Hey Brawl,

You're welcome! I'm so glad you feel better now, I was hoping so  :)

Oh, and I found out Dual Iso Video isn't yet available for the 7D. I thought it was, but it could be available some day.

But, you can create noise profiles in Neat Video with different ISOs. You can use their target sheets to print out, or film for a few seconds on white poster board while slightly out of focus. Make sure to take pictures of all your settings. Then you can apply these noise profiles and you won't have any issues creating profiles for each clip! Pretty cool, huh?

I figured I would add as much description for these videos as I could to give you some ideas and reassurance. The equipment isn't really important, I just wanted to tell you to give you information on how the shots were done. I definitely recommend primes for raw video and h.264 if you can. Zooms come in handy for freelance work / one man band / run and gun. But primes are sharp. Also have better minimum focusing distances.

There are more videos I've shot in raw on the 7D:

Tornado Strikes Wenonah (2015)

Fireworks in Vineland, NJ (July 2016) - Timelapse - Photos

Sunrise in Ocean City, NJ (July 2016) - Time-lapse - Photos

Hey Brawl,

Coming from a T3i, I chose to add a 7D in July of 2015. Why? Because of raw video continuous recording 1728x972 16:9 23.976 fps. But I found out there are so many other features available via Magic Lantern.

I also purchased a VAF-7D filter soon after. This filter is amazing, and provides the ability to sharpen H.264 footage without adding artifacts. I absolutely love the 7D. It shoots raw photos of 5K resolution, shoots H.264 video, and shoots Raw Video.

I'm looking into Dual Iso, DotTune, and more time-lapse features provided by Magic Lantern as well.

The onboard mic thanks to Magic Lantern is great for scratch audio, with the removal of AGC and analog gain capabilities.

With the VAF-7D, I have been able to shoot video free of Aliasing and Moire, without losing sharpness.

You will need to make sure shots are in focus because of the filter changing the focusing distance. So you cannot rely on the focus measurements on lenses. You won't be able to zoom and keep focus on parfocal lenses.

But so what? This camera feels flawless with this filter, and sometimes I don't use the filter when also shooting photography. And the quality of raw video still looks amazing!

And you can even take pictures with the filter on, if need be in a pinch, through Liveview. That is so cool!

I definitely would recommend not shooting 3x crop mode however with the filter because of some image degradation. But the 1728 x 736 (2:35:1 aspect ratio) scales great to 1920 x 817, and upscaling to 4096 x 1743 via Adobe Media Encoder 4K for Youtube and Vimeo it looks fantastic.

There is also a bug in the 7D where you can shoot 48 fps Raw for about 15 seconds no sound, and 13 seconds with sound. That's right 48 fps override with correct sound, and you don't have to unsqueeze the footage in post production. I love this ability, and there is currently no other Canon DSLR with Magic Lantern that has this capability (that I know of).

You can calibrate your lenses for photography using Dot Tune (I have to look more into this), or a Spyder Calibration Target.

You can use a shutter release with cable and trigger the 7D (and other Canon DSLRs with Magic Lantern) to record, both H.264 and Raw, when enabling record with pressing the half shutter button. And you don't need batteries to just trigger the shutter! This is especially useful for using a shoulder rig.

You can use an audio recorder like a Zoom H6, with a 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male and record audio straight from the H6 to the 7D. Although wav files are better, if you don't have time, you can always use the audio recording in the h.264 file. This records wav into the H6 and the audio into the MOV file at the same time!

You will have no overheating issues if you use a battery grip or a Lanparte E6 dummy battery and battery attachment. This lasts the amount of 4 LPE6 batteries! I haven't noticed overheating when just shooting with one battery, but I've seen it happen once on a shoot.

Dual Iso retains up to 14 stops of the Sensor, great for Real Estate Videos.

The 7D is close to the equivalent of a Super 35mm camera, which is industry standard.

