General Chat / Re: Canon CPS service - I'm stunned.
August 14, 2013, 10:41:18 PM
Ok, the situation has been remedied. Canon is offering a "one time" courtesy fix of the camera. The supervisor I spoke to has been fantastic.

Here's my theory: whomever opened the box at the repair center slashed the camera inadvertently with a boxcutter. This clearly looks like that kind of a slash to me. Obviously I was stunned when they sent me the picture today.

Canon is replacing the SD card board, the main PCB board, and the top piece that was damaged. They are also cleaning the sensor and "bringing it back to factory specs".

Next time I will though take extensive pictures before I ship it back. I would bet $1000 that someone with a boxcutter on the receiving end did this, but what can I prove?

You be the judge.

Also, obviously their slash had 0 to do with the prior fail(ing) SD card slot.

EDIT by SDX: image width is 900px max.

General Chat / Canon CPS service - I'm stunned.
August 14, 2013, 01:38:21 AM
5d3, purchased the end of November. Under warranty.
SD card stops working. Camera will not power on with any SD card inserted; tried 5 different ones.

I'm a CPS member. Sent camera back to Canon last week for repair.
Camera has never been dropped, dinged, scratched, out in the rain, harmed in any way. Always babied. Camera was in mint condition when I mailed it back (mailed back in very safe packaging.

Get an email today that states:

I called CPS services and asked to see PROOF of the damage. They are supposed to get back with me tomorrow. I am stunned. Beside myself. If there was even a time when I thought it could have been damaged I would certainly admit it. But there wasn't. Ever.

What would you do if you KNEW the camera wasn't damaged? Also especially if you're reading about other people on here having SD slots fail?

Will gladly help out on testing once my 5d3 comes back from Canon (the SD card slot died!)   :'(

If the audio beep isn't in sync, then what's the point?  Why don't you just use a slate (or clap your hands for that matter)?  It's not difficult at all to sync up that way.  People have done it this way for over 80 years, so why not do it (at least until they get the accompanying audio issues ironed out)?

I agree - the thing for me is the run and gun stuff; if I have my Zoom recorder in a shock proof mount on the hotshoe then I have no room to affix my external LCD.  I know there are workarounds for this too like using a cage but at the end of the day it's very handy having the camera record the audio.

Figured it out - was using "Bachelor" to unpack the raw files, and it had an older version of Dcraw.exe in it.  Problem fixed.

Shot some raw video today and when unpacking with the raw2dng.exe it gets about halfway and then:

"Error: mallocixels"

Also, I used to use a grey card; don't really need to anymore with raw.

I guess I was just put off by your "you can't even call AE/ACR a workflow" when right now IMO it's the ONLY workflow you need.  Raw2dng - Adobe AE, output.

I pulled down Speedgrade CC and I don't get a preview with 14 bit DNG files.  I'm sure if you converted it to another format it'd be fine - but that certainly takes the "speed" out of "speedgrade".  :)

@Shield there's a long way to go, to get "maximum quality". ironically mvejerslev hinted to one point, the correction just do his job (A) if there are metadata and (B) on the full picture - not on the crop 1:1 video (where we get the most quality;) ) - finally you're estimating the correction? So, in resolve you can correct the vignetting with a mask as well, estimated.. The main critics on other (professional&enthusiast) websites is the accuracy of the LUT, color matrices - nothing, ML can fulfill by now.

Do you own a gretagMacbeth colorcard?

In terms of speed ACR is no winner, in terms of "correcting dngs" ACR is way better than all other apps, but shoving sliders is not "maximum quality", but wrenching "filmlook" into it, completely subjective.. Resolve is no ideal tool as well - but discussing about "maximum quality" is kind of funny..

IF adobeworld and workflow, so give speedgrade a try. (then you will see, we're far from being done!)

I don't see how a mask is going to look right unless you're shooting a scene where the background or camera do not move.  Try panning from a bright area to a darker one and see how your mask holds up - I'll stick with AE for now...:)

>when it can correct my lens profiles for vignetting

Right. Once you have copied the correct EXIF data into your DNGs.

Just select a Canon lens; even if it's another brand.  Goodbye vignette.

Anyone know of a way to make the "beep" louder when the recording begins?  Might make it easier to sync on my timeline.
Thanks,
Shawn

dng is a adobe-invention and uses the acr-wrapper :) it's not native - or better, its wrong to call it workflow, regardless of 8 or 16bit :)

I sure as hell call ACR / AE "the workflow" when it can correct my lens profiles for vignetting and has the superior quality output.  To each their own.  IMO it's the "only" way to go - we're shooting raw for maximum quality; it's just not there YET with resolve.

I agree with you hjfilm - I just can't get the "look" out of resolve that I can with Adobe After effects and the ACR.  For example, I can't use lens corrections in resolve, and I shoot quite a bit with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC; it vignettes a tad wide open.  I also just can't get the highlights and shadows to look as nice.  On the other hand, considering how much faster (and free) Resolve is I'm all for hoping it gets better.
#63
Well I bought a new i7 4770k cpu + mobo and I have this test render down to about 50 seconds.

