Shot a card full of 50p / 960 / 3x3, 113 at the beach and unfortunately every clip has a tearing across the top of the frame :-(

This was processed in cr2hdr 4k and it is the April 06th build. I have live view set to real time if that makes a difference..

https://vimeo.com/212739433

Edit: I also kept getting error messages. Recording with the error log still on the screen resulted in the old 1.67x stretch slow motion clips.

@beauchampy

Same for me, but the same thing happens to me with older (and more stable) builds... To get hdmi signal I often go to play button and back out again. In my case using a Zacuto EVF.

I get continuous recording with april6th build with ISO100 1920x960 50p GD off 14bit losseless with or without hdmi in 5Dmk3 113.

I didn't have much problem with previous builds. Might be because right now I'm using a Leica prime with no electronics, so that might be throwing things off a bit (camera probably thinking a lens not attached).

Just tried 50p and yes, getting continuous at a steady 79MB/s @ ISO 100, 14-bit lossless with HDMI, GD off.

Bit weird how the 60p mode seems to have a much lower MB/s (57MB/s with HDMI, 67MB/s without), so I'm guessing its something a little more complex than just write speed which is the issue there. a1ex / devs  if I can help test in any way, please do let me know.

Off to Bermuda tomorrow, so I'll do some more testing of this mode there. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Just testing April 6th build on 123 with HDMI.

First up, it's a bit sketchy getting signal from the HDMI - have to power on, go into Canon menu, back out again, screen flashes all kinds of weird, live view then appears. First time I tried the camera crashed.

Second up, only getting 7 seconds at 1920x800 60p, GD off, 14-bit lossless, ISO 100. Data rate is low - only about 57mb/s

Just pulling out the HDMI getting 15 seconds. Data rate is more like 67mb/s.

Strange how plugging in the HDMI seems to lower the data rate by 10mb/s?

Thanks so much @Danne

Not sure if its me, the new crop module, or cr2hdr but my first test of 1920x1080 48p resulted in pink clipped highlights.

Here's an example of what it looks like upon running this beautiful hack via LiveView from 5D3 below and watch what happens when I push it up to ISO 800 (and higher) towards the end:

I cant seem to get that lovely liveview on 113. Mine is low fps, desaturated and choppy.
Running crop_rec_4k.2017.Apr03.5D3113 and I copied your settings..

You could try to bypass the enclosure yes. The problem could be there. Wish you best of luck!

Unfortunately, most modern 2.5" external drives now come with the drive attached to the PCB, it's a bit of a nightmare if one fails.

@ johannsebastianbach It may sound obvious and stupid, but have you tried a different USB cable? I've often found using a cable which is too long on a portable drives means there are power issues.

Hey a1ex! Really nice job! I'm still wrapping my head around all these incredible developments.

Questions about the lossless compression - it says compressed with Canon lossless JPEG, but this is still raw, right? How does the information differ to the normal 14-bit raw files?

Build for 5d3 available? I just spent a week shooting 50p 3x: so would love to put it through its paces
#59
Please guys, I can't take the heart ache. Is this an April fools? Specifically the 960px 3x3?

@a1ex @danne

Just to clarify. What should the black and white levels be for a) true colour representation and b) maximum dynamic range on the 5d3?
#61
@Danne I've been trying to find out more information for black level / white level on the 5d3. I recently forced white level to 1163 using cr2hdr (is that your app btw!?). Can it be pushed around even more for increased dynamic range?

atleast 4 footage gets corrupted out of 10 with wrong black level.  im using 70D

I'm using cr2hdr which enables you to specify a black level. Not sure what it is on the 70D but on my 5D3 I'm using 2048.

I do have the odd clip here and there with strange pink highlight clipping. I had also specified a white level of 1163.

Raw Video / Re: Premiere pro plugin for mlv

The original idea behind MLVFS was to be a sort of generic, next-best-thing to a native plugin (read the "Original Post" section at the bottom of the first post).

I don't know about anyone else, but I find MLVFS far too slow for real world usage inside an NLE.

Just came back from Malta filming a client piece entirely using 12bit and 3x3 50p. Flying by the seat of my pants, but the footage is lovely and not a single corrupt frame (5d3). I'll post some results next week. As far as I am concerned, this is more than ready for commercial use IMO.

Hello, has anyone got any tips for converting 12bit MLV (as well as 50/60p 3x3) to DNG?

Canon 5D3 1.1.3

Anyone researched and found an optimal method? Preferably mac friendly.

Raw Video / Start / Stop raw with IR remote
March 09, 2017, 06:15:37 PM
So I have a Canon RC-6 and been experimenting using it as a record trigger on my rig.

I can get it to start / stop H264 no problem by mapping the record button to the shutter button.

With raw, I can get it to start no problem. But I cannot get it to stop recording. Not even pressing the button on the back of the camera will stop, the camera just keeps rolling.

Any ideas?

I don't understand what the problem is?

I have a little IR remote control and use it to start and stop RAW recording. What am I missing here?

I can get my recording to start, but I cant get it to stop.. What's your secret?

(Not using this module by the way, just got it working with the Canon settings)

Hey butch, thanks so much for taking the time to process and upload that video. It's so useful to hear in a real world test on the same camera.

It sounds fantastic, however there does seem to be a lot of that 5D preamp noise in there. What was the gain set to in the canon menu, and did you have the gain boost switch activated on the MKE 440?

It's almost there. I'm wondering if an in-line preamp could help somewhat.

I carry the 5d iii and a Sennheiser MKE 440 most everywhere I go. It's a great little mic. Bought it for $100 off a few months ago.

Just listened to some samples.. That thing is amazing! It's a perfect stereo / shotgun hybrid. Anything online you've used it for?

Hardware and Accessories / 5d III compact on camera audio
February 23, 2017, 06:46:33 PM
Anyone have any suggestions for a compact on-camera microphone setup?

Currently I use a Rode NTG-2, Sound Devices Mix Pre-D, but all this is a bit much for a handheld setup.

Any really good compact shotgun style mics that play well with the (mediocre) preamp in the 5d3?

Sorry to ask, but any chance you´ll be able to make it available for OSX El Capitan (10.11.6)? I can´t upgrade any of my computers to Sierra due to software and plugins I use for work that isn´t compatible with Sierra yet, and would love to try out this new seemingly awesome conversion software for Magic Lantern you´ve created :)

+1 I was just about to ask exactly the same question..

This is amazing! I can finally do away with my Ninja Blade for a backup recording and switch to something like a smallhd 502.

I haven't tested yet, but does it work with MLV and audio?

Really amazing! Looks incredibly organic for a digital image - your image processing is lovely.

I've followed you on twitter, check out some of my stuff here (99% 5d3 raw), I'm also in London, always on the look out for shooters / collaborators - www.paulbeauchamp.co.uk
