i'm a little lost... how would linking a single file get mlvapp to read from two cards?  i was linking directories, not files.  am i missing the goal?

the exfat cards are always mounted while i am testing, and i am running the command prompt as admin.
#152
i began with that simple version, but when it failed i tried more extravagant means, but nothing got me past the exfat brick wall...

edit: i've made a bit of progress.  the ntfs error message was totally misleading.  the issue is with trying to merge the directories.  after doing some research i found that windows doesn't support it at all:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_mount

but i did find this:

https://github.com/derbylock/MergeFS

does this look like it can be compiled?
#153
i did the test some time back.  i tried again and even with links to links to links it still fails.  whether it is symlink commands alone, or "libraries" that use those symlinks, it says "local ntfs only"

:(
#154
unless my memory is incorrect, this option doesn't support exfat.

is there a way around that?
#155
probably not!  i haven't used a mac since i had one as the front end for my hard disc recorder in the studio back in the 1990s :P

but it made me think of the "libraries" idea and hopefully i will find another workaround, so your inspiration is most appreciated ;)
#156
it's absolutely worth the hassle.  dealing with an extra pile of storage space and the time associated with the extra copying of all these large files is rather severe.

unfortunately, windows "libraries" does not support removable media.  i wonder if there is a third party alternative that can do this.
#157
that is a great suggestion.  i'll test to see if this can work on windows using "libraries".

with danne's amazing new 3.5k mode, the need for constant use of card spanning is unavoidable now.  is there any chance of getting support for reading from both cards in mlv app?
copying all the source files into the same directory just to get started becomes a real problem in workflow.

thanks :)

i'm also running 1.1.3 and i did wipe the sd card before installing.

maybe you could try downloading again.  could it be a file error that wasn't caught?  all it takes is 1 bit...

i don't have any other suggestions so my fingers are crossed for you!

this is truly excellent!

there seems to be something indeed about the 3.5k mode that is extra stable.  i was recording at full 14 bits with a green indicator when exposed with very little clipping, and it stayed in the orange for a good 30 seconds before finally quitting when it was severely overexposed!

with overclocking and spanning of course :)

this feels like a new camera.  spectacular!  i really could have used this realtime preview during shooting earlier today!

i agree the extra vertical height is perfect.  sometimes 2.35:1 was just too short.  this is great!

hats off to you and bilal

there are two kinds of video shooters today (with regard to the topic of raw):
those who love the capabilities and nearly infinite flexibility of working with raw, and those who hate it and get headaches from it.

the limitations of working with log footage will always be inferior to raw for the first category of shooter.

in the end it probably hinges on one's primary motivation.  is it more about ease of use and/or quick turnaround time, or perhaps about achieving a desired (artistic) appearance/evocative effect?

the answer of course is entirely individual, so the chances are you already know for yourself :)

for me the quality of the pixels outweighs their number.

plus, i just love working with magic lantern.  after all these years it just feels like home.  i can't imagine a canon camera without it! ;)
#162
interesting!

if both card slots on the 5d3 share the same "IDE" bus, that perfectly explains the 131 MB/S "hard limit" on card-spanning recording!

nice!

and not so nice  :-\

sometimes the "vertical stripes" function in mlvapp can generate some strange side effects in dual iso footage.  you might want to check that...

if you are interested in how i am optimizing the preamps, look around on my youtube channel for the "how-to" videos.  there's a few.  i might do a new one for dual iso if anyone wants it.

here's a file with comparison dual iso DNG frames with default settings and with optimization:

and here's rawdigger info on them, done by timbytheriver:

i got gain reduction working with dual iso at last...

no noise reduction of any kind.  check out the dynamic range and clean shadows!

shot at TNT iso 100/1600

fun coincidence:  the old footage from my film that is interspersed was shot by me 10 years ago this month using magic lantern on my old 550d!
i originally produced this song back in 1989 and it was a nightclub hit around the world.  it was fun to redo it after all these years.

watch in 4k!

with the beautiful anamorphic mode giving such great results, i'm curious...

would it be possible to do it vertically also?  can it be just as "aliasing-free" vertically as it is horizontally?

the reason i'm asking is because i would love to be able to do some slow-motion with this quality.

i think everyone would benefit from this if it is achievable...

thanks!

shot at 3616*1536 14 bits, 23.976 fps using card spanning and sd overclock.

