Watched it twice. Artistically I like it.

Technically: It doesn't pop.  I think the contrast could use some adjustments... and the colors just kind of mush together. But I think with some adjustments it could be beautiful.

You should always post the specs for the video you shoot. At least what kind of camera, lens, and what kind of raw.
#29
Specs?  Camera... lens... resolution you were filming at... output resolution... all that nice stuff. :)

You probably need to have the latest version of the .NET frame work installed.

Well I'm just saying I haven't seen any practical applications for this 2k video. Everything's just like the 2.5k on the clip you linked to: Short clips... tests... sometimes flowers.

But I have yet to see a short film shot in 2k or anything practical.  A seen with dialogue... a chase seen... Something that's more than 4 seconds long. And if you're talking about a used 5D mk II you have to compare it to a used GH4. (Because new, and body only, they cost the same... or the 5D is more.)

Back on the topic of full frame though... I have APS-C lenses and I'm looking to get either a 5D MK II or a 6D.  I know the 30mm 1.4 will have vignetting... but if I'm using crop mode anyway... which would you recommend? the mk II for the CF card or the 6D for the low light? Don't the both do 2k?

And am I right that using crop mode will negate the vignetting anyway?

Raw Video / Re: Big problem with 5D MARK 3

Well he should be able to get by with at least the 41mbs he was getting before with just about any decent Compact Flash. I don't think he's trying to pull 1920x1080 in RAW or anything...

You get what you pay for... There's always the 5D3... or the GH4... or the A7S...

In that case: WHIMSICAL MUSIC! :)

Put either the Ringling Bros. music or the theme song to The Jeffersons behind him and you're all good!

There are some issues there...

1. You should have used a lavalier: There's noticeable echo coming from whatever mic you're using. a lapel mic would've been closer to the subject's mic. Failing that you could've had him handhold a dynamic mic.
2. Poor use of lighting. His points are valid but he comes off looking like a cheap crook. Since this is obviously a run-and-gun thing you could've had a simple led off to one side, or since there was ample street lighting you could've gotten away with a reflector.
3. Very, very soft focus.
4. Shaky image. Obviously if the option were available you would've used a tripod, but even without one you could use the image stabilization feature in your NLE to just crop out some of the image and keep what's in the middle.

Not trying to come off as harsh... but if someone's political career is on the line, it might be worth telling him that he'd be better off reshooting.

Levas: Why doesn't it work?  Can Alex update it for you?

Anyway I'm getting bored with my 600D. I can get a 6D or a 5D MK II either one for about 900 bucks.

I'm leaning towards a 6D because I shoot a LOT in low light and I could do more with the higher ISOs. What's giving me pause is the lack of a CF slot and the 40mb limit.

So according to your chart Levas the 6D can basically handle just above 720p for continuous shooting... but even with the 5D2 you can't really get 1080p unless you're in crop mode. So should I just ignore the whole Compact Flash thing and go for the 6D? Or is there another reason I would want to get the 5D2?

Raw Video / Re: ML RAW reflections 5D3

Great work!

I've spent the whole week shooting and editing on the GH4 and A7S  and it's REALLY hard for me to get back into the RAW workflow now. (Especially with SLOG2 and XAVC being what they are.)

It would be very different if more NLEs just accepted the .RAW and .MLVs directly... or simply read them as CinemaDNGs.

That said the 5D3 squashes BOTH of them in terms of simply being a camera. But gets squashed in every way that counts when it comes to video.

It's painful that there is no all-purpose solution. GH4 only works well up to ISO 1600, A7S shoots photos at like 2 frames a second max, 5D3 is limited to a little more than 1080p unless you want to go into crop mode... and still the video doesn't come out as sharp as the other two.

What are your plans for the future? Waiting on the 5D4 or are you going to go with one of these other options?

Oh lorenzo... you're so french! :p

Yeah just stop in a Fnac or something and grab a Compact Flash card and you'll be GOLDEN.

QuoteHere is the kind of test I am after, it shows that the Tokina can be used fully in 5D Mark II crop mode (which can be 2k no less so this will be a low-light super 16mm, something the GH3/4 aren't!!!).

You're kidding yourself...

You can stick any kind of lens you want on the 5D Mark II (and even the 5D Mark III) and the GH4 will still kick the shit out of it.

