Raw Video / Re: 7D Anamorphic - Getting to 2.35:1
March 06, 2016, 01:28:00 PM
Shoot 4:3 then crop in post.

Don't wanna crop? Do the maths with aspect ratio you need. :)

Can't / won't do the maths? Sell me your 2X anamorphic lens and with the money buy a 1.33X anamorphic lens, shoot 4:3 with it! :D

Here's the maths because I am a good guy:

E.G. 720 x 2.35 = 1692 ¦ 720 x 2 = 1480 ¦ 1692:1480 = 1.14

So in order to achieve a 2:35 Aspect Ratio with a 2X anamorphic lens you need to shoot at a resolution of 1.14:1

I still want your 2X anamorphic glass! :D

Magic Lantern -> Modules -> turn on mlv_snd -> Restar your camera.

You can record sound with the module mlv_rec activated. (RAW Recording 2.0) Note, the sound will be regulated by audio options in canon menu.

After you have activated the modules you need: mlv_rec and mlv_snd go into Magic Lantern -> Audio -> turn ON MLV Sound

Simple!

@extremelypoorfilmaker have you considered taking time with your gear (or better rental gear) to set up your own amazing shots outside of paid gigs specifically for your showreel? Or maybe take a great gig for "free" (or cheap) to help build your portfolio?

This may be nonsense advice as I don't actually work in the film industry outside of wedding and event coverage, but I thought that's how people get going.

That is actually what I am going to do soon. And the "funny" thing about it is: Mostly, for my private stuff, I spend much more money on: Props, VFX, Actors, Costumes, Make-up and catering. Little to nothing goes into gear! :D And yes, If the gig is great I am more than happy to work for free!

Also, I didn't get into "the business" for money. I decided to get into it because of my love of cinema. Making a living out of it would be great, not being rich, just being able to live by filming. That would make me quite happy.

What you say @DeafEyeJedi Is quite true! Every time I get offered a job I always throw Magic Lantern in. I always push to shoot with Magic Lantern. But I guess the latest gig I had the clients didn't feel comfortable with: The amount of data generated, the workflow in post. Their loss, to my eyes (and nothing for my showreel)

What you say dfort is very true, and I stand by it. Specially about the "law of the instrument". Also, I am waiting patiently for the Axiom gamma. so who knows, maybe in 2 years once I will have the money. :) Or maybe in this two years I will finally get hired by people who understand that to get a certain shot they have to hire specific gear.

Mostly, in the last jobs i have worked on, I have been asked very specific shots that simply were not possible to do with my own equipment, but as soon as the word: "Hire" was mentioned, those shots were quickly scrapped..

I feel like I am stuck in a loophole: My showreel doesn't stand out -> I don't get hired to do cool stuff -> I don't get hired to shoot cools stuff -> My showreel doesn't stand out.

Want my showreel to stand out -> I have to spend money to get the shots that stand out.

Most paid AD on Mandy.com or starnow for example require the Cameraman / DP to have it's own kit.
And the last offer I got came from a friend of mine that is planning to shoot a short about police brutality in Italy, but the DP will be this guy that he knows because he has access to all the fancy gear (REDs, Anamorphic glass, Arri 5000W Fresnels etc.) because he works for a rental company. Even if he told me that he would prefer me to DPing he has to give the job to this other guy and leave me be an AC. Still, better than nothing, it's a paid job, so I can't complain (If he manages to gets the funds) but it leaves me a bit bitter.

I don't know, maybe it's just me being unlucky or maybe I haven't come across the right crowd yet.

you should tell to the last guy (That still owes me £100) Conversation went like that:

HIM:"you got an 85mm?"
ME: "yes"
HIM: "Canon or zeiss?"
ME: "Samyang"
HIM: "2 seconds of silence"

Bottom end is: To get amazing shots you either need to know people that are producing cool stuff or be rich.
Unfortunately.

Thanks for quick reply @extremelypoorfilmaker

Did you upgrade? Which one did you upgrade to?

I'll take your advice on not buying this monitor. @deafeyejedi recommends the Atomos Shogun. Its a bit pricey but a great backup for recording ProResHQ.

I'm looking for a monitor that will let me see the ML overlays but does not have to record to an external hard drive like the Shogun.

I want to record MLV Raw with Sound. I am using Firm 1.1.3 Build Mar.02.15.

Thanks ML community

If you want to be able to monitor externally, you should be upgrading to firmware 1.2.3 (Assuming you have a 5D3) There is no external monitoring supported for the firmware you are currently using.

I haven't upgraded yet because at the moment I am not in ned to. I will at some point, but If i will, I will probably sink my money in an Odyssey 7Q:

https://www.convergent-design.com/products/odyssey7q.html

This and the ninjas are quite pricey, but they serves as external recorders as well, so in case in the future you will pass from a DSLR to a "Big Boys" camera (Arri, Sony FS7 F5, C500, Aja cion, Kinefinity Blackmagic ursa etc.)

