@dmilligan

Excellent!  Thanks!

@ Kharak

Thanks for the info.  Yes, using a Mac. I was thinking AE for a final edit but if that's the wrong choice -- I'm still on the ground floor looking up at a big fat learning curve and can't see the top of it yet. PLEASE let me know if you have a better place for me to start.  After my last post I found out about applying Lumetri correction effects in Premiere. That may be as good a place to final edit as any for now, I guess.  The MLVFS idea sounds good and I'll be looking into that tomorrow. Thanks again and do please let me know if you have other thoughts on workflow that may get me started. Thanks again!

I'm totally new at this and hoping for some feedback before I waste time on a non-functional workflow. This is what I have in mind:
From ML RAW files on the CF card -
to RAWMagic lite conversion -
to SpeedGrade -
to Premiere Pro  -
to After Effects.

Does this make ANY sense?
Trying to get a A,B,C answer here on RAW workflows seems to require an engineering degree  :-\

Still looking for MY workflow and finally getting around to having some ducks in a row -- Here's what I have:

5D 2 with SanDisk 64 GB Extreme Pro - 160 MB/s
MacBook Pro (2011) with an AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
Mavericks
Full suite of Adobe CC including Ae and Pr
Not too sure if I want to go the Black Magic route (or if I need to) for conversion. When I look at their site it says I need:

"CUDA Driver version 6.5.18
NVIDIA Driver version – As required by your GPU
RED Rocket-X Driver 2.1.19.0 and Firmware 1.3.19.7 or later
RED Rocket Driver 1.4.36.0 and Firmware 1.1.17.3 or later"

Seriously?
Don't need the RED stuff, right? and the NIVIDA with latest CUDA...  ???  ...since I have the AMD Radeon don't think that's accurate...

What is there besides DaVinci Resolve that would give me good results?   ... I'm still every bit the Noob.

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks everyone.
I've tried two different 2.0 CF readers.  Neither work. What I've found is that a number of manufacturers will say "works with 10.x.x or later" but don't update their information when a new OS is released. That's why I'm hesitant on the Transcend. I haven't found anything, yet, mentioning Mavericks specifically.  ... and nope, no Windows nearby. Bunch of mac heads around here (listening to 90's music) -- small town.

To follow up --

I got the Lexar Dual Slot USB 3.0 Reader Professional LRW307URBNA

The one I received from Amazon works great with Mavericks.
It's of solid construction. Much better than the other readers I've had.
I live in a dusty environment. This card reader is designed to keep the card slot clean. That by itself is WELL worth the extra (minimal) cost. Dust bunnies don't stand a chance of taking me down, suffocating my digital thoughts.

Nice work.
My wife (a former lifeguard none the less) gets creeped out in deep water.  My daughter is afraid of sharks. I'm a diver. I didn't need to see this video.  ???

My question:

When watching this and other video's that have been uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube I've been noticing a stuttering, like frames are missing. Does this happen because of frame rate differences; platform inconsistencies of some sort, too fast a shutter speed... ?

I ask because I don't understand the reasons for having frame rates to choose from that seem so close to one another. 24, 25 or 30fps seem so similar yet non-universal that I don't know which to use. I've read a few things regarding this but nothing has really helped. Any advice is appreciated!

Post processing also play in a big part, some program can make the raw footage look like crap
if you haven't master the whole workflow from filming to finish product you will always have poor results.

Some of the 5D2 RAW video I've seen is amazing! Can't wait to get started!
What is the workflow you like best? Any to stay away from? Any online tutorials you recommend?
I'm a bit surprised that lynda.com doesn't have one.

I have used this one for a number of years on both a 2012 MacBook Air and a 2013 MacBook Pro. It works fine in Mavericks and Yosemite.

Excellent. Thanks.  I also found this ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062EUE54/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=ianker-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0062EUE54 ) Their website says it works with Mavericks.  Anyone have experience with this reader?

Come on! A Windows-free community? Post somewhere in the web and ask for a helpful hand from the dark side.

What --  Patrick McGoohan and the Prisoner come to mind?   8)

...geeeezzzz. I think I'm stuck in the 90's.  Yes, meant MacBook Pro.

Thanks for the tip.  I have looked at the Transcend (  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/815153-REG/Transcend_TS_RDF8K_USB_3_0_Multi_Card.html ) but haven't found anything that says it will work with Mavericks. I'm leaning towards the Kingston (  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ES0YYA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ) but there's no guarantee the ones on the shelf are the newer versions that will work with Mavericks. (there's an online firmware upgrade for the Kingston but you need a windows PC to install it - don't have one)  So I was curious if anyone knew of a reader that's a for-sure fit off the shelf with OS X Mavericks.

Newbe question here -- How is a card reader different than using your computer? Aren't they capable of the same thing? I thought a card reader was for systems that don't have the correct card slot on the computer.

Maybe Just 3x Crop Mode ...
Min. Card Spec is 1000X CF(Lexar Work very well Or Komputerbay) for Raw...
In 3x Crop mode you can capture up to 2144x1076 @ 23.976 for about 10-15 Seconds...
When the Write speed can no longer be maintained...
and Never a Problem --

I don't think 3x Crop Mode is an option for me considering the water clarity where I'm shooting - need the full frame 15mm fisheye.
I've been pointed towards the SanDisk Extreme PRO 64GB CompactFlash Memory Card UDMA 7, 160MB/s.  How does that compare to the Lexar or Komputerbay for RAW? I'm not sure what 1000x means.
If understand correctly then, I am limited to a certain amount of time, like your 10 -15 seconds, depending on if I'm putting tons of data onto the card but can record continuously if it doesn't overwhelm the card speed? Is that correct?
The more I read (it's been a lot) the more I feel like problems are rare and easy to correct if encountered. Sure hope that's the case because I think I'm going to go for it!

Thanks again reddeercity!

Raw Video / Re: Raw video on 5DMK2
September 30, 2014, 01:10:03 AM
Hi - I'm considering ML on my 5D2 for RAW underwater video. From what I've seen the improvement in clarity may be worth the effort of learning this stuff. Since I'm a newbe at this, here are some basic questions - and sorry to any of you who are saying to themselves, oh God, again? :

1) Are there any recommendations on where to look specifically for ML and 5DII underwater use?
2) Card times - how much total raw video (min/sec) can I capture on different size/make of cards?
3) When mentioning "dropped frames" what exactly does that mean? I'm assuming it means that some limit of the card has been reached. --??
4) From what I've been reading it seems I'll need to shoot in 20ish second segments until the card is full - correct?
5) Do you know of any examples of irreparable damage to 5DII's that have installed ML?
6) Are there things I need to take into consideration I may be missing before taking the leap?

Thanks for any replies!