I say that as a Canon Magic Lantern user on THIS forum...

I've spent the past month writing an article on the future of photography. I've had a range of Cameras (5D II, 6D, 7D, GH4, A7S) at my disposal all week long. To my eyes there's absolutely no difference between the 24-70 on a 5D II and the standard 12-35 on the GH4... until you go into video mode.  At which point? GAME OVER.

Ted's video is nice... but the quality in crop mode is really suffering. Versus something like this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH5fafQQddg

As a photographer the 6D and D750 are the most comfortable cameras I've ever held in my hand. And they both have excellent low-light performance and you can get away with a lot more than you can with the 5D MK II.  But as a videographer... there's nothing any camera on the market can do... particularly in daylight... that the GH4 can't. (Once you get above 1600 ISO it's a whole new ballgame... but I digress.)

The newer Sigma 30mm 1.4 A1 fits as well: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1220042/0

The old one also fits... but with vignetting, so you'd have to crop it afterwards.

And yes... you should ALWAYS buy 3rd party APSC lenses. Or just don't buy APS-C lenses at all since you know you'll be stepping up to full frame eventually and L lenses work just fine on APS-C cameras. (Really kicking myself for not buying a 24-105L when they were on sale for 500 bucks...)

Really, really beautiful... What lenses were you using?

Was this in RAW?

Wow... We like BOTH need an A7S :p

And I take it the cat never uses that scratching post?

What lenses did you use?

This was extremely beautiful and a superb, top-notch job editing.

I couldn't help but notice some soft focus in some scenes... I'm starting to think that it's just something that happens with the 6D because of only having that one... center-weighted cross-type focus point. So a lot of your static subjects look great, but anything that moves even slightly (like people's heads) is a little soft in focus. I've spent the whole week shooting 4k on the GH4 and A7S... so the difference with the 6D is quite shocking now.

That said a guy online was selling his 6D with a 24-105 lens and I'm really ALL OVER that if he gets back to me.

I really hope Canon does something drastic with it's next generation of cameras though. A 6D mk ii with 50 cross-type focus points or a 5D mk IV with 4k non-external is just the shot in the arm that Canon needs...

Nothing in this video is "sharp".

What lens were you using?

It's very... very strange. It seems like in every scene... there was just absolutely nothing sharp. It almost makes me wonder if you softened the clarity in post or something?

How is it *I* don't have a 5D3...? Are they cheaper in Cambodia?  Do I have to go down there and work for a couple of weeks? Are they paying photographer's like 2000 euros an hour in Cambodia?

Because I can assure you: I'm doing something wrong... :)

Read some books, take some Omega 3 tablets, eat one pear a day... It all helps!  ;)

Funny coincidence.  I just saw an old silent movie by Erick von Stroheim called "Blind Husbands" that was filmed exactly there in the Dolomites.

It was a tribute to Sepp Innerkofler... one of the Austrian heroes of World War I.

That mountain you show is also where he died. (I'm sure you must've seen some plaques about him around town.)

Meh... Can't watch Northrup videos.  To me he looks and sounds exactly like "Roger" from American Dad.

...too distracting.

I'll be curious about seeing ML on this camera though... It really seems to do a lot of things better than the 7D Mk II...

Well this is it... I told you guys that I'd been working on a Kickstarter campaign this whole time.  Well it's finally here.  I wasn't able to do nearly as much of it in RAW as I'd have liked due to time constraints... and for reasons that are pretty obvious, I had to switch (sell one, buy another) microphones in the middle of production and deal with shipping delays... but this is the long-promised Kickstarter video.

Equipment: Magic Lantern Nightly (one of the March builds)
Canon 600D
Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens
Canon 55-250 lens (MKI i believe)
DSLR Controller AP
TP-LINK TL-MR3040 Portable Router (to give my 600D wi-fi)
Veedion shoulder Rig
Rode VideoMic Pro (sold in the middle of the project).
Rode NTG2 (wish I started the project with this.)
Sony PCM-M10 Field Recorder (Best in the bidness.)
Elinchrom D-Lite 4 400 watt lights

Probably all kinds of other stuff... there was a LOT that went into the making of this project.

If you're interested in checking out the project itself... just follow this link:
