Walter I'm sorry for not replying so soon. I was away from my computer the past few days.

Yep, global draw is off.

As for the file sizes, I recorded 4 times and got these numbers:
1. 44 seconds, 97.8MB/s write, 14ms idle, and 4.68GB size
2. 48 seconds, 98.1MB/s write, 10ms idle, and 5.15GB size
3. 47 seconds, 98.1MB/s write, 7ms idle, and 4.99GB size
4. 47 seconds, 98.1MB/s write, 7ms idle, and 5.01GB size

Here are some screenshots from my 5D. Hopefully they might give us insight was to why this is happening. (Wanted to insert the pictures directly, but they were too large so I had to use the URL instead.

So in mlv_rec, global draw is indeed off and U do have the exFat 4GB override enabled (and yes, I formatted the card in exFat prior to testing). Despite this, mlv_rec will get me 20 seconds of recording time while raw_rec will get me about 40 seconds.

So I downgraded from 1.2.3 to 1.1.3. I ran the benchmark (while in video mode) in the playback menu and averaged about 119MB/s of write speed and 154MB/s of read speed. For a while, I was actually able to record at 1080p RAW; even the 103.4MB/s text was green. Now however, I can't record for more than 46 seconds and the text is back to yellow and red.

1920 * 1080 * 30fps * 14bits / 8 = 103 MB

95 is less than 103. That is your problem.

No I understand that, I'm just trying to discern if it's the card's fault for not writing fast enough (which is odd since I using a 1066x KB CF card and a 160MB/s Sandisk CF card) or that my 5D can't write at that speed.

Sorry if this is a redundant question, but has anyone actually gotten 1080 30fps RAW working on their 5D M3? I'm having trouble with it and I have all the hardware (including a 64GB KB CF 1066x card). The 5D can record RAW at 24fps with no issue (it writes with a speed of 95MB/s) but once I bump it to 30fps, it won't record longer than 12-40 seconds (even though the right speed is around 93-95MB/s).

Hi,

Feel sorry about your probs with the camera.

I'am using a Nightly build from 23 May 2014 with the 5D3. Just found out that I only get 7 seconds at 1080p 30fps with sound, not very good, but not bad either. As I really like the look of 24p it's fine for me, I got continus recording at 24p 1080p with sound. Using a 128gb Lexar 1066x card. Reviewing the footage afterwards isn't anything that I have to do, I'am pretty happy with just recording and not looking at it in camera afterwards. I wouldn't expect better performence when reviewing footage than what you have right now.

Is your 30fps footage with sound? I guess so but otherwise you could interpret it as 25p or 24p? And shoot 24p with your 5D3.

As far as I can tell, I'm getting no sound when I view the footage in mlv-play. I actually don't know how to adjust the volume in mlv-play because the shutter wheel doesn't do anything when I spin it.

So I guess the only solution is to stick to 24p when recording RAW or use full 1080p. Bummer. Thanks for your suggestions!

Cam's DiGIC processor does not provide enough computing power for realtime viewing RAW/MLV.

Ah thank you!

So I got the card today and I've been running a few tests on it:

  • The camera benchmark for the Komputerbay 1066x 64GB CF card was 86.6MB/s Write and 115.5MB/s Write. I got the same numbers for exFat as well.
  • I tried to benchmark the CF card with ML installed on my Sandisk SD card, but it kept defaulting to the SD card so I was unable to determine the R/W speeds in this scenario.
  • While recording at 1080p 24fps ALL-I in Canon and 1044p RAW in raw_rec, the 5D was writing at a speed of 95MB/s which was green. However, when recording at 1080p 30fps in Canon and 1044p Raw in raw_rec, the 5D was writing at about 93-94MB/s and it was yellow. (This was done having the CF card in exFat and having ML on my SD card.)
  • Despite this, I was able to record RAW video for over a minute (I stopped recording myself after 1:30 minutes) when recording at 1080p 30fps in Canon and 1044p Raw in raw_rec. With global draw on, video stopped after 45 seconds.
  • While using mlv_play to view the footage, video is really jerky. (Is this because .RAW is just a series of still frames?)
  • For the raw_rec settings, I just followed what DeafEyeJedi posted.

This is just really frustrating because I think I'm doing everything right, but for some reason I'm not getting the desired or proper results.

If anyone else has suggestions or questions about my setup, please feel free to ask because if I get all of this working, that'll make Magic Lantern worth the hassle.

