Looks amazing mate. You should create an edit with just the double exposure effects - really nice!
How did you grade?

Also a fellow Toro Y Moi fan ;-)

Care to share your workflow used in this? 48p or 50p? Did you also use an UV or any kind of Filters?

Hey man, shot it 50p. Only filter I used was a Hoya Variable ND.

Workflow:
1. DNG into Resolve, create proxy
2. Edit in Premiere
3. XML back to Resolve
4. Process all clips as regular BMD film // sharpness at 25
5. Most clips simply have Film Convert on the first node using the 5d3 BMD Film ML RAW camera profile & FJ Velv 100 stock // grain around 30 // Saturation slightly bumped
6. Adjust highlight / shadows / exposure in camera raw settings for each clip.
7. Finish in Resolve (I don't go back to Premiere / FCP) export as ProRes 422HQ
8. Encode H264 using Handbrake & upload to Vimeo

sweet. vikken framerate, kamera, upplösning?
jag får alltid riktigt bad aliasing med 650d men ser ingen aliasing i dina videos? har för mig du kör med en 70d men det är väl typ samma sensor som en 650d?

I use a 5d mk3 - there's hardly any aliasing on this camera, but there is some when recording 50/60p

Some more tests using this lens (nothing too exciting but a great location)

Since 2/4/2016 I use the crop version of ML for 5dmk3 1.1.3

I was shooting lately and because my prime lens wasnt close enough, I used the traditional crop recording.
I noticed that it recorded 30FPS rather than 25FPS.
Is it a bug ?

It does that for me too.. I have to use FPS override to correct.

Got the camera in manual mode?
#106
According to Canon rumours, this camera is out there in the wild being beta tested already.

As soon as it hits the stores, what needs to happen in order for it to be in the hands of ML Devs?

Do we need to set up a fund in order to buy a unit? I would gladly donate to support.

For my own sanity here.. When you say the footage is "confirmed" to 24 frames.. Is it slowed down, or no? I can't tell and it's driving me insane

Conformed. Shot at 37fps and it's playing back at 23.976, ie it's been slowed down.

Really nice.

I've been thinking this for a while that it's funny how slightly over-cranked footage looks "normal" speed to my eyes now and straight 23.976 looks almost too jarring - too "documentary" almost. It gives it a nicer look IMO when it's slightly over-cranked I think, but not so slow that it doesn't look real - if that makes sense?

@DeafEyeJedi I'm sure there must be some post color work on that footage. Surely. Perhaps Mr. @beauchampy can shed some light on his color settings? :-)

Funny you say that, I'm not too sure how I feel about 37fps.. It doesn't feel all that different to 24p. I think I might rather just lose a bit of vertical resolution and shoot 50/60p.

I also cranked the shutter a bit too high in some of these shots.

Colour is Film Convert. FJ Velv 100 with a little tweak here and there.

I have been off forum for a while - has there been any progress with identifying the source of pink glitches and whether it has been solved?

I have downgraded to the old 2014 version and that works flawlessly so far.

We discovered it was the debug logging in the mlv_rec module that was causing it. It's been disabled in 1.1.3 since April 10th I think. There's still no 1.2.3 build that doesn't glitch post August 2014.

Nice! What card did you use?
With sandisk extreme pro 160mb/s, sound off, global draw off and 2,35:1 aspect ratio i can record 20 seconds of 37fps (5d3, 1.1.3). 9 seconds is with 2:1 aspect ratio.

Interesting.. I use a KB 128gb 1066x, but I have GD on and I also use the HDMI (I kinda shoot from the hip, monitor facing up, medium format style).. I'm on the latest 1.1.3 I'll have to experiment with turning off GD.

Canon 5d3, adapted Leica Summilux E55 50mm f1.4
Magic Lantern RAW @ 37fps.

Canon Menu 30p
FPS override 37fps
Conformed to 23.976
Gets you about 9 seconds of Raw without any stretching.

I bought a bmpcc last year and sold out after using for few days since it doesnt perform well in low light and i dint like that crop sensor.

you really need the speedbooster

Hey beauchampy,

I really enjoyed watching your video. Amazing detail, and makes me so psyched to be using a 7D for raw video. Great colors and use of Filmconvert as well. Quick question: Do you find a major difference between DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro CC 2015/After Effects CC 2015 for color grading? I imagine this question must get asked a lot, however I'm curious about what your opinion is. Personally, round tripping from Adobe to Resolve I've read and heard can be a pain, but if there's a significant difference it may be worth it. The skin tones were really good in this video by the way. Oh, one more question: Did you Denoise in DaVinci Resolve or use Neat Video or some kind of denoise software? It looks like controlled lighting so I wasn't sure if you did or not. Thanks.

