Hi , just a quick question. I'm looking to upgrade my 7D to a full frame such as a 6D (was going to go for a older 5D mkii), as I tend to shoot RAW videos in low light.

I haven't been able to find many RAW videos where the 6D is in 2K? Is the 6D able to shoot well in 2K or isn't its buffer quick enough.

hey dmilligan,  thank you for the concise answer (I need to try that ISO experiment). I ran a test time-lapse before I had read your reply though.  As you can see
at the end of the time-lapse the ISO had maxed out to 800 therefore making it really noisy in the image, but hopefully increasing the shutter time next try will fix this.

I should have also turned off auto white balance as you can see the temperatures changing all around the place. Question - I don't think i did the post deflicker in ACR correctly, i did read the instructions on page 1 though. I selected all the photos and corresponding XML files and imported them into ACR. I could see the exposure slider increasing throughout the images (deflicker module doing its job) but as you can see in the video there are the odd few frames that are overexposed?  is the deflicker normally like this or have I missed a step??  Also right at the end of the time-lapse it was pretty much pitch black, though in the time-lapse it looks like quite a lot of light. how can you reduce the exposure when its dark - is a there setting or should I just do it in post manually.

any other suggestions please let me know! I'm going to try another time-lapse tomorrow. thanks matt

It's probably beeping twice because the scene lighting is changing, and by the time it takes the next picture there is less light than AETTR expected there to be, and so AETTR is letting you know the photo was slightly underexposed.

The shutter speed isn't changing because either: you reached the slowest shutter set in the AETTR menu or you had AETTR set to only change ISO.

hey dmilligan thanks for the reply. I read in previous comments, that you can change the ISO max limit in the Canon menu, so I did that (ISO 800). Yes, the scene lighting was changing as it was getting dark, but i was taking each photo at 10 second intervals so it wasn't drastically changing with each shot.  I can't see anywhere in Auto ETTR menu where it says "change only ISO" or something of that nature.

I've just run a test sunset time-lapse using auto-ETTR and the post deflick module.
just a couple of questions.

To my knowledge auto-expsoure to the right is a shooting technique to get best signal-to-noise ratio of a photo.

I know it automatically sets the exposure on your camera for you, so the RAW histogram is to right (more lights then darks). I also believe AUTO-ETTR automatically adjusts your shutter speed and ISO to achieve this.

A previous statement on this forum was:
"Take two or three pictures until the RAW histogram ETTR hint is less than 0.2 "

My ETTR hint at the start of the timelapse shooting was less than 0.2  - so when I took a photo it beeped once .  But when I came back to the camera a hour later (night) to check, it started beeping twice after each photo was taken.
Why is this? I know 2 beeps means i have to take the photo again, but why?

Also I want to ramp exposure using shutter speed not ISO, but instead throughout the shooting the camera just kept increasing the ISO automatically and the last photo ended up with a ISO of 3200, which gave me a really noisy photo as Canon 7Ds aren't really good past a ISO of 1000. Whilst the shutter speed remained constant.

Would someone please give me a few pointers, would be greatly appreciated! , Thanks Matt

Just wanna get some opinions on making sunset time lapses using this adv_int.mo module. I've installed it on my ML Canon 7D and seems to work fine.

I'm planning next week to do a time lapse of the sunset from roughly 5pm to (Night) 6.40pm.  I'm bit of a newb so bare with me.
I understand bulb ramping and I want to ramp my shutter speed (Tv) over the course of roughly 2 hours to pitch black (night). I'm thinking of having constant ISO and Aperture - as I'm shooting mountains and don't want to change my depth of field.  I notice people keep talking about using auto-ETTR when using this module but i don't quite understand it.

I'm thinking of starting the shooting at 5.07pm which is civil twilight with these settings - (Tv) 1/8, (Av) 5.0 , (ISO) 150
then have it ramp to 6.41pm with - (Tv) 5 ", (Av) 5.0 , (ISO) 150   <<rough guess

I've work out that with a Interval of 10 seconds it would take 600 shots to get to the duration of 1 hr 40 min.

