great work!

Interesting video and great results. Add noise does debanding and dithering is not a very obvious use. But good to know.

Really nice Malcolm. Well done. Great control over that tricky exposure. And YES we finally get the wedding movie category! There is so much nice work done with weddings and ML :D

Previously I separated the alternating frames by doubling the frame rate, then I duplicated the strip at the start making them all dark. Then I bumped the initial frame by 1 frame, making the duplicated strip start on a light frame. But it requires lots of manual manipulation of the strips, so it is liable to fail.

This time because I am duplicating each frame, via the strobe property, I can leave the speed up until the end.

Remember that the '50fps HDR 720HD resolution' effectively captures 2 exposures of 25fps footage, then we must merge the 2 exposures into a single frame. Thereby halving the frame rate.

The trim function simply adjusts the start frame so that you get the other frame type, I recommend using the 'trim value' to eliminate handling or clicking error.

I just reverse the process to separate out the alternating exposures, so I speed them up at the back end.

Lastly, about the detail in the tent, while you may not see the colour in the video image window the proof is in the waveform. I think that youtube removed to much light image detail. Remember that the original was flat lining in the bright areas, so I have achieved a much more gradeable result here. You can vary the balance between light and dark by altering the mix value.

Ahh understood. Thanks for the extra info. When I have time I'll start with following your movie step by step.

Wow this is soooo much fun. Well done!!
(I'm just having a hard time putting the Russian lines in google translate)

Thanks for the video.
I have some questions:

- If your stream is 50fps, why double the speed if you want to end with 25fps?
- Why do you trim the first frame if you don't do interpolation?
- It looks like the clipped tenttop becomes darker in the end results but I don't see any structure detail appearing.

Hi This is very nice stuff. But in order to get them in the gallery they need to be on Flickr. It was there because of the Magic Lantern Flickr group.

Still not active.

I hope we can fix that. The account import is not rock solid.

Meanwhile I was looking at your site at HidePhotography and remember seeing that before. I wanted to build a hide around my neighborhood. Still haven't done that but it's a great idea. And what you guys have accomplished is just amazing. I also love the photo's taken. The leaf cutter ants series is stunning to name one of the many.
Now I see you've got a 7D. Can ML still be of use to you?

Hey Bart,

I didn't think of using dithering! I had forgotten this could be done, nice!
I also think that the first one is better too, that grayish green is pretty close to white, I think that a more saturated color looks best there.

I did the dithering by making a gradient in photoshop from black to one of the blues in the palette. then switch to indexed color and select 10 colors there. Photoshop will take care of the dither pattern then.

I switched from bright yellow to this green to make the item draw less attention. The yellow is a real eye catcher (maybe because I like yellow). So if we put in yellow then I suggest to use it for the menu items. Maybe contrast is less but I can't keep my eye from yellow items.

EDIT There is something wrong with the font in the 10 item menu. With the 8 item menu both the menu items and help text are rendered very nice with symmetrical O's. While in the 10 item menu both the menu items and help text don't have symmetrical O's. So maybe the font renders better at certain sizes. With a little experimenting you can pick the ideal sizes for the font and build a menu out of those.

Hi Arthur,

I made a magiclantern.fm style variant. With dither gradient on top.

Hi Pelican,

I had to run an accountsync with the wiki. Your accounts should be active now in the wiki

I think the design of Arthur has potential. I see improvements in a proportional and condensed font used and the thoughts about contrast in the field.
But have some issues with space for just 8 items instead of 12 in the current ML design. The Expo menu is currently has 8 items so that fits nicely, but most other menu's hold closer to 12 items.
We have 10 tabs and way over 100 things to set.

Before we get to a new design I think we need to discuss the best way to setup the menus in general.
What design can hold over 100 functions and can maintain easy overview over operational settings. While set-once options could be in logical preferences. Maybe if we put all operational items in the main tab and make a small icon bottom right to open preferences related to the subject. And that can be a scrolling menu with all the preference in one list.

I have some thought about adding some task driven menus much like wizards or forms. So if you are in the field and think this situation requires a timelapse. Then you run the timelapse wizard. Example tasks are: timelapse, hdr video, rack focus, focus stack etc. These forms have all the settings in one page to complete the task. This mean some feature could appear on more of these forms. But that doesn't matter. You just have all the tools needed to complete the task in one place without irrelevant options.

Finally I want to ask Arthur to make a menu design with current ML layout but with proportional condensed font. Like the size you use for item help. And maybe try to adapt the selection bar with the black inner bar inside the blue for even more contrast. But keep the icons left. I think that would make it look better.

Hi Pedro,

You have a nice sense of picking the right flow of the shots with the music. With attention to accents and variations in the song.
And of course it's great what you can do with just a 550d and a 50mm 1.4. Just take the camera as it is and make something nice with it.

Maybe you can also upload these videos to youtube. Because your vimeo membership doesn't support HD playback when embedded in a website like this. Youtube doesn't have these restrictions
