Are you sure you're testing the correct CF card and not the SD card?

I thought CFast 2.0 was a completely different format which was not compatible with traditional CF controllers.

I wouldn't expect it to be supported by any of the existing cameras, maybe the 5DmkIV.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Resolve 10 beta is out
September 16, 2013, 06:08:52 PM
If anyone is curious, it seems like Resolve 10 has simplified the method of sharpening only luma channel while leaving the chroma alone. It used to be that you had to insert a parallel node and adjust the settings, but now it seems like you can set up a node to only affect the luma channel in a YUV mode.

Neat!

To me, the Magic Lantern raw development is a major game changer, almost as much as  the ability for the 5D2 to shoot video in the first place. It elevates the video quality of these cameras to the levels of RED and Alexa while adding virtually nothing to the cost besides faster CF cards.

So I'm left wondering why either the complete lack of interest on the part of the official press, or at most a superficial interest ripe with mistakes and misinformation? Digital Video Magazine has yet to make any mention of this, Phil Bloom seems to have made a minor acknowledgment and then never mentioned it again, nothing really from the likes of Vincent Laforet or Shane Hurlbut who up until now have been champions of DSLR shooting.

Yeah....head scratcher!

Raw Video / Re: Stupid question: RAW and HDMI
September 16, 2013, 06:52:44 AM
The guys who created Magic Lantern are a group of extremely brilliant individuals, and it always seems like when someone posts some "duh" question like this, they're not giving them an ounce of credit for already having thought up the idea...in this case many months ago.

This has been thoroughly explored, discussed, and tried...the result is that it's simply not possible with the current knowledge of the chips inside the 5D due to the CPU simply not being fast enough to process the data and convert it for HDMI (which doesn't allow raw data to be simply passed through).

Raw Video / Re: MAC - raw2dng vs RAWMagic
September 15, 2013, 03:43:32 AM
RAWMagic is what I've been using for a long time and I've never had any problems with it. It's crazy fast at converting and it's also very stable. I've never had any issue with it not recognizing footage, camera type, resolution or even converting those pesky files cut short by running out of space on my card.

raw2dng on the other hand one time completely deleted my footage, so that was the end of me using it although I might have to revisit it if RAWMagic doesn't get an update to read .mlv files soon.

Look in the Hardware Section, there are so many threads on this topic.

Exactly, even the current crop of 1200X or 1050X cards aren't reaching their top speeds on the 5D3.

Turns out it's not the card...who knew?

Raw Video / Re: Mark III raw video lost?
September 12, 2013, 11:53:04 PM
...here's a theory:

What if the camera defaulted back to recording on the SD card instead of the CF card? Is it possible that your footage lives on the SD card instead of the CF card you thought you were recording to? This would totally make sense, assuming of course that you have 2 cards in the camera at the same time. I don't think the CF card would be able to record at a high enough data rate, unless you had enabled Skip Frames in which case it would keep on going and grab what it can grab.
#535
Lucky you that it happened this fast! Just send it back and get a replacement, should be ridiculously easy through either Amazon or KB directly.
#536
"SanDisk says that the new memory card provides minimum sustained write speeds of 65 MB per second"

Isn't that too slow for full HD raw capture?

Let us know what you did wrong when you figure it out. Sounds like user error.   ;D

(ok, that's a bit mean....but I honestly can't think of anything that would cause that. Did you re-format the card for the second day?)
#538
Regardless of what Canon literature says, this doesn't seem to be reflected in real-world tests. 1200X CF cards clock in higher than 100mb/sec write speeds with test apps when connected to a computer through a USB 3 CF reader, yet on the 5D3 they can't get anywhere close to that.

What is going on?

Question is... would it be possible to reencode in camera in
a new file fomat which is not exactly raw but better than h.264.
Something like 8-bit RAW instead of 14-bit RAW.
Simple to minimize the files size, so that Cameras like D60 could
record almost FullHD in "better than h.264" quality.

This has been discussed so many times, and answered. Please do a search before posting.

Raw Video / Re: Odd mirrored edge on 5D3 footage
September 11, 2013, 02:28:17 AM
Have you tried a newer ML release? The most current one (August 21) seems to work quite well.

Can't understand why so many people use releases from almost 3 months ago considering how things are getting fixed and updated almost on a daily basis.

Also, why are you shooting at 1928? Are you in crop mode? The sensor resolution is normally 1916 (1920 on the ML setting).

Or you can use Pluraleyes or Premiere Pro CC/   :P

Raw Video / Re: Raw goals for cinematography

Maybe he thinks that by posting here it will get more exposure...and he'd be right actually since I never have seen the other thread.

At any rate, I kinda find myself a bit in agreement here. Don't want to ruffle any feathers, and ultimately I will take what I can get and be extremely happy to boot. However I do see that there's a great deal of time and effort that's being put into some new functions, while some things might be getting a tad neglected.

For instance, dual-ISO is nice, but I think the 5D has already an awesome deal of latitude and personally I don't think the increased moire and extra post conversion step just to gain an extra couple of stops of dynamic range is necessary.

