The weird thing is I use almost every time the Magnifiied Liveview.

What do you mean by that?  Do you film at 5x magnification in the anamorphic 4128x2230 mode?  If yes, that explains your results.  In that case you are cropping just a small central part of the sensor area and the camera films 1x1 at some very low resolution.  I don't have the exact numbers since I don't have the 5D3 here but if you blow up this low-res image to full screen it is quite obvious that you will get a soft image.  Open your footage in MLVApp, press the "i" button and check your resolution.  It should say 1376x2230.  If it is much lower than that, then you have filmed at 5x magnification.  You should use the Magnifiied Liveview only for focusing and not for filming!

I also think that your lens is the problem.  Maybe it needs some adjustment.  You can check if that is true by the following experiment. Select a well lit wide angle landscape scene with a lot of fine detail, put your camera on a tripod, focus precisely using the manual focus ring at magnified Lifeview, stop the lens down to say F8 and film some footage at your 4128x2230 resolution.  Then, without moving the camera and  touching anything on the lens, take a CR2 still of the same scene.  Then crop the center part of the CR2 file to about 4128x2230 size, export a frame grab from your footage using MLVApp and compare both frames at 100% magnification using a viewing software such as FastStone Image Viewer (free, google it).  If there is no noticeable difference in sharpness, then obviously, the lens is to blame.  In that case, repeat the same experiment with another sharp lens and compare the results.  The 5DIII provides extremely sharp footage in the above anamorphic mode.

Deadcode,

Nobody can mimic your own experience with Magic Lantern.  You have your new camera in your hands now.  Instead of asking all these questions, why don't you just go ahead, test all available modes and check and see which one works best for you?  You have a large variety of mode choices and will very soon realize what increadible video features your camera offers to you.  Just pick one that you like most, test it out, learn how to use, practise a lot and you will soon start shooting these stunning quality videos that Zeek makes !

Personally, I like very much the 1x3 anamorphic mode on my EOS-M.  When set at 1280x2160 resolution at 10 bits lossless I get continuous recording at 24 fps and nearly aliasing free video with excellent rendering finest detail.   The crop factor is just as much as to avoid the softness and imperfections at the edges of my lenses.

Here is a video that I shot this summer on the EOS-M using the above mode and settings:

https://cloud.mail.ru/public/x92j/VVXXaZdmV

To watch it in its highest quality, you have to download it from this link using the blue download button right above the video.  If you notice some softness on some of the clips, this is due to poor manual focusing on my part.   With manual vintage lenses focusing could be quite chalenging, especially at bright sun light.  Don't blame ocasional softness on the mode quality or the camera.

Good luck!

Glad it worked for you.  These slower cards are much cheaper than the 1066x ones.  You may also try the 16:9 ratio 4k resolution, (1280x2160).  To my taste it looks better without the black bars on the screen and also provides a more pleasing framing and composition.  You can still use card spanning if you need even wider angle of view and more resolution.  How did you like the fine detail rendering compared to your initial video?

As soon as I buy a faster CF and an SD and enable Card Spanning and 160Mhz I will try :) Thanks

This is not really necessary.  Also with your slow card you can have at least several seconds recording time, even without spanning.  This will be enough to make a comparison.  Alternatively, you can slightly decrease the resolution until you get continuous recording.

Try the anamorphic 1920x2340 mode at 10bits lossless and 24 fps and compare results with your footage above.  You will be very pleasantly surprised.

Some of ML team sees no problem to donations too including me, but some of ML team do see a problem . . can't make a clear choice to accept money donations here.

Bilal,

How about the second option - someone from Europe donating a used 100D and sending it to someone who travels to your country and would be willing to bring it over to you?  This would eliminate the problem with money donations, especially now that an application for fiscal hosting is still running.  Isn't this more realistic?

What I'm talking about is a privately organized "one-shot" (=time limited) fund where money ("real" currency only) is collected for a very specific and singular cause.
ML community had such actions in the past for various items.

Thanks for this clarification.  I was not aware of that.

