record trigger/autofocus/control issues when using it with it. And of course you have to buy that offsetting plate thing because the bm4k doesn't fit most ggimbals.

@yourboylloyd

Honestly, checking out this particular BMPCC 4K user's work was enough to convince me. This is exactly the kind of cinematic look I want to achieve:

That video is pretty nice. Be mindful that there is more than RAW video going on here. This guy shot on the vidatlantic anamorphic filters, which change the look of video entirely and only work on a select few lenses properly.

Keep me updated on what you decide to do! I'm extremely curious.

...along with the ability to follow focus using just a mini USB cable for the Zhiyun Crane 2, are the main reasons I'm considering upgrading to 5D3 as opposed to a BMPCC 4K. Although i'm still teetering on the fence...

You use the crane 2 too? I love the 5d2/crane 2 combo! What do you do for a battery solution? This is my setup. It's the most lightweight thing I can think of. I also have shoulder straps that I can hook up to help support the weight.

I am thinking of upgrading to the 5d3 too. I wouldn't recommend going from a 6D to a small tiny micro 4/3rds sensor. You're going to lose so much of your wideness and depth. Now that I can shoot in RAW I can't see myself going to any standard 8 bit camera. Although the Panasonic S1H with 10bit is obviously my dream right now.

Wait a minute.. What is the iso gain hack?? Can't find it anywhere when I search through the forum.

Dope video btw.
#273
That's some crazy dynamic range I tell you.... Especially the window/studio shots.

Great work.
#274
I think your request is confusing. My questions are:

Quote from: thanhha146 on October 02, 2019, 06:12:12 AM
I want to record native h264 1080mov in a 5d2, and use ML only for Audio recording.

  • Are you using two different cameras or something? Like one 5D2 for Video and one for audio? Are is this all on the same camera? Your wording is a little confusing to me.
  • If you're using the same camera, how is it more beneficial to record ML audio separately? Just separate the video/audio channels in your editor
  • Are you wanting to have the .WAV file that MagicLantern can create? I guess in that case then is there truly a dramatic improvement in audio quality on MLV sound vs H.264 sound (question to forum)?
#275
May I ask what are you CPU and memory specs? I'm only curious because exporting Prores vs cDNG out of MLVapp isn't that much slower for me.
