Hey limey,

Ok cool sounds good. I think you'll be really happy with desqueezing the footage. Let me know if you have any trouble, I'll be glad to help.

I would honestly use a Gray Card or Cheap version of an Expo Disc for White Balance Consistency. Also, you can set 5600K in daylight, then dial down or up the Kelvin as seen by eye. Indoors, you can set to 3200K, and dial up or down as needed. Here is a link to the cheap, but just as good version of the Expo Disc. I think it will really help you out with Custom White Balance in Magic Lantern settings, not Canon.

Expo Disc: https://www.amazon.com/Ezfoto-Balance-Filter-Olympus-Panasonic/dp/B005MWKKPG/ref=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1379810060&sr=1-17&keywords=white+card+for+photography

Gray Card: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HT9MA1W/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HT9MA1W&linkCode=as2&tag=techfdinne-20&linkId=LD7INSRMTD75AYVI

You can also use a white piece of paper, or a grey paint card from Home Depot.

Hope this helps you out, and please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

     Hello D_Odell,

Is there another remote you can try to clarify it's a ML issue? Also, what DSLR are you using, the 7D? I would try formatting the card and ML, then reinstall. Make sure you have half shutter button enabled. You can try resetting ML settings to default first if you'd like. If all else fails, you can purchase a shutter release online for cheap, and it works flawlessly even without batteries! Please post here to let me know how this went, and if I can be of any further help.

Hey limey,

It should work, with just scaling the height to around 1.6. I would try to use the original project, and not re-exporting from the original video uploaded, since quality will be lost.

Hey limey,

I understand, editing can get confusing with so many projects at one time  :)

     You're welcome anandkamal!  :)

I'm going to tell you how I export in Premiere Pro/Media Encoder, and hopefully it will apply in Resolve as well.

Make sure your timeline is set at the ratio you filmed at. Unless you shot 16:9, and want to export 2:35:1, then change the aspect ratio to 2:35:1 in your timeline, and edit.

In the export window, export as H.264, 4096 x 1742, Scale to Fill (this is for 2:35:1, you need to figure out 4K online for different aspect ratios), your frame ratio, Square Pixels (1.0), Profile High, Level 5.2, Render at Maximum Depth checked, VBR, 2 Pass, Target Bitrate (Mbps) 100, Maximum Bitrate (Mbps) 300, Use Maximum Render Quality checked, Audio Codec AAC, 48000 Hz Sample Rate, Channels Stereo, Audio Quality High, Bitrate (kbps) 320, and Precedence: Sample Rate.

     Hope this helps!

Hey anandkamal,

Cool video! I think if you sdd some stabilization inpost, like warp stabilizer in Premiere Pro it might help with some of the shake. The colors are nice. Maybe bump the exposure up a bit in your editor? Or try overexposing slightly since you can recover highlights. Another thing to try is expose to the right via the ETTR module. Great work!

Hey imagemachine,

Very interesting! Personally I take the dngs via MLVFS and apply Cinelog-C in Adobe Camera Raw to give a flat look. I then transcode the dngs into ProRes 4444 XQ clips in After Effects through the Smart Import 2 script. Then I can edit the ProRes clips in a Premiere Pro timeline set to ProRes as the Renderer in Sequence settings. These is easier on CPU. I am able to even replace the clips with After Effects Compositions for further editing in a high color depth. I add Saturations, then apply curves. I use noise reduction and sometimes sharpening depending on the lens. I also add grain. When replacing a dng sequence with an After Effects composition, After Effects only reads the first dng. This is also the reason I transcode. It's better to have a flat image baked in versus colors graded in Adobe Camera Raw, with less flexibility to color grade later if need be. Hope this helps!

Hey limey,

Ok cool. Yeah I keep watching Sony and Panasonic mirrorless videos, but am not sold on the aesthetics. The skin tones seem to grade bad, and the Teal and Orange look is all over Youtube with mirrorless videos. I don't mind the look, but people grade the footage so aggressively that it doesn't look good in my opinion. Raw is a tough workflow even if when I feel I've gotten it down to easiest setup. MLVFS, Cinelog C, The Smart Import 2 script for After Effects, and the consistent dedication of Magic Lantern makes this so worthwhile. It takes time, but it looks just right to me. A painting takes time too, you know? The colors, the skin tones, the flexibility, the more pleasing ISOs than H.264, I can go on and on about how I love 14bit raw video. I've been upscaling all my Web Exports to 4K, and I'm pretty happy with the results, especially on Vimeo. I look forward to seeing your video!

