thank you for the kind words, a very rare experience for me on this forum...

i think the main issue with people is apathy.  they simply don't realize that the actions of individuals DO count.

you don't have to be a crazy retired music producer with your own forest to do significant things, although it is a great experience to live here and witness the beauty and intricate balance of nature as well as the results of my efforts.

the destruction of habitat for industrial farming is rampant here also.  one thing nobody mentions is that the vast majority of factory farmland and gmo crops are for animal feed.

it's great that you mentioned the bees and insects.  something happened here recently where the farmer beside my forest sprayed his field with glyphosate in september, a field that was growing fallow for the year to recover from 5 years of growing toxic ginseng.  the field was packed full of wildflowers when he sprayed, and it wiped out ALL of the butterflies and 95% of the bees.

i made an episode of one of my video series about it, and a trilogy of songs, the first of which was a collaboration with timbytheriver!

please share it with your friends who understand and maybe they can share it too...  the word needs to spread!

wow, that is really great!
those are some nice mushrooms...  it reminds me of when i visited back home in 1980 in the mountains of yugoslavia...

thanks for the beautiful video.

it's amazing what that little camera can do in the right hands ;)

thanks ida :)

i do everything myself.  i wish i had a production partner!  only one camera, and since i'm in the studio recording the parts, i just film myself performing.  i don't do any remote start/stop, i just record everything and trim in mlvapp while exporting the dng sequences.

timbytheriver turned me onto a nice pair of plugins by the bald avenger for resolve, and i'm over the moon with how great they are! "film grade" and "soft clip".

i used them on the latest ttt episode.  "grading" was almost effortless and i love how it turned out!

@christian, i'm sorry i don't know.  i only shoot at 23.976 or 18fps.  try it and let us know!

is there anyone out there who is willing/able to port the mlv_dump code to mlv app?
#131
that's great!  no flickering :)

i wish i had used such steps back when i did this footage.  i had used barracudaGUI and obviously something doesn't work there.  also mlvapp was/is the same.  i just tried it again with the latest version and it still flickers.

maybe they could look at your procedure and make sure they are doing it properly...

it's a shame i no longer have the source for that video.  i would reprocess it using your steps!

BTW: in this scene the camera is tilting from the forest floor to the sky.  it gets a LOT brighter :P

thanks for the info, hopefully it gets put to use!

the original mlv is long gone, so i cannot say for certain about any bit depth reduction on that file, but i gave dual iso another shot 2 months ago in one of my music videos and the problem was still there, and it was definitely 14 bit.  in this scene, i'm playing a synth in the studio, and the reflective highlights on the control knobs make the image flicker when i move around and block the reflections...

in another shot, pulsing LEDs on a synth made the image flicker.

it's not difficult to reproduce this issue.  just have a scene with wide dynamic range and a single light source (the kind you would be using dual iso to capture!) and see how the image changes when you block the light.

walking in front of a light bulb would work.

the attachment i provided in the original issue reported (and linked above by sm105) is still valid...

i'm only responding now, so late, because someone else made reference to this thread recently:

the scene was not underexposed.

this is only a portion of a motion picture scene, one in which the lighting changes, as is apt to happen in MOTION pictures.

it was indeed exposed to the right, for a different part of the same scene not included in the tiny attachment.

the flickering issue persists to this day and it is not a corner case.  it happens whenever there is changing light during a scene that crosses the line between the two exposures.

it remains a showstopper for dual iso in real cinematic use.

LOL!
it's a good thing i was finished my drink before i opened your thread... i would have done a spit take when i laughed!

thanks for the laugh ;)

the race to the bottom...

when i was grading/editing this video in resolve, i ran into a nasty bug...

my 5d3 has a stuck pixel, almost dead centre of the sensor (of course!) and i always take care of it with the "dead pixel fixer" plugin in resolve.  the plugin stopped working when i loaded this footage, and i went looking online for any hints as to what was wrong.  luckily, the search was good, and i found it happens when there is resizing at the "clip" level, which is what i was doing.

so i disabled the resizing, and changed the project settings to the exact desired output resolution (in this case 3840x1584), with "mismatched resolution files" resizing set to "stretch to all corners":

i set the timeline to match.

when rendering, set the resolution to 3840x2160 and ignore the warning.  it will then add the black bars to the render.

the plugin worked again, and as a bonus, playback was much smoother - realtime, in fact!

hope it helps someone...