This is a great idea. I am using my 100D at the moment, but I am willing to help fund to buy a used one.

Thanks a lot, Welles,

As far as I know, only bitcoin donations are accepted but I may be wrong:

Just formalities:
Formalities always exist.  However, if someone living in Europe, travels to the developer's country and brings the camera over as a personal item, wouldn't that be a perfectly legal solution?  We are talking about a cheap used camera for less than a couple of hundred Euro here and not a truck load of cameras.  Indeed, the forum member fund would be another working solution.

Hello all,

I guess, most of you are aware of the latest ML developments on the 700D/650D which our developer TheBilalFakhouri has turned into powerful raw video cameras thanks to his work based on the invalueable work and help of other lead developers:

https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25784.0

There is another camera that is almost identical to the above two models and also has the overclockable 41 MB/s SD-card interface but has not received an update for more than two years now.  This camera is the EOS 100D.  It is a pitty because the 100D is the lightest (400 g) and smallest DSLR ever made, is very powerful and is perfect for travel and gimbal work.  Personally, I also have the EOS-M which is even lighter.  However, when traveling, I much prefer the 100D since, apart from video, I also shoot a lot of stills and street photography and cannot live without the optical view finder, especially in bright sun shine.  Here is a recent video which reveals the excellent performamce of the 100D for filming low-light raw video:

https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=26245.msg236819;topicseen#msg236819

A while ago, I talked to Danne about a possible ML update and he was of the opinion that implementing the latest 700D/650D developments into the 100D should be fairly easy and should not take an experienced developer more than a few days of work.  Then I decided to talk to TheBilalFakhouri and he also confirmed that getting the 100D updated shouldn't be that hard.  He also said that he would be glad to do the work and add the 100D to his list of supported cameras, however, he must have a working 100D in his hands to complete the job successfully, (based on failed attempts to work on the 100D remotely).  Unfortunately, the 100D is not popular in his country and it can be impossible to lend (or get) one.  That is why, on behalf of those who still use the good old 100D, I am asking for help.

If there is someone on the forum who has a working 100D that he/she does not use any more and would be willing to donate to TheBilalFakhouri for the above update, please contact him with a personal message and he will suggest how to get the camera to him.  In my opinion, this would be the only way to breath new life into this fantastic camera.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Nice low-light footage, Welles.  It's a pitty that this fantastic compact camera does no longer receive ML support, otherwise it would have been as powerfull as the 700D and 650D with Bilal's latest builds.  The 100D is almost identical to the 700D/650D.

Would you share which build you were using and at what resolution did you film your clips?

Nice footage, 70MM13, but if you think that Resolve 17 does a better job than MLVApp, it would be appropriate to provide a few comparative examples - frame grabs from the same clip next to each other for visual comparison.  Also, please film a highly detailed wide angle scene and let us see how both algorithms debayer it - aliasing, finest detail, tone transitions, etc.

Magic Lantern is a too serious scientific project to be ignored by scientists.  Here is a recent example:

It is good to know that you can use MLV App sharpening to 90% without noticing artefacts for 1x3 footage. I agree with you that MLV App is actually good enough for 1x3 pp. No need for further software.

I do the postprocessing entirely in MLVApp and export to PR422LT.  These files are very light to play in Resolve Lite which I use just for cutting and editing.  In my experience this is the fastest and easiest pp workflow.  Works very well on my 7 years old laptop.  I am too lazy to use more complex and time consuming workflows.  This one yields quite satisfactory image quality too.

The phone is Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android OS on it, (I do not remember the exact version and dont have the phone here to check).  I will also need a OTG cable, I guess.

You can answer both questions on your own:
a) Connect camera HDMI to HDMI input of your monitor/TV set.
b) Connect capture card to phone and connect capture card to HDMI output.

If I could, I wouldn't be asking, right?  I am considering buying a capture card, adapters and cables but don't have them yet.  My purchase decision will depend on whether this is a working solution or not.  If anybody has some experience with that, I should appreciate some information.