Hey D_Odell,

I'm not too familiar with Davinci Resolve, but I'm pretty sure this script is just for After Effects. Might be worth starting a new topic though!

Hello everyone,

Just figured I would let you know that Smart Import 2 in After Effects 2017 has an issue where changing Composition Frame Rate doesn't work. The Import Preference fps has to be changed in the After Effects Preferences in order for the composition to have the correct frame rate. Otherwise if you have 59.94 fps or 48 fps it can be comformed in a 23.976 fps timeline, which is something I don't want. I like to fine tune the extra frames later in Premiere Pro. Hope this helps!

Hey DeafEyeJedi,

I've had this issue before. What worked was having the files on my internal drive, then mounting MLVFS. I don't have this issue now for some reason, but that was what worked at the time being. Maybe try reinstalling Fuse to a previous version, or a previous version of MLVFS? Maybe it's issues with OS Sierra? I'm on El Capitan.

Hey limey,

You can also replace your video on Vimeo with an unsqueezed version. Youtube does not have this option.

Hey limey,

You're welcome. There isn't any squeezing that should be going on for 3x crop. But for 48 fps override or 60 fps in raw video, desqueezing is necessary. Hope this helps!

Hey limey,

Great video! If transcoding clips in the future, try using Smart Import 2: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13354.0

This will do the desqueezing automatically. If you go back to your project, try clicking scale to frame size on a clip. If not, change the height of the clips by around 1.6x. Meaning if the clips are 1600 x 540, then change 540 to 900.

     Hope this helps!

Great info here DeafEyeJedi! I haven't tried uploading XQ yet but did see on the forum that 4444 is accepted on Youtube now. I'll have to try this on Vimeo too.

Hey thapapawan,

You're welcome! I recommend using 1280x720 mode and not using fps override if you want 60 fps. This way you can record sound as well if needed.

Hey jmanord,

Thank you for sharing this information. I've used LRT Time-lapse once before, and it isn't perfect. I think for time lapses you can enable Post DeFlicker in the Magic Lantern Menu, and then use MLVFS to fix the flickering. I haven't tried this yet, but I've seen videos using it and the results are great. I haven't used Resolve yet, but would like to learn. It's difficult from what I hear to edit in Premiere and Resolve with XMLs, but now that Resolve is a Non Linear Editor it might be able to do everything all in one. You can also look into Cinelog-C and make your dngs flat, then color grade them in Resolve to avoid ACR flickering. I like transcoding MLV files from MLVFS to ProRes 4444 XQ using After Effects. You definitely seem to know what you are doing regardless of which workflow you chose. Great job!

Hey DeafEyeJedi,

So glad you like the 7D as well! I've tried to read on the forum about dark framing. Could you elaborate more? I know it involves filming with the lens cap on, but then requires more work that I didn't understand when reading. Does this only work for raw video? I'm seriously thinking about creating noise profiles for the 7D and T3i for Neat Video. It would make a massive difference, but would take some time. I've read not to go above ISO 1600 on the forum, and even when I do go above the two DSLRs have a orange highlight to the ISO setting, like Magic Lantern is telling me this is dangerous haha. I definitely could use ISO 3200 in a pinch though so that's good. I love this bug too! It's fascinating, and you can use it with sound as well! The VAF filter is great. It's great to know the aliasing and moire will not be a problem. I was confused with ETTR because of exposing to right blowing out highlights, but extremelypoorfilmaker pointed out overexposing is good because you can recover highlights. I'll have to try this out.

Hey thapapawan,

I enjoy shooting at 2:35:1 aspect ratio. It's less likely to have dropped frames on the 7D, and when uploaded to Vimeo, it looks really nice. Just upload as 1920 x 817, as well as your editing timeline. Hope this helps! Oh and you can use Cinescope crop marks on the Magic Lantern menu for framing.

Hey jmanord,

Awesome job on this! The water looks beautiful, mind telling us where this was shot? I'm also curious about your workflow, the colors are simply amazing! The flickering is not the bad, don't beat yourself up. I tend to be hard on myself as well. I didn't notice any vertical banding from playing the video right here on the forum.