Hope it solves the problem! Strange that the Sanddisk 160mb/s doesn't do the trick. I use several Lexar 1066X cards at 1080p, usually at 1080p 23,976fps though. I really like the look of 23,976fps.

I hope so too. The card comes in tomorrow so if it works, I'll just send back the Sandisk and use the money to order another one.

24p is solid so I have no complaints. I'm just not used to shooting at 24p and all the footage that I want to pair with my 5D is 30p so that's why I'm so persistent on getting this to work. Also because Magic Lantern is permanent, I might as well make it worth my while.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that. Don't use a slow SD card though. If for some reason your setting get switched around and the camera attempts to write raw video to the SD card it will take a while, several seconds, before the camera errors out. You'll think the camera crashed. A faster SD card will get you out of the jammed state quicker.

On those screen shots MLV shows a green OK and the original RAW shows yellow OK. Yellow usually means caution--you are living on the edge.

On a side note--I won't be seeing The Force Awakens until Dec. 30. I'm in the film industry and there are lots of free screenings, this one is at the Director's Guild and will be in 3D. Most of the screenings filled up quickly. One at the Academy on Friday night with a J.J. Abrams Q&A following the screening filled up in just a few minutes. And now back to your regularly scheduled Magic Lantern discussion.

My SD cards usually are either 90-95Mbps Sandisk Extreme Pro cards ranging from 16GB to 32GB. (My 32GB 95Mbps Extreme Pro is the one I've been keeping in my camera since I left all my SD cards in Florida when I came home for winter break.) I have ML set to boot off of my CF card since my original intent was to use CF to record RAW video and my SD card to take pictures. I thought that ML would just boot off of the CF card when it was inserted but I later found out that ML installs a bootflag so it pretty much made my whole "boot from CF card" plan null.

Anything under 1728x972 is green while anything above is yellow. Quite depressing.

EDIT: Actually, 1792x1008 is the new resolution.

Wow, sounds like you're living the life hahah. I probably won't get to see it until maybe mid January and that's if I try hard enough.

Here's what you can do achieve continuous recording for 30fps on 5D3 113 w a KB 128GB 1066x CF card...

As Walter pointed earlier that it is best to enable CF cards into exFAT (can be done via Disk Utility in Mac) and yes I am a Sandisk guy myself as well but as of lately I have been happy with KB 128GB 1066x (it's the speed 1066x that seem to be the 'sweet spot' for 5D3) and it is also recommended to use SD card for ML and record onto CF card seperately for best performance.

Yes, I know it isn't quite exactly full HD but hey remember 1856x1044 in MLV RAW beats 1920x1080 H264 by lightyears.

Jm2c.

I'm just casually sitting here foaming at the mouth debating on whether or not I should just return my Sandisk card for the KB card instead. But...but...my card is 1067x.

1.1.3 vs. 1.2.3: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=14704.msg142089#msg142089

EDIT: You may try ExFAT on your card.
- Format card using cardreader. Select ExFAT
- Use EOScard/MacBoot to make card bootable.
- Wipe all content from card. But *don't* format card!
- Copy extracted nightly build contents to card.
- Insert card into cam and startup.

Caveat: If you format card in cam file system will be converted to FAT32.

So I don't want to downgrade just yet until we can figure out exactly what the problem is. (I'm really just afraid of bricking the 5D if I keep downgrading.)

I did however reformat my CF card to exFat and I ran the benchmark: 86.7Mbps Write and 117.4Mbps Read: So definitely an improvement over FAT32.

I tried to record 1080p RAW from ML's menu and 1080p 30fps ALL-I from Canon's menu and got around to 25s which is better than before. I tried shooting 1080p RAW in the ML menu but this time chose 1080p IPB and got around 24s. All-in-all, ML is telling me that the average write speed during recording was 93-95Mbps. I guess the card isn't having it.

Interestingly enough, 1792x1008 is now the highest resolution in the green zone. I think I can push for 1856x1044.

I would think that the SanDisk card you have should work. Haven't tried 30fps and am away from camera (but not AFK) until the weekend so I can't test it out. Have you tried mlv_rec instead of raw_rec? What firmware are you running? I'm on 1.1.3 because I heard of issues with 1.2.3 and 1.3.3 is rather experimental. Also, global draw off? Tried playing with other settings? How about resetting to default settings, both Canon and ML and only load one module at a time?