- Paul Harwood

No problem Paul. My limited experience using DNGs inside of Premiere Pro has not been a good one. Pink highlights, ugly colours.. just blergh! I always round trip using Resolve. Once you have it down, it's fairly easy to do. The interview lighting was controlled  (a couple 4-bank fluorescents) but I do de-noise using Neat Video inside Resolve as part of the colour grading process if I need to.

I can tell you that I regularly use the 7d as a B cam to the 5d3 (both RAW).

Go to 0:23 on this video. You'll see three different angles of the interviewee one after another. Two of them are 5d, one of them is 7d. I bet you can't tell which is which..
https://vimeo.com/147846442

Now, onto your question. I haven't got a BMPCC, however I have extensively graded footage shot raw from that camera and used it in a project mixed with 5d3 raw. I can tell you a few things.
- In terms of resolution, the upscaled 7d RAW looks marginally worse than a native 1920x1080 frame, however it still looks fantastic. Nothing to worry about there.
- Both the 7d and BMPCC suffer from similar amounts of moire in RAW, maybe the 7d a fraction more.
- The dynamic range from the BMPCC really shines above and beyond the 5d3. I also find I can recover more dynamic range from the 5d3 raw compared to the 7d raw, so that's definitely something to take into account.
- IMO the BMPCC is closer to the 5d3  (but as I said, but with greater DR, noisier and suffers from mild moire)

For the difference in price between the BMPCC + Speedbooster compared to what you can pick up a used 7d for, it does make sense to get a 7d (especially if you're basing it on how many pixels you get for your buck). However, I would say the incredible dynamic range of the BMPCC puts it into another league.

Quite like the 16-35 f4 IS on my 5d3. IS helps a lot and the lens is sharp as f.

For people out there getting corrupt frames. The earliest 1.2.3 build I can find that doesn't produce corrupt frames is August 7th 2014.

In this build, debug logging had not yet been implemented in mlv_rec. Since, then corrupt frames are fairly rife in my experience, especially when shooting 50/60p.

The latest versions of 1.1.3 are clean as debug logging was disabled again since April 10th 2016.

I've done loads of testing to indicate debug logging is the primary cause of this issue.

I'm wondering if we can see a new 1.2.3 build with debug logging disabled in mlv_rec?

Until now I've been shooting on Canon L glass (24-70, 24-105, 16-35, 70-200 etc).

Just wondered if anyone has been experimenting with Leica-R, Contax or Zeiss primes?

I've just bought a Summilux-R 50mm 1.4, but I'm waiting on an adapter.

Would be interested to see this combo in action. Show me your work!

Thanks

Shot this on my tod using a 5d3 and a 24-105 (mostly). Any questions, let me know :)
EDIT: Apologies, I put this in the wrong section of the forum, if someone could move it to the "share your work" bit that would be cool.

Why you don't downgrade to 1.1.3 ?

The achilles heel of 1.1.3 is the lack of clean HDMI output. Most of the time, it's fine and it works just great. However when you have a series of interviews lined up and you don't want to risk it all on a single Komputerbay CF card and the intricacies of RAW recording, you just gotta have that Atomos backup.

Any one who can make a new 5d3 1.2.3 build?

I will be happy to test it out

Me too, I'm dying for a 123 with the raw recording fixes..
#121
For those wondering about where the fix is with the nightlies, it was fixed in the April 11th 2016 build for 113 (see point 4)
https://builds.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/job/5D3.113/394/

@a1ex - I've got a gig coming up this week where I need to run my Atomos for backup (i.e. I need clean HDMI). Can I just copy the mlv_rec from the fixed 113 build and use that with the latest 123 build? Or is there a new 123 nightly in the works which addresses the pink frame bug?

Thnx

Here's a thought.. How about incremental stepping crop?

Could you map it so we can choose 1.1x, 1.2x, 1.3x, 1.4x......... 2x.... 3x....

Effectively we could just bang on a wide-ish lens and have a multitude of different focal lengths to choose from?

This would be amazing, I'm shopping for Leica glass at the moment and effectively turning the 35mm into a 50mm too would save me a lot of ££

@beauchampy What do you mean by modified? Is there a thread here in the forum I can start reading about how to "modify"? Or is this something you are doing independently? Thanks for all your help!

a1ex modified mlv_rec to disable the logging. It seems to have fixed the pink frames issue. The link to the modified module is in my previous post. Just replace it in your modules folder.

Not sure if this is reflected in the nightlies yet.