On the other hand, gaining audio back would be a huge positive even if all that we're going to use it for is as reference audio to make auto syncing external audio with Pluraleyes or Premiere Pro that much easier.

It would also be nice to switch to .mlv on all the builds. I feel that Adobe is not going to make any attempts at natively reading ML files in Premiere Pro until the new format is locked down...so the sooner the better IMHO.

I don't know if there's any additional optimization that can be done to make the writing speeds more solid. Right now they work fine on a decent CF card so I can't complain...but are they as good as they're going to get? More importantly, why aren't 1200X cards writing any faster than 1000X? Is this a Canon bottleneck or is there something that could be done? IMHO increasing the write speed even by a few megs would be considerably more desirable than card spanning which seems to add more complexity and more potential for file corruption.

And even though GUI and esthetics might seem like frilly things, I know more than a few DP's who don't want to use ML because they find the menus difficult to navigate.

I don't want to sound like I'm bitching, because I'm not. I'm a huge supporter and evangelist for ML...as a matter of fact I'm working to set up a live workshop here in L.A. to teach DP's how to work with ML raw.

However, I agree a bit with some of what the OP is saying. I think lately it feels like the developers are engaged in trying to figure out ways to squeeze more functionality out of the hardware which ultimately might or might not be as mission critical for real-life productions as they might think.

Just my $.02

Raw Video / Re: Odd mirrored edge on all 5D3 footage
September 10, 2013, 11:39:26 PM
What resolution are you shooting, what revision of the software are you using, what are you using to convert the files?

All this is basic required info if you expect answers.
#545
Topic has been discussed numerous times if you search.

Answer is no, can't mirror the display, best that you can do is lose the camera monitor and watch the image on the external one, not both. Even with that, it's not perfect and some people have been running into weird issues, but it's a hell of a lot more workable on the 5D3 than on the other cameras.
#546
It appears as if there is an unsurmountable write speed bottleneck in the cameras that an SSD drive option probably won't fix, particularly considering that 1200X cards don't seem to be able to reach speeds greater than what we can already get with 1000X cards.

Add to it the fact that there appear to be issues with cards larger than 128gb which might create problems with SSD drives, and the fact that 1050X 128gb cards are coming down in price considerably, and I would think that the whole idea of trying to add an SSD drive to the camera somehow becomes unnecessary.

Post-processing Workflow / Re: Upscaling Technique
September 09, 2013, 08:21:09 AM
Interesting, I assume picture 2 is the scaled one since it looks sharper?

I don't use Nuke, anyone care to explain how to achieve this in Resolve or AE?

Quote from: ted ramasola on September 01, 2013, 10:50:08 AMBenchmarks show similar results as 32 or 64 gig 1000x. The cameras seem to be the limiting factor.

Hello Ted,

If I am understanding this correctly, is 1000X speeds about as good as we're ever going to get on the 5Dmk3?

It seems like there is absolutely no advantage to 1200X cards, and even 1050X don't seem to be performing any better.

Komputerbay is releasing 1050X 64gig cards in November:

http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-Professional-COMPACT-FLASH-Extreme/dp/B00DQ8WOW0/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378623709&sr=1-4&keywords=64GB+1050X

Do you think these cards will provide any benefit whatsoever?

I ask because I think I want to buy a couple of additional CF cards (I already have 2 Komputerbay 64 1000X which I'm quite happy with) and I'm wondering if I should wait until November for the 1050X or if there's really no point based on your research.

Many thanks!

I am not using the ML raw on any paying job at the moment. But I don't want to make a huge investment in KB cards if they are unreliable.

Sigh....Komputerbay cards are not unreliable, but just like everything else you do get what you pay for. A Hoodman Steel card goes for about 3 times the cost of a Komputerbay card, my guess is that HS cards use 1st pick memory chips while Komputerbay gets the leftovers. They both offer limited lifetime warranties and if your card fails (or if you have issues with the write speed) within 30 days of purchase, Amazon will take care of exchanging it.

There are tons of people around here (myself included) who use Komputerbay cards on a regular basis with no problems whatsoever. Just like most flash-based memory (including SSD drives), they have a finite lifetime and will fail at some point in the future.

The question really comes down to how much money you can spend on cards?

For my needs and budget I'd rather own 3 KB cards than 1 HS card knowing that at least with the KB if one fails I still have the other two.

Komputerbay has benefitted a great deal from Magic Lantern raw, they have become the closest thing to an "official card of ML raw" as anyone can claim, and there are many positive reports of them bending over backwards to resolve customer issues. I would want to be more informed before jumping to conclusions based on a single post devoid of any details.

My understanding is that the 5D3 is a lot more stable with external monitoring than the 5D2.

Having said that, people do report some issues, particularly relating to crop marks.

At some point ML could be ported over to 1.2.1 which might possibly enable HDMI mirroring, but that is speculative at best and I certainly wouldn't plan on it to happen any time soon.
