Tragic Lantern / Re: Raw video on 50d and 40d
June 18, 2013, 05:49:40 PM
My 50D is fairly old in terms of production batch so there is no chance newer ones have it instead.
Also, i see no room for it either on the board.

I guess so but since it's not coming through the audio chip itself is going to be much harder, i guess.
The 5DII had to be Canon's first Video DSLR; the 50D would have sold a lot more in comparison to the former if it had all the feature they wanted to put into it maybe in the first stages of its development.
The FW is ready for the chip, the body too. Only the motherboard is missing the most important bit.

Audio stuff is all in there.. mic is not hooked up.. audio is ak4646. I was going to make it beep next... but battery died. i'll have to use AA's.

720P encoder mode is in there too but not sure if the video mode works... will have to try in C mode.
Don't be fooled by the FW because the 50D has got no audio chip, i pulled it apart until the motherboard and there is no sign of any audio processing stuff.
I know that the FW says you should have an Asahi Kasei chip but i still have my pics uploaded on the CHDK forum and you can clearly see there is nothing useful onboard.

Anyone tried Kingston Ultimate 600x 32GB ? The claim is it is 90MB/s write speed, the real life performance is more like 76 MB/s (http://www.gavtrain.com/?p=1831). I wonder how does it fair on 50D? It is on sale now here in Canada (Canada Computers, 60$).

Also - any more information regarding audio support in 50D on a hardware level? I saw it discussed here on page 50, with the statement that 50D seems to have the audio chip. If there is a way to simply solder in an audio in connector (to be used e.g. with Zoom H1 recorder) that would be super sweet.
There is no audio chip inside the 50D.

What about some good old RTFM or just the help feature?

Your 550D can only write 20ishMB/sec to the card so no matter how good your card is the SD card controller won't be fast enough to use the card up to its full potential.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!
June 14, 2013, 03:57:22 AM
@marekk:i in fact replaced every file but as another user reported i got err80. It's gone now so "who cares" :D
I tried to record at max raw resolution but i get pink frames and they are not aligned. Also, if i let the buffer fill up i get an error on the screen and the file does not get recorded. All in all i don't think i am going to use raw video that much, not unless it's 10 bit because it is a bit too hard to get the most out of it right now.
I appreciate the effort but it's not a feature for me :D

I am downloading the auto generated builds from the first post of the thread and i get error 80 whenever i try to load modules with the latest build. Anybody else has the same problem?

Also taking the camera outside or even picking it up in your hands vastly increases the chance of causing damage to it.
Seriously...

No, 60D is limited by its hardware and won't go past 20 MB/s anyway.

I just tried the build in the opening post and you tell me which 60D i got.
Looks like the biggest buffer is with S3 file size enabled only (any shooting mode, apparently) .
Not really into RAW if we can only get these sizes and i have to be on the computer for a good hour to edit the footage.
TO ME it isn't worth it, but i understand that some people see a huge potential (especially with other cameras, like the 50D i still have) .

Compared to.what? You got 14bit raw for stills already.

Very good thread.
I have been a huge supporter of ETTR during the years as it's another way of making the most out of our cameras.
@audionut: sorry for breaking the thread flow but apparently (from the cigarette package i see) you are from Australia.
What area?

ok, silent pic work but what is the deal with the burst rate?
I keep the button pressed and it is sooooo slow...

They are exactly the same camera except for one of the filters in front of the sensor (which allows the sensor to better "see" the light coming from the stars and the space in general) .

Delete it and recover it at home.
It's easy if you don't touch anything.

Archived porting threads / Re: canon 7d

Italiano?

Keep in mind that ML for the 7D does not set any bootflag for the moment and thus you have to do a FW upgrade everytime you switch the camera off and on.

But still, is it worth bumping up the CBR or the VBR value? For most users default is ok, some of us just want the ability to control P and I frames.

60D now, bought it last month.

Feature Requests / Re: Flash "Hypersync"

I'd think so, too (though I didn't try) - thanks, Canon ... and I'm pretty positive 1/200 x-sync on the 6d would work if 1/180s does, this seems to be marketing rather than tech.
That's just a safe margin.
Quickest shutter speed for the 20D was 1/250 but you can go up to 1/320 with a manual flash. Canon allows you one third of a stop less to stay in the safe zone, that's it. Anyway, one third of a stop will not make any huge difference.
High speed sync is something totally different and it requires the flash to be able to produce high frequency bursts to "follow" the shutter as it travels across the sensor.

No, it won't work.

Continuous.
As far as i can understand, FPS override is possible because timings are changed. That's what allows a longer continuous recording.
If you recorded all night at 0.5 fps then you know already :)