Yeah I thought so as well! Apparently not. Even at 30fps, my 5D will stop recording about 10 seconds in. 24p is fine with ALL-I and IPB which really boggles my mind. I would be fine with using 24p but I'm not looking to shoot 24fps since I generally shoot in 30fps.

I was going to try mlv_rec but the description said something about exporting metadata along with the footage which I didn't want to deal with in post since I'm not proficient with using metadata in my workflow. raw_rec was more streamlined for my liking. I'll see have a look though.

I turned global draw off and it still stops after 10 seconds. It said I was recording at 87MB/s and I assume the 5D or CF card didn't like that. I'm able to record normally without raw_rec enabled so that's good.

I'm running ML 1.2.3. I heard 1.1.3 was stable but i wanted to try the latest nightly build because I assumed a lot of the problems in 1.1.3 would've been addressed. Should I downgrade? I should note that my 5D was initially at 1.3.3 had to downgrade once to use 1.2.3.

Do you think downgrading to 1.1.3 would fix it? If I do, what major features would I missing? I got ML solely for the videographer tools (mainly focus assisting and RAW) and the bulb-ramping (timelapse) features in photo mode. I know that bulb-ramping was replaced with AETTR but did that happen in 1.2.3?

Komputerbay with a "K"

I'm a SanDisk guy myself but when it came to buying a few cards for a 5D3 raw video shoot I compared prices and user's comments and went with the KB CF cards.

Komputerbay's reputation is kind of like that Errol Morris documentary, "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control. " Their QC has seemed to improve over the years.

Dfort: No you're right, I noticed I misspelled it after I posted. I'm just weary as to why a KB CF would work as opposed to a SD CF considering the SD has a higher read/write speed. Is it they way they're built or just a lot of people use them for RAW recording?

I've also done more digging and it appears the 5D is a hit/miss when recording RAW. 24p generally tends to be stable on all if not most of the cameras running ML, but only a handful of people got their 5Ds to record at 30p. Again, most of these people are using KB CF cards so maybe i should make the switch...

As for the benchmark results, my 5D averages 79.4MB/s Write and 107.5 Read on the SD card.

KB 128GB 1066x works well on 5D3.

DeafEyeJedi: See I saw a lot of people in the ML community using these cards, but I got the Sandisk card since I've been using their stuff since I started out in DSLR photography and videography. Would that do the trick? I'm running the benchmark now as Budafilms suggested so I'll add in the image once it's completed.

On a side note, have you seen The Force Awakens? I'm trying to get tickets but it's tough in my town.

It's normal the INI problem in this build.

The speed of the card is not the speed to write of the camera.

You can test your card in ML menu and compare with the thread if is working fine.

In my experience I use ComputarBay 1000X, never a problem.

Budafilms: Thanks for your reply. As you suggested, I'm running the card benchmark right now. I'll add it into this thread once it finishes. I also did some testing yesterday and found that I can film at 1080p ALL-I and IPB RAW if I shoot at 24fps, not 30fps. Still, I don't generally shoot at 24fps since my workflow is 30fps.

As I asked, DeafEyeJedi, would a CB CF work as opposed to my Sandisk? What makes it so special since my Sandisk card has a higher read/write speed, 1067x I believe it is.

Raw Video / Raw Recording Stops on 5D M3
December 16, 2015, 12:16:54 AM
Hello all!

I've had Magic Lantern for about a few weeks now and I've been having problems with getting the raw_rec module to work.

While recording in 1920x1080 ALL-I and IPB under the Canon menu and 1920x1080 16:9 in the Raw_Rec menu, I only get about a few seconds (12-30s) on average for clip until my 5D stops recording.

If I drop the resolution in the ML menu to 720p, the problem goes away and the recording timer is green as opposed to red.

I've been Googling for a few hours and the closest thing I found was this: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10335.0. The solution was to simply record at a lower resolution which doesn't seem right.

The issue is probably a read & write speed problem, but I'm using a Sandisk 32GB Extreme Pro CF Card (160Mbps). There's no other card in the 5D and I have the 5D set to record/write to the CF card if I do insert an SD card.

It's weird because the yellow text I get says 103.6MB/s at 29.970p, and 160Mbps is definitely higher than that. The highest resolution I can go to is 1728x972 and there it reads 83.9MB/s.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate all the help I can get!

(On a side note, if I try to run H264.ini, I get an error saying that it can't be found. Is that normal?)