Since I kept both of them, yesterday I came home and had both machines rendering for me at the same time.  What a time saver!
#64
So which apps other than resolve / Adobe CC support DNG sequences?  Would love a nice easy to use (fast) NLE editor to import my footage into.  I pulled down Davinci Resolve Lite yesterday and it's very fast, but I sure miss the ease of use of Adobe After effects (and the ACR sliders).
#65
Like for example, does SpeedGrade CS6 support DNG sequence imports?  Anyone know?
#66
Is there one?  I've been reading and searching for a while and I'm starting to get a headache.

From my own use, I can confirm that Adobe After Effects v6 will open and import a DNG sequence.

Premiere Pro 6 / Sony Vegas 11 will not.  Both will do other sequences, like .jpg sequences.

From what I've read the latest version of Davinci Resolve will do it.

Anyone have any others?  I don't want to spend all day extracting and converting to many other file formats, and the bummer about Adobe After effects (even the latest CC version) is it doesn't support CUDA for exporting H264.  It will use CUDA for 3d rendering and to speed up previews, but not for actual rendering.

Well it seems one cannot render fast enough.  I've been thinking about upgrading my i7 920 from late 2008; now I'm not as sure as before.  This thread will hopefully be for people to post their hardware setup (ram/mobo/cpu/overclock speed (if applicable) CS version number and render time.

There's a sample Adobe after effects project here:
http://benchmark.slashcam.de/AE_RENDERTEST.aep

The results of the fastest time are here (in Deutsche, just for you)

http://benchmark.slashcam.de/

For reference, my pc is running an Asus P6T, 12GB ram, Windows 7 64 bit, i7 920 @ 3.38 GHZ (overclocked), crappy video card, AE CS6
My time was 83 seconds no matter if I allocated 4 threads or 8 to it.

Seems ram makes a HUGE part of rendering.

There's a I7 3930K w/64GB ram that did it in 41 seconds.
Same I7 3930K w/32GB; 56 seconds.  20GB?  82 seconds (but I'm not convinced he was doing it right)

Hell there's an i7 980 w/24GB that did it in 49 seconds.  My mobo supports a 980 chip.

Still pouring over the results - keep in mind there's lots of "tweaks" you can do to AE6 in the multiprocessor section; I'm not surprised mine is the fastest as I've tweaked the settings.

Please share your results.

I do not think rendering 25 at 24 is a solution.. it is often gives artifacts as frames are changed. It would be better to fix this bug in Lantern itself.. ]

Well it doesn't matter anyway - the audio was worse recording and rendering at 25p.  For a 4 minute clip, the audio was about 10 seconds short, and not synched at the beginning either - I had to move the audio about a second ahead in the beginning to sync.  Then it quickly went out of sync - seemed to be off 2-3 seconds easily per minute of recording.

Going back to 23.976.  Good idea though.

I shouldn't do this when I'm tired.  Will report back in (had stupid 23.976 interpreted footage!!) @#$@#$%@$%
#70
While I'm waiting for this crap to render, I'm curious if my card(s) can handle 25FPS in 1:1 mode.  As a point of reference, the "idle time" going from 23.976 to 25.0001 FPS went from 10% to 5%.  Will report back in.

*Edit* The 1:1 mode @ 25.0001 FPS override was no problem.  7% idle.  With audio.

zzzz still rendering....

Wow... imagine that you solved it... this is why 600D would record audio with flush rate and all that junk at 25 fps. Guess it holds true for all cameras... defaults to 25fps "sync".

I just recorded the most boring 4 minutes of my life of me standing, talking and clapping.  Will report in shortly.  This will be sweet if so - should just be able to drag a 25fps clip onto the timeline and render as 23.976.  :)

Hello,
There seem to be a bug.. even few. .. correct me if I am wrong

1) When camera has 24 fps set... lantern does record as 25fps.FPS ovveride is off.

I have found this issue with a help of the sound. So here how to test: Enable sound recording.. put camera to 24 fps and record raw with sound when somebody is speaking, so that the lips are visible in the frame. At least for 10 seconds or so.
Now take video as 23,976 and put sound .. and you will see that is synchs at the begining and then fails more and more to the end.

IF I take and conform video as 25 fps.. and put it with the same sound.. everything synchs perfectly for the whole length of the clip.
Seems like a bug ,no?

I wonder if this is what's been up with the audio all along.  Will test this immediately!

Can you export to XDCAM EX?  Should be the bottom option, and will render like a 35MB mp4 file.
#74
Shot from F/4 or so to F/16.

#75
Well I just shot all evening and did not notice this with the June 17th build.
Only difference?  Instead of doing the auto-ISO / then hit AEL before recording, I just used ISO 100.  No idea, but I just used my variable ND filter to adjust exposure and all was well.

I will say though that the sun wasn't in the shot and/or extreme shifts from dark to light in the footage.  Will test again tomorrow.
