Some shots stretched with wrong proportions.
And something weird with overexposed highlights. What camera is it?

Hi thank you for your reply. Yea I messed some of them up :(. Lesson learned.

What scenes in particular? Canon 60d, saving for a 5d3 [emoji1362]

Hi guys,

Feel like I learning as I go more and more with ML. Only just found out you can fine tune the resolution!

I shot some clips of a snooker game over xmas and made it into a short.

Would love your feedback, please be brutal, it will only help me in the long run.

Thanks, enjoy

Loved the grade on this. As said before stunning footage but for me it would be shorter. Phenomenal job all the same however.

Stunning colours! I love your work. The best for me was the star timelapse! Incredible!

Do you mind sharing your raw workflow?

Silky smooth hyperlapses!

Love the way you used the framing on the bridges!

Hi guys,

Link to my latest video from a trip to Berlin, Germany. https://youtu.be/2jOH6e8pzIs

This trip was a bit of an experiment, testing hyperlapses, timelapses and 60fps raw.

My workflow was as follows:
MLV raw viewer convert to DNG sequence
DNG to Pro Res using DaVinci Resolve
Edited in Premiere Pro
Lightroom for hyperlapses and timelapses

Would love some feedback! Good or bad

Thanks

Most of my photography is done with old lenses too, I have a small flickr album (press L when viewing to hide the notes someone left on my pictures)

They're only a problem if you can't bear to manual focus ;)

Cool :) will check them out and give it a spin!

Nice Flickr by the way!

Lovely colours! Some really rich and vivid scenes.

I'm interested in buying more vintage lenses however I love taking photos too.

Do you think they are practical for both?

Oh, I'm not that good to link you some of my works... I use a old 600D and Takumar lenses, nothing compared to the quality of your video, really.

It's a good workflow, but if you want even better results you should convert the MLV to CinemaDNG and do the color grading on Resolve, and export to ProRes. So, Premiere should not touch the color grading, it's the Resolve part of the process.
The ACES color processing would possibly be better than Log C, but I don't know about the color precision, since Canon cameras are not calibrated to it (as discussed on the thread linked above). Give it a test and post the results! :^)

Oh, yeah, that's a problem. The APS-C crop (1.6x) is very big...

I think 5D MKIII is your best option today if you want video quality and not waste too much money on high-end cameras like RED or Alexa.

I'm sure your being modest! If you ever post anything let me know :).

I will do some homework and post the results!

Yea 5d mkiii is what I'm saving for. A red is slightly out of my price range ha.

Thanks again!

Fuck yeah, beautiful! Much better than my own footages.
Have you tried color grading with ACES? Also, if you got some money, give it try to these cheap old lenses, like Helios 44. You would get much more light from those and get less noise...
It's great to see you using my tips!

edit: see this, but you already got the idea better than myself.

Thanks! I'm really happy with the colours :).

I'd love to see your footage if you have a link?

I haven't heard of it no? I feel like I might invest my time is resolve given it's already part of my workflow which is:

Mlvraw viewer > Dng with a log c profile
Dng into resolve > export to Pro res LT
Edit in premiere and chuck a LUT on.

If I had the skills I would bring back into resolve to colour / add a lut.

Unless you think your suggestion would yield better results?

As for the light, my maximum aperture is f2.8 and I do have an old 50mm Pentax f1.7 however my trouble is a cropped sensor, first being the low light performance and second a 50mm is effectively a 85mm.

My plan is to save for a second hand 5d mkiii, higher res, faster cards, just seems a better route to me?

Your tips have helped massively!

After sharing my first raw video on here I got some great tips, mainly from bpv5P, so thought I would share the results.

Few frames from a trip to London, feel free to leave feedback good or bad.

Gear:
Canon 60d
Canon 24-70mm f2.8

Settings:
10 bit Raw
2.35:1 Aspect Ratio
1728x736 Resolution downscaled to 720p
24fps

You have to turn on the "Synthesize Edges" option. If your footage don't match the sequence aspect ratio, then you need to apply "nest" first (right-click on the clip > "Nest")...

Thank you, you are a fountain of knowledge bpv5P!

I added wider matt bars to solve it intially but will give that option a go. Hope to post the results soon. I used a lot of your tips :)

Hi,

This is no doubt a simple fix but I can't find the answer.

I shot my footage in 2:35 aspect ratio raw. I have converted my footage to prores using resolve. I am now working with the edit in premiere pro and when adding warp stabiliser to clips it gives a frame shaking type look.

I understand this is down to my sequence settings but can't work it out. I want to be able to stabilise my clips then export in 16:9 to give the filmic matt bar effect.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Download the official mlrawviewer and check inside.
Likely me being incredibly dense. The program works perfectly exporting to Dng but when exported to pro res I get this screen for a few seconds then stops.

Thanks for your patience.

Is ffmpeg even in there? Need to fetch a version maybe.

Again sorry, I have downloaded the latest ffmpeg however where does this need to be located for MLRV to recognise it?

@Rob: yes, I know MOV export doesn't work on Linux, no pointer as to why ffmpeg doesn't receive the raw frames from stdin. Any help there is welcome.

Hi sorry, failed to mention, I'm on a Mac

Thanks

I've also installed version 1.5 but having the no export to prores problem.

Sorry total noob question but do I need to install anything other than the .dng?

This stuff is way over my head but exporting to pro res is just such an easier option for me.

Thanks

It depends on what software you're using, but most of them will interpolate using bad algorithms (nearest-neighbor interpolation). If you want good quality you should use something like Lanczos. There's some software that does this good interpolation, just search for it (I even think that there's plugins for premiere pro and after effects, I used to use AVIsynth's Spline64, though).
Thanks :). Will check it out and post the results :)

Personally from experience, I was given years ago some old Pentax K lenses. As long as you don't mind manual focus you can pick up a relatively fast 50mm f1.7 for next to nothing on eBay

I plan to save it in pro res 444, I understand that's still slightly compressed though.

As for the interpolation, I have been searching for an answer on that one. Will I export to 1080p pro res and that's how it's upscaled? Or am I missing something?

Hi Rob Curd, sorry if I haven't answered you... for some reason it didn't show me your reply on my account (or I just forgot to answer).
Anyway:
Yes, but only if you "clip" your highlights. You should use raw histograms and check if it's not clipped (out of the histogram). If it's not, then you can recover on post-processing using software...
ETTR is great if you know how to use, it will generate images with much less noise and higher dynamic range.

Yes, your post-processing is not ideal one. I would suggest you use MLVProducer, it's very simple to use.

Exactly, that's the right way to do that...

It's like a "other version" of Magic Lantern. You can download here:
http://builds.magiclantern.fm/experiments.html

No problem, you're welcome.

Thank you again!

I mentioned you in the other thread you kindly replied on as I tried 10bit RAW and it total changed my opinion on RAW.

Previously there was a huge delay from pressing record to capture but this was seamless.

I have a Canon 60d so limited by the buffer, I was able to get 1728x736 but 720p raw is far superior to h.264 1080p?

I am on a Mac so I have run mlvproducer on wine so will see how that hold up but looks very comprehensive from what I've seen.

My next projects are learning ETTR, Reading histograms and waveforms not to mention the colour grading / correcting rabbit hole!

Thanks again!
