You describe drag and drop action from the zip file to SD. Have you extracted all the files from the zip to some other directory before you drag and drop to SD? I cant think of anything else at this time.

Review the post processing forum for a variety of Post Processing HDR workflows. The Blinking video that is recorded needs to have odd and even frames separated and then recombined and tweaked to give a higher than normal dynamic range. HDR is most suitable for scenes that have a dynamic range that is higher than the camera can produce using only 1 ISO setting. Low ISO frames give detail in bright areas and High ISO frames give detail in dark areas.  Recombined that can produce stunning video that would otherwise have areas that are too dark or too bright. Think of shooting indoors thru a window to bright sunny beach and have indoor exposures look as good as the bright outdoors exposures look through the window.

Main Builds / Re: New features and documentations
January 03, 2013, 01:05:19 AM
I will be putting today's nightly build thru some testing over the next several days and provide my input for documentation purposes.

EDIT:
I've been sick last couple of weeks so I have had time for only working and being sick. I'll try to get some feedback soon.

General Help Q&A / Re: Shutter speed, what am I missing
January 02, 2013, 09:39:50 PM
I am using the latest nightly build and can confirm the 1/25 limit on a 600D. I cant explain why, maybe someone else can provide more detail. Anyone?

I have found that in the ML EXPO menu and using the TV/AV arrow key shortcuts in liveview, it wont go below 1/25 in Manual photo mode.

WORKAROUND:
Use the scroll wheel to drop below 1/25 s. This is the default canon method of changing Shutter speed.

Perhaps this should be moved to bug report, unless I too am missing something and this limit is there for a reason. If not, then we should be able to drop shutter speed as needed in ML Expo and LV av/tv shortcuts, right?

Cant really comment on slit scan but you wont be able to get 50fps out of the cam with ML. The FPS override feature in ML is meant for reducing FPS not increasing it.

Share Your Photos / "Army Men" series. Lens "whacked"
December 19, 2012, 11:47:33 PM
I shot these recently experimenting with the primes I have collected over the years. I used an olympus 50mm 1.4 (you could kill someone with this thing, it is very heavy) for these images. Obviously this lens wont mount on my 600D so I set my lens on the table in front of my open 600D. The "benefit" of this configuration is flare and narrow focal plane. Moving and rotating the lens to compose and focus the images. The downside is flare and narrow focal plane and more importantly that you expose the cam sensor to contaminants since the cam is open with no attached lens.

ML - focus peak, zebras, key shortcuts, Exp override.

I was pleased with the results and thought I would share.  Please check them out here and as always and comments or questions are appreciated. Enjoy.

BTW why cant I figure out how to post a thumbnail. I even made a reduced version just for that purpose. Someone please clue me in.

I really liked the overall tone of this video and always love to watch animation. I think more attention on control of focus would have improved this animation but even with those minor concerns I found it to be enjoyable to watch. I liked the 'sad little guy' character carrying his heart around seeking true love.

Great sequences with dynamic visuals, enhanced with some nice music made me a fan of this video. Good job.

In the original post, the cam is indicated as 5dM2 and then in your last post it is 5dM3. Which model was used?

QuoteWe the MarkIII 160iso for dark rooms

Do you mean 1600 ISO?
Thanks for your answers.

Looks really good. We see lots of low light shooting with very little noise. Did you desnoise those low light indoor scenes or is the 5dmii that good in low light? Thanks for sharing.

Feature Requests / Re: intervalometer on 550D

There are two ways that you can create timelapse without shutter movement. One is to use FPS override and drop fps to create a TL movie. The other is to use silent picture feature which uses LV buffer data to create an image. They both have pros and cons. Check out the manual and this forum for info.

Great job. Beautiful timelapses and I really like the transitions between days. NYC is freaking awesome and your video makes me want to go there now. Thanks for sharing.

There are 3 posts that anyone who uses ML should read. They were posted in late summer 2012 by bart and I think they give excellent instruction on some key features.

You can view them from the Home page and there are links to each there. Also they can be seen in the forum Article Discussions.

There are articles for vectorscope, fast op with shortcuts, new fast zebras. You can and should be using these features whether shooting video or photo or at least know they are there and know how to use them. If you have already read them, go read them again.

For those of you out there that have installed but not yet read any of the documentation. READ IT and you will be much happier, much sooner with your decision to use ML on your expensive Canon camera. The manuals are included and can be read on your LV screen. No computer needed, but reading glasses may be required for old people like me. Also ML provides on-screen LV feedback to the user, such as comments and color changes to guide you when you get confused. (We have all been there.)
Happy Shooting!

Here are exact details
Manual Mode
Tv( Shutter Speed )   1/1000
Av( Aperture Value )   4.0
Metering Mode   Evaluative Metering
ISO Speed   200
Lens   EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Focal Length   65.0mm x1.6

Frame Diff, Trigger level 8 and above. Manual preset focus. Using auto focus results were unsatisfactory, at least with that lens and situation. I was overall very pleased with the motion detect capabilities.

Giving the user documentation a good read will help with not knowing about how ML works. If the problem is sticky halfshutter then you can nav to Prefs>Misc key settings and change it there.

Here are samples of motion detect images that ML captured using my 600D. Southern Colorado near Pueblo. Lots of cacti and scrub brush where I was staying at an off the grid cabin where my friends live. Setup to capture birds drinking in their bird bath and got some interesting images. Here are a couple that show common Robins, a thrush.

I like the shots overlooking the street from above and they really suit the tilt-shift feeling. You did not mention a tilt-shift lens so I assume the tilt shift is AE post work. It is effective in tricking the brain to misinterpret the scale, particularly of the high shots. Which is always fun to watch.

My philosophy on giving criticism is to never discourage anyone. Artistic and personal expression should always be encouraged. Art that I think sucks may be a great inspiration to someone else. I love to watch forum member videos and I would never want to have shruggyrasklat discouraged from uploading his next video due to rude remarks from this forum.  +1 for nanomad's comment.

While albert-e came across rather harsh, I think the take away from his comment is that as a viewer of this video he was very distracted by the focus issues. As a producer of content you should always try to avoid pulling the viewer away from the presentation. There is a threshold point at which the viewer begins thinking about some technical issue (focus, framing, audio problems, etc) instead of keeping their attention on the content being presented. Once that occurs the viewer may lose interest very quickly.

Feature Requests / Rack Focus - More than one focus rack?
November 26, 2012, 07:52:18 PM
I could not find any discussions or requests for this rack focus modification. Would it be possible to allow more than one configuration of  focus start/end points for rack focus? Maybe break out rack focus menu to allow to choose 1,2 or 3 rack focus setups and then config each setup start/end point with ability to set a delay between each rack focus action. This could be used for a complex shot to hit sharp focus as an actor hits their mark, moves to a new mark and still end up with sharp focus on actor and then allow focus on addl feature or actor as the shot continues.

For what I described above, say for a 2 rack focus setup the second rack start point would be the first rack focus end point.

The options would be something like this

# of racks

rack 1 start/end points with existing delay and step setup
-delay between rack 1 and rack 2 actions

rack 2 start/end points with existing delay and step setup
-delay between rack 2 and rack 3 actions

rack 3 start/end points with existing delay and step setup

I like the idea of using the rack focus during a handheld shot. You did a great job on cam stability with no rig. Keep up the creative work.

The nifty 50 looks good but I kept saying to myself "Focus" due to a lot of content was really out of focus. Maybe that was your intent. If it was not then look into focus peaking, one of the best features ML has to offer. I think that the shallow depth of field did help with the ethereal 'Fripp-style' music and the slow camera motion was effective.

What was used to record audio that was heard in the final video?
