A short post on DOFIS's sister script that runs on the M3, albeit under a CHDK environment.

The post includes a video of the deep focus and infinity focus script running.

The CHDK environment drives the EF-M lenses rather well.

As a simple photographer, ie not a videographer, all I would say is try and maximise your photon capture by not over using ISO.

High ISO shooting doesn't increase noise like many think, it decreases the signal to noise of the image, especially in the shadow areas.

You need to look for capture strategies that capture the most photons and know when your sensor becomes ISO invariant. ETTR at the low ISOs, ie below the ISO invariance point, but not at high ISOs.

On my 5D3, I would not capture above ISO 1600-3200. On M I personally wouldn't shoot above ISO 1600.

As I say, I'm not a video person, but I would expect the same principles to apply, assuming you are post processing each RAW video frame. That is RAW video is 'just' RAW photography done repetitively  :)

@whitelight

Yes, I've used it for internal shots and, as you say, ie looking out of a window. It looks as if it might be useful IF you also need to focus bracketing indoors. The sky bracket can be set between 2-6 Ev, ie relative to the rest of the scene.

An alternative approach, using DOFIS, is to use Dual-ISO when auto focus bracketing, ie without the sky bracket, but having ETTRed for the scene. But here you are limited to less than a 3Ev lift for the shadows.

Another approach is to use ML's advance bracketing, together with DOFIS's manual focus bracketing traffic light feature.

Bottom line: I have tried to craft DOFIS as a versatile focus tool for all photographers and videographers, ie who want to have more control and info on focus.

I thought some may be interested in my new DOFIS Sky Bracketing feature, that works with auto focus bracketing.

Scripting Q&A / Re: Dual ISO and Lua

Many thanks for the hints. Now I know it's not me, I'll seek out a fix, if I can.

Cheers

Scripting Q&A / Dual ISO and Lua
March 23, 2021, 10:00:53 AM
@a1ex

I'm not sure you are able to pick up on questions like this.

I'm playing with a script at the moment where I switch off Dual ISO between shots.

Using menu.set("Expo","Dual ISO",0) the dual ISO is switch off, ie when I exit I clearly see it's off.

The problem is, when I call camera.shoot dual iso is still active.

Are you aware of any issues with dynamically switch dual on and off in scripts?

Cheers

Not strictly an ML post, but it is related as this post is a demo of the DOFIS model running on a CHDK M3 and showing how I use Helicon Focus for landscape, deep focus bracketing.

Thanks for the update.

Scanning the agreement, the one area that may need clarifying is this one

QuoteFees. The Signatories agree to donate ten percent (10%) of the Project's gross revenue (includ- ing, but not necessarily limited to, all income and donations) to Conservancy for its general operations.

That is how to measure gross revenue in our ML project. The wording implies at least 10% of donations go to Conservancy. I guess this is the base model?

QuoteYou will be restricted to shoot wide open

If you can still change the aperture you can use the lens twist to lock in an aperture, ie you may not have to shoot wide open.

Worth trying.

I'm pleased to release the latest DOFIS uplift, which you can read about here: https://photography.grayheron.net/2021/03/dofis-traffic-light-augmented.html

This release adds a 'Traffic Light' feature that greatly improves the speed of manually capturing focus brackets.

The post includes a video showing the feature being used.

A minor tweak to DOFIS to allow you to select a visible band or IR band diffraction model.

This means I can switch diffraction models according to how I am using my Full Spectrum EOSM, eg with or without an IR filter.

QuoteI just don't see how ML can get better, it's kinda hardware-limited by now.

We all look at things through different eyes  ;D

The video was not the point of my post  ;)

I see untapped potential, ie building on the shoulders of giants.

Putting ML into new/modern Canon cameras: obviously.

Enhancing Lua scripting to give users what they individually want/need.

Bottom line: in the camera world, IMHO, ML is unique, and the star feature is scripting  :)

Thank you  ;)  :)

It's becoming impossible to post on this forum because people only look literally at things.

Oh well, such is life when you have an international forum  :)  ;)

General Chat / The future for ML

Just me having a bit of weekend fun...in a positive way.

I'm so excited about the prospects of a resurgence in ML development, fingers crossed.

I see AI based ideas cropping up all over the place, eg this latest one from Leica  https://youtu.be/i2juNxPsHe8

You see these things unfolding in other cameras, and your mind opens regarding what ML could do in a modern Cam, eg an R series, with Lua scripting.
