Nice. Maybe a practical implementation would be to take the picture when a certain steady threshold is reached. Like when you handhold a 500mm lens press shutter and then try to hold it as still as possible to avoid shake. If you don't reach the chosen  threshold value, you should try other hold positions and measure if that improves stability.

General Help Q&A / Re: Stack Focus
November 05, 2012, 08:09:35 PM
Hi,

Yes that works. I normally use play instead of snap with a start delay of 5 seconds to wait until the camera is back in rest.

To cover a range of 44 steps divided by 10 means 5 photos

This workflow is made a year ago. Did you install Avisynth110525.exe from the avisynth folder?

Maybe you get better results from this service: http://hdr.glogger.mobi/upload_hdr.php

Researching new hdr post workflow options is on my todo list for a while.

Very nice work. The snails seems to move a tiny bit out of focus but the lights in the background make it look very dynamic.....at least for a snail.

Of course you are free to make your own artistic choices. But it is my opinion that in music videos the audio is the leading part and the video should enhance the music by rhythmic cuts. Guide the viewer by putting accents on key moments in the song that are important to the band/composer.  Like when a new guitar jumps in show the first played chord. Adapt video mood to changes in the song mood. If the band displays a lot of energy on stage. Bring that in and show how the band expresses the song on stage.

General Chat / Arctic expedition
October 16, 2012, 08:01:23 PM

Hi,

I volunteered for the upcoming expedition to Spitsbergen in the Arctics in 2014. It is an environmental research expedition that brings along artists like film makers to document it. I have a background in environmental sciences. I want to be one of the film makers. But the funds are not there yet. So they try to win the Dutch academic prize for 100k euro.

I'd really like you to vote on the frontpage of
http://sees.nl

select: "Team Over-levende Noordpool" (arctic survival) and choose "STEM' (vote)

Thank you!

Great idea. I think this is a better alternative for subtle focus stacking. At least the procedure is much faster and works even on insects in the field when the wind lays low for a tiny moment. I hope I can still find some insects to try it out.

I also have adaptall2 tamron macro lenses: 90mm f2.5 and one 300mm f5.6.
But I can replace both now since I bought a used EF100mm f2.8 which I also use in 600d cropzoom.

The main advantage of old 35, 50, 85mm primes is that the ones faster than f2.8 are relatively cheap. Same goes for a cheap 135mm f2.5-2.8. And they are very solid build and have a nice focus ring dedicated to precise manual focussing. It's also a joy to bring life back into these amazing pieces of engineering. And they have a certain look and image rendering you might like.
But prices have risen a lot last few years. For oldies from f2.8, I think you are better off buying a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or something. Old fast primes at and below 28mm are rare and expensive. Modern lenses cover wide angles much better. I like the superwides for timelapses. Also the Samyangs are worth considering at some price point.

Choices also differ from using a crop sensor or not. Full frame cameras have more advantage in creating shallow DOF than crop factor cameras. Especially at wider angles.

I made a 7D variation because of the news. When the contest starts we can do the 60D frontpage and photo of the month.

Very nice work thanks and very pretty picture. I'll try this one out right away!

[off topic] Is this Glassfrog from your south American hide?

Nice work. The cuts seem a bit random and not all in line with the rhythm.

Interesting documentary. It might improve with so narration to give more insight in the situation. Now some shots seem a bit long.

I find doing it manually works well and gives complete control of the result.

And how do you do this manually? As sharper details like to moss tops take less space then blurred details. What do you do with the edges. Does this involve some serious photoshop editing and precise skills on how things still  look natural?

Hi,

The MIR-24N(H) is in my opinion the best of the cheap 35/2 primes available. Got mine for 75eur and stopped me from searching further. Ok sharp right open and very nice bokeh. Not those harsh rings as with takumar 35/2 or vivitar 35 1.9. It knocks out strong lines in the background easily. I tried on a bookcase and It looks just great.
Many sample picture done with mir-24 are grainy photo scans and not very representative. I tried hard to find the photo that sold me but can't find it. I found this though. Made with both takumar s.m.c. 50 1.4 and mir 35/2 (someone else that appreciates this nice combo)

other samples.