24mm T/1.5

i've gotta say, after doing the last few episodes of beyond zen using the anamorphic mode, i prefer it to 1:1 uhd!  anamorphic footage is a lot easier to work with in resolve for smooth playback.  i had to use proxies for this video...

i just wish it could do true 2.35:1 without sacrificing horizontal resolution.  oh well, maybe someday?

in the meantime, enjoy:
PS: the long solo performance at the end was live as it was going down.  that's the real take.  it's so sweet to have reliable long duration video recording thanks to the card spanning and overclock!

things have really come a long way!

the latest version works perfectly.  there's nothing to do except use it...  it keeps getting better with each version!

i don't think i can help you because i know nothing about 1.2.3

maybe someone else who uses it can offer advice.  my only advice is switch to 1.1.3 ;)
#168
i would, but there's nothing to show!

i'm using the defaults and simply turning on overclock and spanning.  the "official" current version of the sd overclock only has "on" and "off" settings.  (160mhz only)

it just works!

i don't know if this is a factor, but when i do 1:1 crop modes, i strictly use the UHD preset and i only use 2.35:1 aspect ratios (e.g. 3072*1308).

and i always kill global draw during recording.
#169
i use both the kb 128 and 256 cards for my video recordings, and after many full card write cycles over the years, both are still working flawlessly, making 20 minutes+ recordings that are often <>100GB.

while it's clear that some have had bad luck with these cards, i can thankfully say my experience has been perfect.  if they failed today i would not complain.  they both work flawlessly with card spanning and sd overclock on the 5d3 (sandisk extreme pro 170)

PS: i forgot to mention that i also use official canon batteries AND cheap knock-offs, and it has never happened here.  always <>130 MB/S with card spanning and overclock.

hope that helps!

check out this guy's CF thermal throttling information.  i wonder if it also applies to SD cards.

could it be the reason for the slowdowns?

hi everyone,
i'm having a lot of fun with the 5.7k mode, in fact i love it!
i'm wondering if there's a way to increase the vertical resolution to capture 2.35:1 without reducing the horizontal resolution?
with spanning and overclock there is plenty of headroom but i just can't find a way to get that little bit more vertical capture...
thanks!
#173
very nice!

it's amazing how quickly things can change...  after seeing so many demonstration videos of the new cameras with their autofocus, suddenly it feels like a "must have" feature, but a month ago i wouldn't have even considered it!
#174
i have a suspicion that my 5d3 was potentially damaged by playing rather aggressively with sd overclocking.  behaviour with a few cards all changed at once after a single failure.

luckily, it is working (so far, having done several hours of recording since) at 160mhz with the sandisk extreme pro 170, but each time i hit record i wonder if it will fail.

i am not complaining, and i am happy to help in my small way.  it may simply be a coincidence that 3 cards all changed their behaviour at the same time (although i was only using one of them at the time of the failure), but time will tell.

of course, as always, a1ex is right.  everyone should be well informed that this is risky!

but i am very happy to take the risk!  this has made the 5d3 a monster video camera!!

thanks to the efforts of so many passionate people! :)

here's a different angle on the 5d4 question:

other than the slightly better sensor, what are the other (if any) advantages it has over the 5d3, especially for video?

does anyone have hard specs on the card slots, for example?
how about the sensor read rate?

etc...

with danne's wonderful work on the 5d3, it feels "finished"!
maybe it's time for a real pragmatic look at just how much better the 5d4 is.
