Ah OK, thanks!

I couldn't find this anywhere, I know the differences in FPS, but what are the differences in resolution between 1.1.3 and 1.2.3? Can we get 2K Cine straight out of 1.1.3?
I've only been running 1.2.3.

Thanks,
S

I'm interested too, anyone?
Rycote gets good reviews and heard that same thing about Rode.

Follow up, yesterday this hit the mailboxes:
http://www.arri.com/camera/alexa/cameras/camera_details/alexa-sxt

So it seems Arri are going for the upscale route.
It's the same sensor as in the previous XT and Classic models. 3.4 K at "open gate". And this is their new top line for at least, what 2017?
(There's been rumors tough that something is brewing from the Arri 65 set up which is only rental.)

However, once again, it's the sensor quality, not the K's.
And battle between ProRes and Raw takes a new turn ;)

General Chat / Re: Canon 5D4 port
March 19, 2015, 01:58:11 PM
Nothing new about the 5D4 / 5DC, but those who are interested about the 4K there's strong rumors that C300 II and C500 II will have it as well as something new for the GH4 competition, which is interesting.

As a 5D3 mlv user, my favorite upgrade would to 4K Raw, but we might have to wait. They say that 5D3 is selling good so they don't hurry. I hope we hear something in the NAB.

Thanks!
Have to do some tests :)

- The aspect ratio was 2,66:1 but just cropped in post. I shot it all in 1920 to 1080 (after desqueezing). Next time I will shoot less than 1080, to get more recording time, and still some vertical freedom in post.
- Twixtor 5
- For the grading I mixed a lot of things. I wasn't sure if that would be the best solution, or if I would lose dynamic range, but it is a mix of a Osiris LUT (M31) and filmconvert among other elements. I had a lot of layer switching, and curves experiments.
- After Effects. I was thinking about Resolve for colouring, but thought it would be easier all in one package. I actually edited also in After Effects (and not Premiere). Probably need a better working method in the future, but this worked OK for now.
- I had no real problems with the cards. The 1066X could record a bit longer than the 1000X. I think only once I had a group of corrupt files. Luckily I shot a lot that night, with many good shots, so it was not a problem. But if it contained some crucial scenes, it would be a big problem.
I noticed that the grading was unique and familiar at the same time.
I've seem people editing with what ever tool they like best, end result only matters. AE seems to work for you, I wouldn't have guessed that.
I have the 1066x KB 64GB since last August and the only time I have gotten corrupted files was when I made silly things while testing. However, losing any little thing when shooting by the plan would be really annoying.

I like your compositions. Lot of good stuff in details.
What exposure tools did you use? ETTR? Zebras? Histogram? Lightmeter? EV? Eye?

Thanks! This is really helpful and inspiring.

I guess that makes sense. So I'll just save up to get a few more KB 128GB 1066x's instead then. Thanks for the heads up @SiSS!
No problem. There's lot of stuff written about that here. In the video RAW business, CF cards and 5D3 hardware have been maxed out. 1066x should be the best option.

#34
Yeah maybe I throw that too lightly. I have seen some great cinematic stuff from RED that I didn't think was made with it. It's maybe more how people tend to use it. Working with newer RED's is as pro as it gets.

Hey I understand, and it's great!
I'm really grateful for all the work!

But there's the thing, I too am willing to work my a** off to get the results I want.

And there's the fear for me.

In my opinion, there's only two companies who have really nailed "cinematic" digital cameras. And I'm not surprised at all that film is still option for many feature projects. Those two are Arri, which have had no hurry to get in to the 4K game, because of the very reason that no resolution equals with overall sensor quality.

And the other, Canon sensors with Magic Lantern Raw tweak.

That's it.
Well Panavision, but you know.

For me GH4, A7s, F*ckin FS700, RED, Black Magic 4K etc., they all look video (imo).
Axiom ain't gonna get Arri/Canon sensors. No matter how many K's or teal&orange LUTs they throw at us.

Valid point about the money/work installed. Also open source all the way. These projects keep the Canon's giving us 5D3's etc.
Just that, I'm so disappointed at Black Magic. 5D3 just keeps working.

chmee - are you sure.

Watch this, AXIOM Team Talk - Volume 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g49iStiio4s

I'm not sure are you with the Devs here, but if not, Magic Lantern is talked on that video. And I wish all the good to these guys, however its all in between the lines.
Axiom Beta will really be Beta, it's not 5D comparison, it's comparison for Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and such. Why, because it's all new. Give a decade for these guys and then their in the competition.
For filmmakers there's too much trouble and problems of a new product ahead.

I watched Black Magic Cinema Camera progress really closely, in the end, it only works on paper.
Axiom Gamma sounds good, but it's so new stuff, and watching that video, man, 2017 is optimistic.

Then again, why should you move away from Canon 5D IV/C, with CFast 4K?
Do you think that people at ML are not interested tweaking Raw out of that?

It might be four 5D cameras this year:

5D IV
5D C

[CR1] so only speculation, but hey who would believe 5DS / 5DSR and those where based on 1D.  So the 1D C replacement sounds realistic.

Very nice!
Lot of great shots, love the subway, the candles, opening shots.