If you just need a simple external monitor, Lilliput does interesting stuff not too pricey.

But if you got money to splash, go for a ninja or odyssey :)

General Chat / Tailor Making Magic Lantern?
March 05, 2016, 11:19:20 PM
Ok.

I was thinking:

Probably, for most people £10000 / £15000 Is not much money. An easy loan that most people could get from the bank.

For me, that means literally living with £25 a month for food, clothings etc. for 2 years more or less.

Why?

Because my credit score is so low that I can't get a loan anywhere (a part from loan sharks aka payday loans, (or actual loan sharks))
so, in order to rack up that amount of money I will have to save up £500 a month from my salary: £1177 (And i live in London, UK. My rent + buss pass + phone bills + direct debits is £650)

Even if thanks to magic lantern i can shoot RAW, all the paid job i got as a Camera Operator were shot with my 5D3 in h264 (not my choice)
and mostly, I believed i got them because I have a Ronin-M.

Now, what I have noticed in the last few jobs is that, the people who hired me, they didn't really cared about my skills as a filmmaker. What they wanted to know first, even before hearing my experience was: The brand of my Camera. The brand of my lenses.
Obviously, once i told them my camera (5D3) and my lenses (Samyang 85m T1.5, Helios 58mm f2, Nikon 28mm f2.8, Canon 24-105 f4 L) They were not willing to pay me £150 per day.

So, that made me thinking: "If I save every penny for the next 2 years, I might be able to afford the RED RAVEN jetpack package + Batteries and wireless follow focus, so then I could be totally justified charging £500 per day"

But that span TWO other thoughts:
1) for the things I want to do, I NEED to be able to record at least at 120 fps in 2K RAW.
2) The RED RAVEN seems to be the only solution, because all other cameras in that price range can't quite match what the RED RAVEN offers.

But then I thought: "If I am ready to put such a strain on myself in order to rack up £10000 in 2 years more or less, would I be crazy thinking maybe to buy a 1DC or a C300 and with the rest of the money, pay somebody to develop Magic Lantern for them?"

I know that Magic Lantern for the C series will never exist, but I like so much working with DNGs that I would be gladly willing to take the risk.

Am I crazy, stupid or shall I stick with my original project of buying the RED RAVEN in 2 years? (Or earlier if I find a sponsor)
I hope you will help me out! :)

Your husband is that guy who stolen extremelypoorfilmaker's gear?

Hey, Vikapolyak! I want my lenses and guitar back! He can keep laptop and camera. And if he has installed Magic Lantern on my good old 6D he can keep the 24-105mm L RAW video will show him the light! :D I now own a 5D3, probably in 2 years will own a RED (Unless the devs accept £5000 to tailor made magic lantern for the C100 / 1DC for me!)
But I want my 11-16mm tokina back!!! :D

Uh! I think I deleted that video.

anyway, was a pretty useless video I must say. Nothing that can be done in writing.

so, canon 5D3 + Magic Lantern + Aputre VS2:

The monitor works fine with the 5D3 with Magic Lantern running alongside Canon FRIMWARE 1.2.3 Note you can't have external monitoring with firmware 1.1.3 firmware 1.3.3 has not been ported (yet).

Just connect camera and monitor via HDMI (best resolution) turn monitor on and then camera. If you have the mirroring option selected in your Menu, you will have a clean feed from the camera with no overlays. All the overlays will remain in your camera monitor. With No-Mirroring, the monitor will became de facto your primary monitor with no image being displayed onto the cam display.

In order to review your RAW footage with the monitor you will need to run it in no-mirroring mode. If you do so, it will work fine, but the background of your monitor will display all sort of craziness instead of being BLACK like it normally is through the camera display.
Worry not. I do not know why it will do that, but it brings no harm to either the cam or the monitor.

The monitor has focus peaking (ML focus peaking is better) False color, Zebras, cropmarks. All works fine. But still, Magic Lantern own cropmarks, zebra etc. are far better than the monitor ones.

In essence: Don't buy it.
The battery slot at the back will be a bit funny with certain batteries: If bent with the battery facing the ground there is the risk that the battery will disconnect and you will need to tape it to the monitor so that it will not go off as you are shooting.

The deal breaker: UNUSABLE outside even with the shader. The screen is so glossy, that you will end up looking at yourself instead of what's going on inside your frame. Perfectly fine in darkness or interiors.

My advice: Spend an extra £/$/€100-200 and get a better brand.

And one more case - 4k upscaled files uploaded to youtube have much better quality/lower compression even in 1080p than native 1080p clips.

true that. This and what Walter said I would think is the only reason to upscale to 4K
bear in mind, without a monster pc and a 4K screen, it will be a PAIN editing.

In my modest opinion, If You really have this need for 4k, I would look into anamorphic adapters 2X But forget having a 16:9 aspect ratio if you want to take full advantage of the upscaling.

