Hi !

I'm just starting to play with raw video in my Canon 5D2 but need a little advice on post processing.

After converting the .dng to jpgs (or tifs), I'm importing "Image Sequence" into Apple Quicktime 7 and then saving .mov file. Problem is, the raw video looks great in the on screen QT viewer but loses quality when output / saved and compressed.

I'm editing in Apple Final Cut Pro X - so wonder if there is an easier / better way to process the raw video ?

I don't have Adobe After Effects or Premiere and would rather use the software I have if possible.

Any advice ?

Much appreciated  ... ;)

So just to summarise ...

When shooting raw video with Canon 5D2, is moire / aliasing better than h.264 video or worse (without any VAF5D2) ?

Are there any video resolutions that are best to reduce moire / aliasing ?

:)

Thanks Doyle4 ... thb, i can't see any difference  ;D

The latest variable buffer settings give much better recording duration so less of a problem now.

All we now gotta do is get rid of that damn moire ...  ;)

Ah ha ... the latest build 21.6.13 apparently uses a new way of buffering so my card can now give 15secs at 1880 x 1056 in 25fps.

Awesome work Magic Lantern ... Wasn't expecting such an impressive improvement.  ;D

Hi !

After a bit of general advice really ...

I've just started using ML raw process and it's amazing.

I'm in UK and normally shoot 25fps for PAL. However, with full 1880 x 1058 pixel HD and a fast KomputerBay 64Gb 1000x CF card, I'm hitting limitations on recording times.

The ML raw recording duration is obviously better with 24fps at this resolution.

This makes me tempted to shoot 24fps as opposed to my normal 25fps.

Most of my video is for the web, but if it were to be selected for tv broadcast, would 24 fps be much of a problem in UK or elsewhere ?

Just interested in advice please ... as every second counts at this high resolution raw !  :D

Alexcosy - is it 64Gb Komputer Bay 1000x or 128Gb ? The smaller capacity cards are apparently faster ...

Can we see some upscaled test footage from 1728 x 972 (16:9) to HD 1920 x 1080p Ted Ramosa ?

Can we .. can we ... pretty please ?! lol

Ideally with and without the Mosaic VAF-5D2 !  ;) I did buy one a few months ago but it had a tiny air bubble in the glass so sent it back. I also need to shoot stills and video so ultimately i'm living with the moire / aliasing for now ...

I've not installed the Raw update of ML just yet, waiting for all the little bugs to get ironed out on my 5D2. But getting very excited ...  ;D

Thanks A1ex for the info - not to mention all your hard work !

I've only just downloaded ML and am having a play. Once i get it working properly i'll be more than happy to make a gratuitous donation !  ;D

However, I'm in PAL land UK, if i want 25fps, 14bit continuous raw recording, can i set 1600 x 900 pixels in ML and upsize to standard 1920 x 1080 HD proportions ? I know it's not perfect but i'm guessing the quality will still be far superior to Canon h.264 Cinestyle video and my 5D2 is 5 years old  ! ;)

Is there still a 4Gb file limit for converting raw to dng with Macs ?

So for a 5D2, i just need a CF card that writes at 65mb/s - is there any size / make you would recommend ?

Is the ML current build pretty safe and useable now as i'm not much of a techie and not sure whether to wait a little longer ! ;D

That 'table' at the start of the thread is really very helpful and informative - but shame it's not a spread sheet that can be updated.

So can we just recap ...

What sort of performance and resolution can we expect from the 5D Mark II at 25 fps (i'm in PAL land UK) ?

Is it likely that the 5D Mark II will ever be able to deliver 1920 x 1080p 25 fps continuous raw in 14 bit ?

If not, when will we be likely to see it in 12 bit. I'm not sure there's that much difference between 12bit and 14bit - there certainly isn't a huge difference in stills between my 5D Mark I Classic (12bit) and my 5D Mark II (14bit).

The 'table' would also be really helpful if it suggested which cards are also recommend for each camera.

You guys at ML are so cool and we owe so much to you all. A big thanks ... I think we are ALL still amazed at how this raw feature is evolving.