I almost jumped the Zeiss wagon, I was going back and forth for a year. So good I didn't see this month ago, would have spoiled my plans yet again :) Maybe in the future.

Few questions
- What was the aspect ratio here? Straight from camera or did you change it in the post?
- What version of the Twixtor?
- How about the grading? Reminds me of some Vision stuff...
- Which NLE?
- Have you had any problems with those CF cards?

Cheers,
S

P.S. DeafEyeJedi - Not much help from 1200x, hardware limitations.

General Chat / Re: Alexa Mini - oh my!
February 24, 2015, 08:58:36 AM
I think the price is in the line for them.
I don't think many here are on the target market for owning any version of Alexa.

The thing is, the big boys at the industry have been needing this for a while. The fact that it's easily mixed with main Alexa, makes it perfect second camera for many purposes. I'll bet we see lot of creative stuff out of that, first at the commercials and then feature.

It's a beauty tough.

There are rumors and then there are rumours.
That place has been good for years, check out their forum.
Also notice how there's some nice interviews with Canon big chiefs.

Here's an older rumor, nobody believed that, "three cameras, hu..."
http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/01/eos-5d-mark-iii-replacement-talk-cr2/

Even older "50mp, two variants, no way"
http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/11/another-50mp-ff-dslr-mention-cr2/

50mp in CR3, december 17th
http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/12/high-megapixel-camera-coming-in-2015-cr3/

Anyway AxiomGamma not until 2017
http://youtu.be/g49iStiio4s?t=13m4s

So I'll bet you, my first 4K raw comes from this baby.

Edit: for those who are interested about C300, NAB is the date

General Chat / 5D IV / C

Sweet, sweet CR2 level rumor at always reliable Canonrumors:
http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/02/possible-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-spec-talk-cr2/
CR2 means the good stuff. Lately the 5D s and r were first leaked correctly at Canonrumors.

If I'm not mistaken 5D s and r were related to earlier 1D models and this one is most likely based on the 1D C sensor, as there's 18mp "only". That will be great tough, for video, as 18mp is 5208 x 3477 making good quality 4K possible, and most likely keeping costs on current level. There is also EOS-1D X Mark II coming that will issue other needs. Also s and r have their place. So this is almost like made for ML movies.

Also it seems that stalling to buy current CF cards more than absolutely needed, is paying off. CFast is coming like hoped. Double. And that's the future for long time. Probably the greatest news for ML devs.

In theory this means that the current Magic Lantern limitations of 5D3 speeds would be gone and in 12 to 24 months we could get 4K Raw out of that baby... in Canon quality package.

EDIT: Changed the name of the topic. Original was:   5DIV / X - CFast - 4K - less than 12 months - Canonrumors [CR2]

What is the status at this time?
#43
Let's bring this up from almost year ago.
What DIT transfer tools people are using today?
#44
QuoteLens in shots
1) Tokina 16-28mm 2.8
2) Canon 50mm 1.4
3) Canon 50mm 1.4
4) Canon 50mm 1.4
5) Canon 100mm 2.0
6) Canon 100mm 2.0
7) Canon 50mm 1.4

Thanks! Very helpful.
And damnit, I'm very close going the Zeiss ZE f2 route for 50mm and 100mm. Now this makes me think again :)
And then there's the 35mm problem too...

I really like what you did in Don Donut and in Swing, sharpness and colors. Composition. And editing. Makes me once again wonder how much more worth comes out of the L -series, ZE series.. not to mention CNE or CP.2...

I Have the 85mm EF and the stills have been amazing.
I guess the EF series is underestimated when working with 5D3...?

P.S. I think the cropping has meaning here too....
#45
I guess he means lights, how many and what lights? Or only the sun?

I'm interested about the Don Donut clip:
http://vimeo.com/100784864
Very well done!

What lights did you use there?
I would love it if you could break down the lenses used in different shots (first 7 shots, 20 sek.)!

Cheers,
S
#46
Yeah got to try that, thanks!
#47
Yeah good point.
Hey what if I want audio in to the same monitor for director, so that he/she can use headphones from the monitor. And we are recording dialogue to external field recorder, let's say Sound Devices 633. What would be the best way to send audio from the 633 to directors headphones wireless?
#48
Ok thanks! If we go that route, then we must have cable available too.
Then again I think, if it's for director monitor only, you can be close to camera. But with stabilizers you need to have some room operate...hope it's worth it!

Any better solutions for going wireless?

I have these results for my 2 newest cards, right from the pack:

KOMPUTERBAY 64GB 1066x / 5D MKIII / 24FPS #1

KOMPUTERBAY 64GB 1066x / 5D MKIII / 24FPS #2

Here's another Kombuterbay 64GB 1066x CF on Canon 5D3.123 @ 24fps right after formating:

Edit:
1) My initial test before formating the card was little bit slower, every buffer.
2) After the test above I did it again few days later. I formated card again, then reboot and this time I ran card warm up (1gb). However there wasn't almost any difference at all. Same numbers +/- 0.1

Let's bring this up!

Has anyone experienced with these?
I'm thinking about DP4/MustHD 5.6 for cameracrew and from there wireless to directors monitor.

Any suggestions?