Duplicate Questions / Re: 4k Raw 5dm3

but seriously, apart from production meant to be projected on massive screens, who needs 4K? Because even if you have a camera that shoots 4K you need a PC / Mac that supports 4K AND a monitor for it! I, for example, would buy a 4K camera only to get more work as DP only. But there's no way I would be able to edit properly with my current PC set-up.

It's simple: convert your DNG sequence in an upscaled jpeg sequence.
Bear in mind, it will NOT be true 4k

Pretty pointless doing that as you will lose out in quality.
and it will be time and HD space consuming :)

If anyone who is using magic lantern chipped in with £10 each we could buy a C100 and a C300 to the devs to develop Magic Lantern for those cameras.. And then we could share them! :D

Spoiler alert: I am joking

also, there is another way to get """"""""""""""""4K"""""""""""""" on the 5D3: Shoot in 4:3 and get an anamorphic lens! (Or anamorphic adapter)

@motionSOUL

How can you interrupt a forum post, especially on your topic? :D You are more than welcome! You are even welcome to tell me to shut up because I don't understand one thing about Cinema! :)
Care to explain to me what's more complex than what I got from it? Because, aside for that, I really didn't get what this movie is all about. :) (AGAIN, NO OFFENSE HAS TO BE TAKEN PLEASE! I am just trying to get my opinion across)

@cmccullum
I have to agree with you. Most probably, it's just that this short movie is not my cup of tea. I think the cinematography and the VFX are very good. The acting is Good too, but the rest is too artsy for a brute like me to understand :D

I could say that what I get from the content is a woman re-living the fact that 9/11 killed her lover inside her bathroom. At first, I thought we were going to see as well the man the Voice Over talks about, and I was disappointed by the fact it didn't show.

At first view I though it was the beginning of something else..

Ok, first off, I really like the colors and the framing. good cinematography hands down.

But (And I do not mean to be offensive, REALLY) I really don't understand why this short movie is so good as everybody is saying. Is it because of taste? Is it because i can not see the subtext? I have seen it a few times and I really, really can not understand why would it be picked by any festival. Of course, I am glad for the maker that is getting so much good feedback, still, I am really struggling to see why.

AGAIN, I am not trying to be a troll or anything I would really like to understand What you all see that I clearly don't?

jonbobshinigin!

you are not alone! :D I do the same workflow. It is super long, but so far I haven't come across a better software for grading dngs! (and YES, I DO have davinci resolve) I never feel like I have total control over colors like with lightroom while I have been using Davinci or any other video editing software.

The only thing that gets close but not as good as lightroom is the Lumetri panel of the latest version of premiere pro CC 2015. Usually, what I do is, I generate mov files from mlvrawviewer, I edit with that, and once the editing is locked, I colour the clips i have used in Lightroom, export them in h264 through after effects and then replace them. :)

@mothaibaphoto

with AE you can apply settings ONLY on the FIRST frame. sometimes settings for the first frame might not look good further on. (It happened to me)
#121
My money are on:

a)Human error (somebody didn't read the instruction properly :)
b)Camera already defective!

:)

h264 is what most video streaing website like the most. You can choose the amount of compression usually. good quality is 4 upwards

Hi guys, not to sure this is the right section of the forum to post this, but I will go ahead anyway. Hopefully one of the "big guys" will pick it up.

In short, I recently bought this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008H2I1M2/ref=pd_luc_rh_bxgy_01_01_t_img_lh?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

It is an M42 to EF adapter with AF confirmation chip. Sold by Xsource on Amazon UK, made by don't know who.

In short: It does not work well with ML 5D3 1.2.3 August 2014 version.

This is what happened: (just 5 mins ago by the date of this post)

Camera off,
adapter and lens mounted
LED blinking weirdly
Turn camera on: Failed firmware update screenshot.

Panicking and cold sweat (have a shoot sunday the 13th)

taking battery out
wait 10 sec
put battery back in
camera on
all normal.

That's good!

Camera on
Removing lens
putting the same adapter with AFchip on
As soon as it is in place, Error message.

Mini heart attack

Remove battery
Wait 10 sec.
Turn camera back on
All normal.

Apparently, it does not seem to fuck your camera up, BUT IT DEFINITELY messes with Magic Lantern / (canon firmware?).

I am very sorry not to have recorded or memorized the error message i received or how many time he LED blinked when I putted it in the first time. But the fear of losing my 5D3 just took over and the only thing I was focused on was to get the battery out ASAP.

I am doubly sorry not to be able to replicate this test because I scraped the chip out of the adapter straight away out of pure fear. Hopefully, this event has been documented before. If not, I hope this post will help future people looking to buy AF confirmation third party adapters.

Hey! Nice meeting you mr. Ferrandas! :) I believe i posted the link to your website before reading the Magic Lantern chapter on your guide.
Thank you very much for your help! And thank you for your availability. At the moment i am shooting mostly with a Kowa 2x. I am quite lucky as its minimal focus distance is "only" 1.2m therefore no need for a diopter in close up! :)