A big thanks to all involved.  ;D

Hi !

I've been playing around with high speed fill flash sync outdoors in the sun to allow large apertures and shallow DOF. Perfect for fill flash portraits in full sun.

However, whilst my Canon 580EXII flashgun allows me to sync up to 1/8000 sec and at wide apertures like f2.8, the portable flash power limits the distance i can shoot to about 1 or 2 meters with 85mm lens on 5D2.

I realise ML can't increase the power of my flash gun (!), but if the shutter exposure was undertaken with electronics rather than focal plane would this effectively allow for increase in distance from hand held flash gun ? I'm guessing it could only be performed with mirror up or in live view mode, but could this work ?

I'm not 100% sure how the high speed sync feature works on my Canon flash gun, but i understand it's limited by the mechanical movement of the focal plane shutter.

Is this right ?

If ML can use electronic shutter (rather than mechanical focal plane shutter), could it effectively make our lenses leaf shutter lenses ? These are previously limited to the expensive world of medium format.

Perhaps somebody smarter than me can give me an answer or implement this as new feature in the awesome Magic Lantern firmware ?  ;D ::) :)

@ Peter Linov - Wow ! Those bugs are pretty scary and all hairy up close Peter !  ;D

Pretty footage tho ... amazing detail.

Why not shooting raw at full HD 1920 x 1080 - I thought this was already possible on the 5D3 ?

@ makomoulage

I don't think the aliasing is at all bad on that clip ! It's a 5D2 and the camera is prone to some moire / aliasing.

I think the raw footage is incredibly sharp which can make aliasing more apparent. However, I see aliasing and moire on tv all the time ... most of my clients don't even know it's a problem most of the time.  ;D

@ Kabuto1138

Good news about 14bit 1880 x 1058 recording duration of 272 frames. Is that at 24 or 25 fps ?

What made you buy Lexar 1000x CF card ? They are pretty expensive compared to Komputer Bay / Transcend cards ? I'm looking to buy new card and wonder which to get. :)

Is there still a 2Gb limit on raw to .dng files with Mac using ML converter ? Is it possible to use the free Adobe raw to dng converter ?

I've just installed ML today and would like to try raw recording soon.  ;D

Is it likely that we will ever get perpetual 14bit raw recording with 5D2 ?

@ Mageye and Haysuess - Thanks for confirming what i thought. So the 'native' output for 5D2 is 1880 pixels wide ...

Does that mean the perfect recording size would be 1880 x 1058 (or something) to make 16:9 ?

I'm guessing this would be possible at 12 bit if 14 bit proves to be too high for the 5D2 hardware ?

Just to recap ... the 5D2 is limited to 65mb/s by the hardware not just by the CF card speeds ?

Is 14 bit 25fps 1880 x 1058 likely to be achieved with Magic Lantern sometime soon ? Or am i gonna need to upgrade to the 5D3  ? :(

This Magic Lantern Raw Recording is all quite incredible ... It breathes new life into my 5D2 and somewhat over shadows yesterday's news for Canon 1DC owners of 25fps at 4K. I'm guessing my 5D2 will be almost as good a quality if it eventually shoots raw at 14 bit 1080p 25fps.  ;D

I'm asking the same question Clemens - What bit depth will be possible with 5D2 and full 1920 x 1080 ?

I'm not claiming to be an expert, but this article seems to suggest very little difference between 12 bit colour and 14 bit colour.

http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/nikon-d300-d3-14-bit-versus-12-bit.html

I'd think i'd be happy with just 12bit 25fps on my 5D2 if it can shoot full HD - or is 1880 pixels the widest it can go ? All this info is such a lot to get your teeth in to  ;D

With 150-160Mb/sec speeds ...

Thoughts anyone ?

Well said Dak29 - that is f*cking awesome news !!!

All we now need is to fix the moire and extend the record times on the 5D2 !

In my work rolling shutter won't be an issue as they are whip pans ...

Is it likely we'll be able to get 25fps too - I'm in PAL land UK ?

Damn you Magic Lantern guys are Gods !  ;D