Thanks a lot, Bilal.  This is very useful information, indeed.

Has anyone tried the HDMI output on a 1920x1080 capture card?  Does that work and how is image quality in the 1x3 crop modes?  I use these 1x3 modes all the time.  My idea is to use an old smart phone as external monitor via a capture card.  Will that work?

Mlrocks,

Did you try 1x3, AR 1,87, 1736x2928, 10 bit on the 650D?  On the EOS-M this preset provides continuous recording at 16 fps and the quality is fantastic!  I can use up to 90% sharpening in MLVApp without noticing any disturbing artefacts.   Perfect for wide angle landscape videography, even at 16 fps, as long as you don't move the camera too fast.

"I don't now how to do all the things on the EOS R without ML (f. e. Intervalometer, Motion detection, the modules). "

Just sell the EOS-R and get yourself the 5DMkIII for the money.  You won't regret !!!

Even if you get a few good results here and there in Mlv app eventually it'll break. More work needs to be done porting cr2hdr refinements imo or we need to face reoccuring issues around dualiso in movie files. Too bad really because with 1x3 binning dual iso is not that bad actually.

In fact, the results are excellent - very clean and with beautiful rich colors and a lot of detail!  This is because we've got plenty of vertical resolution.   Even aliasing and moire are pretty low.  I still don't undersdtand why "it will break eventually".  There must be a reason for that.  Is it a randomly occuring phenomenon?  Got to test it with the 100D too and see if I get flickering on that camera.

@IDA_ML: I agree that dualiso is great. But for the algorithm in MLVApp: it is proved to be wrong - I am a bit sad about that too. To get the mlv_dump algorithm into MLVApp is not impossible, but will need much much work because it is very different. If the MLVApp version works for you, it is luck - for many people it did not work and brings flickering, which does not show up when using mlv_dump.

Thank you for this clarification, Mask.  I still think that the current Dual ISO function should not be removed from MLVApp, even if there might be flickering in some cases.  Also, is there a specific version of MLV dump that works with Dual ISO?  If yes, could you please post a download link?  I will perform more tests and when I get flickering with MLVApp, I will see how it works with MLV dump.

And a final question.  Do you get flickering with your 5D3 when using Dual ISO?  I am asking because, watching these videos:

https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=26133.msg236318;topicseen#msg236318

also shot on the 5D3, I do not see any perceptible flickering.  Could the flickering issue be camera specific?

It is known, that DualISO doesn't work good in MLVApp. Just don't use it. We well disable it for the next version. Instead use mlv_dump.

Well, it works for me and does a hell of a job when filming high-contrast scenes where the sensor does not provide sufficient dynamic range.  I have not noticed any flickering or disturbing behavior of any kind so far.  The result is so much better compared to a normal MLV that I will continue using Dual ISO every time when appropriate.  See (below) for yourself'.

I have just performed a short test to see how Dual ISO works with the latest v. 1.13 of MLVApp.  I filmed a high-contrast scene with the 5D3 at the anamorphic 1392x2340/24fps/12bit lossless mode with 1) Dual ISO 100/3200 and 2) Normal MLV without Dual ISO for comparison.  Here is the H.265 444 result out of MLVApp, after a few very conservative adjustments:

https://we.tl/t-kqfXZeCiio

I have also included a 1-frame MLV from the original files.  The above link will be active for 7 days.

Masc,

Personally I think that Dual ISO is one of the most revolutionary developments of ML since it provides the most naturally looking result compared to other HDR techniques.  I also use it a lot with Dual ISO still RAW files.  It works extremely well in low light when using the full-resolution live view mode at low shutter speeds hand held when you don't carry a tripod.  Filming short MLV clips at that setting and shutter speeds as low as 1/4 s. allows you to select the sharpest frame out of 20-30 frames in the clip.  It would be a great mistake if in the next versions, MLVApp is deprived of this fantastic feature.  My suggestion is to leave Dual ISO as it is.  People can then decide by themselves if it works for them or not.