@paulheran:  if you are on windows, you can use my script to read directly from your two cards into mlvapp.

https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25385.msg231554;topicseen#msg231554
#139
this is required for windows mlvapp users to read off both SD and CF card for spanned files.
#140
this was originally posted in the mlvapp thread, but i just noticed a new user who didn't know about this, so it seems like a good idea for it to have a separate thread for easy discovery:

i wrote a very simple batch file for other windows users to use:  (input it as a text file and then save as filename.BAT)
right click on the icon and choose "run as administrator"

Code: [Select]

@echo on

SET SrcRoot1=L:\DCIM\100EOS5D
SET SrcRoot2=S:\DCIM\100EOS5D
SET TargetRoot=A:\MLVSDCF

FOR %%A IN ("%SrcRoot1%\*") DO (MKLINK "%TargetRoot%\%%~NXA" "%%~A")

FOR %%A IN ("%SrcRoot2%\*") DO (MKLINK "%TargetRoot%\%%~NXA" "%%~A")

PAUSE
EXIT

it's obviously set for my paths, so adjust to your specific settings.  make sure to create the destination directory before running the batch!

i'm using a ramdisk as drive A, which is a convenient place to stick random junk like a pile of shortcuts for a single use :)

NOTE: the destination directory must be formatted with NTFS

Share Your Videos / new music project from TNT
September 28, 2020, 07:01:36 PM
shot on both sides of the atlantic, using TNT of course ;)

it only made sense to call our music project TNT also! :)

magic lantern brought us together to hack our cameras and make music too!

the song was inspired by the sudden catastrophic loss of all the butterflies in my forest after the farmer next door poisoned his fallow field in late summer.  i'm playing my keyboard on the boundary between my forest and his field.

thanks!
i wonder what the maximum resolution possible would be at 18fps...  with overclocking and card spanning, we should be able to go pretty high!

Share Your Videos / nature video - 5d3 3.5k 18FPS

i sometimes use 18fps when i want a different cadence, and i find it suits this kind of video.

maxed out resolution @ 2:1 AR, recording strictly to CF, 14 bit:

there's definitely extra efficiency in danne's 3.x k modes.

@volumetrik
thanks for the tip.  going fast with the interface makes sense.  i am using muscle memory and i don't go slow with operations!

hopefully it gets sorted out.  being stuck in x10 zoom isn't always obvious in the forest, and when i play it back it can reveal a need for a retake ;)
#145
thanks!

regarding the framing, it generally works reliably with the sides cropped off in the liveview.  when recording, it zooms in more, but it is perfectly smooth and it's great for focusing ;)

occasionally, however, the liveview is zoomed in all the time.  i ran into that with the first take on this recording.  i had to restart the camera after trying random tinkering, but nothing fixed it until restarting the camera.

i haven't tested it yet but i'm wondering if it might be related to which video mode is selected when starting the camera?

Share Your Videos / nature video - 5d3 3.5k 5x zoom mode
September 17, 2020, 01:44:38 PM
there's definitely something magical happening with danne's new 3.5k 5x zoom mode.

i was feeling lazy so i shot this episode on my CF card only, at approximately 2500*1250 (2:1 AR) @ 23.976, 14 bit

and it was as solid as a rock.  no stops with several 10-15 minute takes!

the new realtime preview is a joy to work with.

there's some serious magic in magic lantern these days...

the same... i was overcompensating for the failure of "libraries".
i just checked and it works without them, so another slim down!

thanks :)
#148
i specifically created hard links to ensure that mlvapp will recognize the files from both cards.

my initial test using "libraries" failed.  mlvapp didn't "see" the m00 files.
i took it to mean that soft links are insufficient for mlvapp, so i just went straight for hard links in the script.

but with your question, i went back and changed the script to soft links and it still works.

so i can't say why "libraries" don't work, and i suppose at this point i don't care ;)

thanks for the suggestion!

i will revise the code in the message to be soft links to avoid potential confusion by putting up a new version...

#149
resolve does 18fps timelines so that would be a great choice!  i use it sometimes instead of 23.976 and it is really nice.
#150
thanks for the help!  i got it working!

tested with mlvapp and it worked!!

i hope it comes in handy for other magic lantern users as well :)