So therefore my plan would be to input keyframe settings as below.
Keyframe - Time 1           Keyframe - Time 600
Shutter - 1.8 "                 Shutter - 5.0 seconds
Aperture - 5.0                   Aperture - 5.0
ISO - 150                        ISO - 150

Questions that are coming into my mind - when the exposure is ramping (inclining) does it do it linear?  I would believe the suns light goes down in logarithmic fashion?.
Also i think it would go longer than 1 hr 40 min as when the shutter speeds time keeps increasing it adds to overall time, right?

Before i go any further i would love to get your opinions?

just wondering if it is possible to bulb ramp (for sunset time-lapsing) on Canon 7D with ML. I don't want to purchase any external equipment to do it.
The intervalometer menu doesn't give you Bulb Ramping options.
I have read that you can install a module or something? is that true?

The crop mode is cropping the full sensor resolution and not the 1080p image which is achieved through line skipping, I hope this explains.

ok makes sense, then how can't you just start with a 2.5k resolution (from my full sensor res) in my RAW video settings?, why do i have to have like choose my max capable res of 1728x972 and then crop it to increase it 2.5k res. thats whats confusing me lol

I'm trying to find out more about the exposure preset option in the exposure menu. How do you use this? can you only have 2 presets and toggle between the two?

is there a way to have multiple exposure presets (starting templates i like to think) in ML and conviently name them "light low" "night" "sunset" etc instead of constantly changing heaps of settings.

i know you can save Config files but thats like saving the magic latern's whole state and you have to restart the camera for it to update the settings, instead of just quickly changing a preset on the fly.

i also aware of the Custom1, Custom2, Custom3 on dial but i can't remember every time i go shooting what exposure settings on each custom preset, i would love a option where you could "name" and save these settings and just bring them up.

could someone please help me on this issue

with global draw off I can only get 27.7 MB/s buffer=16384. I purchased a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64Gb 90MB/s speed. do i have a fake card? it should be writing quicker than this.

the only module i have installed currently is raw_rec, i disabled the mlv_rec as it skip frames earlier when i recorded RAW video. it only lasted for like 3 seconds then it skipped a frame and stopped.

Is there any quick fix or is there a setting I'm missing?    btw I'm shooting 1728x972

ML allows me to record in RAW (using raw_rec) for like 4 seconds and then does the same thing and goes:

early stop (11) this is a bug please report it

is there a way you can test your actually write speed of CF card? is it under that "benchmark" option in lateen. It says test read/write of card. When i run the test it comes up with multiple write speeds listed which one is the actual speed as it all has different buffer sizes. thanks matt

I've been practicing using ML on my 7D, I initially just installed a ML 7D march 13 nightly release ( didn't really know what I was doing, I just put it on) which i found worked reasonably well, had a few glitches like it would quickly load the original canon firmware GUI now and then instead ML when pressed the trash button.

Anyway, before people start going off at me saying why don't you read the manual and all that jazz, but the fact is I look all through these forums/wikis and it must give great confusion to someone starting out to what actual ML firmware to put on your camera i.e what release alpha release, nightly, stable etc. Because someone tells you to install something in one thread and another person tells you install something in another, plus there is so many topics which one do I read.
Firstly to make things clear does Magic Lantern have a stable release for 7D? i can't find one if so, if i were to install it would I miss out on additional features that people have added in the alphas/nightlys, how do I combat this problem or simply what should i install? Everyone seems to be installing this Pelican's nightly build, should I install that?  can someone please shed some light that would be greatly appreciated. thanks matt

i have a canon 7d with a rokinon 24mm cine lens, now with this cine lens you change the aperture via the ring on the lens. and you can't control the f-stop from within magic lateen (i think).
anyway i will have my photo ready on the live view properly exposed, then i take a picture and its overexposed. what am i doing wrong here, is it the lens? because you can't control the aperture from the software or is there a live view setting I've got wrong? thanks matt

also what the optimum setups for shooting RAW on a 16GB CF card canon 7D. what frame rate and resolution/aspect ratio should i be shooting?

its says it can't write 1920 x 1080p to my card, because it requires 67.1 MB/s at 24 fps. is my CF card not quick enough?

thanks for the reply, that helps I've installed modules mlv_play, mlv_rec, and raw_rec. what modules do you have installed on your 7D? whats the difference between the 2 record modules.
also when i recorded the video and played it back it was really slow is this normal?

sorry to sound like a newb, but i just updated my magic lantern to the latest 7D build but i have no options for frame rate, RAW, resolution etc under Movie menu.