I could go on and on on how I love the Canon 7D. It is a fantastic camera, and if you plan on doing as work I think you've made an excellent choice. The ability to color grade 14 bit color raw footage for $600 or under is amazing. I'm so thankful.

If you are looking for 128 GB 1066x Lexar CF cards, try Lens Authority. They have cosmetically damaged cards that function flawlessly, which is all I care about. I recently purchased 2 cards for $128. That's almost the price of 1 new card! Definitely use 1066x, the Sandisk 85 mb/sec cards can give a dropped frame or two after a while of shooting. No slow motion capabilities either.

There are a few softwares I recommend...

1. Cinelog-C (although I used to use Visionlog, I highly recommend not using it now) Visiontech is amazing for H.264 video though. I love this picture style.
2. FilmConvert. Not only a film grain emulator, this serves well for color grading
3. Neat Video along with downloading 7D Noise Profiles from Neat Video's website (I do not recommend Red Giant Denoiser - way too slow and CPU/GPU intensive and disappointing results). I like to remove any digital noise and add grain from Filmconvert.
4. 5D to RGB Batch for transcoding H.264 clips. This helps with color grading and preserves the image when grading.

If you have any questions please let me know. I don't want you to be bummed about such an awesome camera!

Ok I understand. Is this in H.264, Raw Video, or both? Red pixels usually go away in Raw video with Adobe Camera Raw. I have two pixels that aren't red that I haven't been able to get rid of, though I haven't tried options in MLVFS. Also, you can try this to improve the issue in post production: https://youtu.be/_YYhSWLGu6U

Hey Olivant,

If you're looking for cheap Lexar 128 gb CF cards, check Lens Authority. Cosmetics aren't ggreat, but cards function flawlessly. Bought two cards for $128.00

Hey hyalinejim,

I believe I purchased Cinelog right before the update, so I might have Version 3. I'll have to try it! I'm all about footage being able to handle stress tests, thus why I use 5D to RGB.

Hey FernandoYP689 and DavidSh,

Although I highly recommend Andy600's Cinelog-C profile, I used to use Visionlog. These are the only files I have, but should work. You can download via Google Drive with this link https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bz5n0qYxIkVONy03YWlMSFA5NUU?usp=sharing

Hope this helps, and happy editing!

Hey sorry to double post, but I was able to export dngs from a few recovered clips from the disk image I made of the CF card, but all the frames were black. I wasn't able to get MLVFS to recognize it, but mlrawviewer was able to export dngs and a ProRes 4444.MOV file. I am curious how to get those mlvs to work with MLVFS though, in case this happens again. The file that wouldn't play was M14-0725.MLV, and I recovered the same file, but it still wouldn't play. It was recovered as: f63726490.mlv, and they both have 608 bytes. The other files that play in mlrawviewer have black frames, and are 992 bytes. Most mlv files recovered wouldn't even open in mlrawviewer. The M14-0725.MLV file would open in mlrawviewer, but wouldn't play/had no frames.

Hey a1ex and g3gg0,

I couldn't figure out how to run Python and the rawcover.py script. I can't figure out how to download the script, all I could do was save as rawcover.py. I downloaded Python 2.7.12 I have already tried the disk image of the CF card and was able to recover the clip, and there were 818 frames, but I couldn't extract any dngs from it. I really tried to understand rawcover and Python and looked on the internet and on the Magic Lantern Forum, and found this: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10136.0 but it's all a bit over my head. I'm on a Mac, maybe someone could explain what to type in the Terminal... It seems like Python takes a while to understand as well... Thanks for all your help!

