I really enjoyed this. You did a really good job. In what area was this shot? The scenery is beautiful.

I just updated to the Jan 27 ML nightly build for the 5Diii with the MLV_SND module. Everything seems to be working well so far except for one thing:

When recording MLVs (Global Draw ON, all modes; Global Draw Disable OFF), I have the crop overlays, audio meters, raw histogram, etc. available to me when I first turn the camera on. But as soon as I start recording a clip, they disappear, and they do not reappear when I stop recording. I have to turn the camera off and then on again to get them back. Anyone know what is going on?

I can confirm that this was not an issue with the Jan 7 nightly build that I was running before I updated.

UPDATE: I've been able to resolve this. Turns out that I had my card on write protect, so it was reverting to my old settings every time that I turned it off. Unlocking it, turning Global Draw ON, Liveview seemed to address the issue.

The inexpensive Tascam DR-40 has an auto-start feature: http://dms.sjmc.umn.edu/Equipment_Guides/Deck_Guides/Tascam%20DR40%20Manual.pdf

Look at page 62. Haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it would work.

Okay, I've tried this out and it sort of works with the DR-40. The device (set to "Mark", not "Rec") can be triggered to start when there is a sound that exceeds -48db (which ML will produce if the speaker volume is set at 5), and then the user would have to stop it manually. The problem is that there is no way to isolate the sources. So, if your boom mic was to bump something, or there was any kind of loud noise at all, the recorder would interpret it as a signal to begin recording.

Is there crazy flickering during the recording though?

I wasn't sure so I tried it. No flickering, but the image expanded vertically, losing my anamorphic crop, and the frame rate got really chuggy. Also, the camera dropped frames within three or four seconds, which has never happened to me when shooting at this resolution (1600x1200).

I have tried the grayscale preview mode, but the image doesn't expand to fill the LCD and it introduces some crazy flickering.

As a frequent anamorphic shooter, I am thrilled that the ML team has included the capability be able to shoot raw 4:3 footage with an anamorphic lens and view it with the anamorphic viewing feature. The only improvement that I hope to see is this: right now, my 4:3 footage with anamorphic viewing switched on takes up about the middle third of the screen. Would it be possible to have the image automatically stretch to fill the screen when shooting in anamorphic viewing? This would allow for easier focusing.

Thanks!

Thank you, I will try these out. I have decided to return the 128GB card. It keeps dropping frames. With the current B&H promotion, I can buy a pair of Lexar 64GB 1000x cards for about the same price that I paid for the 128GB, and I'll be able to take advantage of the warranty. These smaller cards seem to be more reliable.

Also, thank you for working so hard to organize the content on these boards. It would be pretty impossible to find anything if not for your efforts.

Thanks, RenatoPhoto. My 128GB card seems to only be able to do 86.6MB/s at 4096K buffer. I wonder why it is so slow...

I looked at everything that you recommend, and the only thing I needed to change was photo quality (S3 to Raw). At least now it appears that I can record continuously without problems (even though it indicates that I am recording at 91MB/s). It is strange to me that the benchmark numbers do not seem to have much effect over continuous recording.

I have a 5D Mark III at home running the August build (I will refer to it as "Home 5D") and a 5D Mark III at work running the June build ("Work 5D").

I have disabled all modules except raw_rec from both cameras in case they are slowing write speeds. Global Draw is off on both cameras. Through the Canon menu, I have selected S3 as the photo size. LiveView is forced to be always on. Both are set up to record 1920x1080 24fps raw (not MLV). Cards are formatted in-camera (I have also tried formatting them in ExFAT on my Mac, but the write speeds do not seem to show any difference).

For my Home 5D, I have a single Lexar 128GB 1000x CF card (purchased used) that benchmarks at 81.21MB/s. It drops frames almost immediately after hitting the record button. However, the Work 5D benchmarks it at 72.39MB/s, but it can record continuously with this card. How can this be?

Also, I have four Lexar 64GB 1000x CF cards (purchased brand new from B&H) for the Work 5D. They all benchmark between 70.98MB/s and 72.41MB/s on the Work 5D, which seems quite slow for these cards. And yet I have been able to record continuously on them with the Work 5D at 1080P 24fps. Also odd: on the Home 5D, they benchmark at about 10MB/s faster, and allow for continuous recording.

I am very confused. Can someone please shed some light on this?

I haven't seen much about the Lexar 128GB 1000x cards, probably because they are incredible expensive. But they might be worth saving up for if they are headache-free like the 64GB cards. Has anyone been shooting raw with these successfully?

Not sure why, but I just tried it on my home iMac and it worked. I guess that third time's the charm!

On the computer that it did not work on, are you running mountain lion? If so, you have to install some script in order for macboot to work. Took me a while to figure this out.

I have tried this on two different Macs now, both running Mac OSX Lion (not Mountain Lion). I also tried the .command file as well to see if that would give me a different outcome, but it didn't.

I am having a similar problem, but mine isn't an issue of the card reader because I have had the same result putting the cards directly into my computer (and someone else's computer) as well as a separate card reader plugged into that computer. None of the cards has the write protect enabled and each has been formatted in the 5Diii.

I am running OSX Lion (so no additional .command file necessary) but MacBoot is not able to recognize any SD card that I have. I have now tried two 32GB SDHC cards and one 64GB SDXC card, but the result is the same every time. I have even tried a fast 1000x Lexar CF card that I intend to record to but I get the same thing; I get "There are no suitable cards" every time.

However, MacBoot what does recognize is the cheap flash drive that I have plugged into another USB port.

Does anyone have any ideas about other things that I could try?

Thanks.