Hey user0597,

Thank you so much for your responses. I appreciate your help. I've looked at healthy .MLV files which have NULL and VIDF, but these files that won't play don't even have NULL or VIDF in them. If you take a look at this forum post: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=14980.0 This is the exact problem I have. Thankfully the plane flying across the moon was not in the clip that failed to record. I thought it was, sorry for the carelessness. And the Guitar MLV file that failed to record had no sound any way, so I guess it's okay I don't have that clip. I know this happened once because my battery died mid-recording, and when shooting the moon I'm not sure why. I was having battery issues previously that night so maybe that was it. It could be the card. I'll have to record some clips to see if I can replicate the issue, if not, then the card and camera is fine. Also, I ran Photorec on the CF card (hadn't formatted it yet, so make a disk image first, then ran PhotoRec), an application for recovering data, and recovered the Moon MLV, but it didn't show anything in the clip when played on MLVRawviewer, and I couldn't get MLVFS to extract DNGs from it. Also, I found some files via Photorec that said if found, please report here. I know it said the recording failed because of battery drainage or something. I'll make sure to go through those files and upload to Google Drive for Magic Lantern to take a look at. I wonder if I keep my batteries in a plastic bag in my camera bag that they wouldn't drain before shooting with this cold weather... Thanks for all the help everyone, and if anyone has any more input please share. Thanks.

Hey moustikseb,

Can you try a different monitor, like maybe a tv? Also a different memory card with ML on it, and try resetting the Lilliput's settings. Maybe try reinstalling Magic Lantern, or setting Magic Lantern settings to default.

Hey user0597,

Thank you so much for providing this guide. I'm having trouble figuring out Hex Key, since my files are a bit different. Is there any way you could take a look at the files and try hex key? And if you figure it out, could you provide screenshots so I know how to do it next time? Here is a link via Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bz5n0qYxIkVORDEweW1ianRrdHc?usp=sharing

If anyone wants to take a stab at this, I would greatly appreciate it. I would love to get these two files recovered. Any other suggestions are welcomed as well.

Hey moustikseb,

Try setting the monitor to automatic aspect ratio, and I think the T3i has an automatic aspect ratio for monitoring through hdmi. In advanced settings, you can try 16:9, 16:10, and others. This should work. Also try turning on your monitor first, then the T3i. Please report back if this worked or helped. I'll be glad to further assist.

Hey reddeercity,

Just wanted to let you know that this happened again tonight while shooting the moon. The clip which I filmed a plane flying across the moon won't play in MLVRawviewer, and it's the same problem with chunks and file sizes as the last clip. Is there something wrong with my camera or CF card? I did get an error 70 once tonight, batteries kept dying. But when I shot this clip the battery didn't did midway... Sorry for the hassle, I just want to figure out to get these files to open. Lol.

Hey reddeercity,

Thank you so much for looking at the files on Google Drive. I have 35.28 GB on my hard drive from the card, but there were some pictures I went through. Is there a way I can tell, by looking at the files? If you need me to upload to Google Drive, I can. I appreciate all of your help.

Hey reddeercity,

Thanks so much for your helpful response! Is there a program like this for Mac? If not, I can try doing this on a friend's pc when he's free. Would be neat to be able to do on a Mac if something like this happens again. Thanks again!

Hello ML Community,

I was shooting raw video on my 7D a few months back, and during recording a long file my battery died.

I cannot open the file, and don't have much experience with MLV_Dump. I have read a forum post about this issue and MLV_Dump possibly figuring out what the problem is with the file:

Hello ML Community,

As regards to the 7D 48.033 fps no squeezing bug, here is a link via Google Drive with clips that have sound working, water pouring for testing in your editing applications, and screenshots of how to export properly via SmartImport2 Script in After Effects. For 1728 x 692, in SmartImport2 it is necessary when resizing to keep the width at 100%, but the height at 60%

Hello djb102,

I know on my Macbook Pro I sometimes have an issue where I keep getting asked to provide my password. Is there any way you can right click the CF card in Windows, click Get info, and make it so you have permission to write to the card? The only other possible thing I could think of is the CF card is only readable, not writeable. My friend had an SD card that he had to use scotch tape in order to get the card read. This is rare, but maybe you purchased a card that cannot be modified? Anyways, post here your results so I can help you further. I hope this helps.
