Looking forward to it, Vikado :)

I love seeing this camera in action!

I shot some Chroma Key scenes with my 5d2 for a short, its in post now and I can't wait to see the outcome. The VFX guy was very pleased with the 14 bit quality of the chromas.
oh that's real good to hear.
prores or dnxhd?
and after just a few takes, my 5d was getting real real hot!

Hi Vikado, have you try to select ML grayscale from the RAW-->Preview menu? This always works with my EVF and external monitor! When you have to monitor directly from the DSLR screen you have to choose Canon.
hey thanks!
i needed a monitor during a shoot for the director and  for really tight shots as well.
the white framing kept on getting wonky so i decided to tape up the monitor screen where the white frames are supposed to be.
it worked, but its good to know there's an ML option to make it work properly.
also, i've noticed the hdmi connection kept on getting disconnected during the shoot,
so i think im going to invest in one of those HDMI lock ports to insure connection never gets dropped with the slightest bump.

EDIT:
btw, we shot a comedy short last week with my 5dm2 with the oct.4 build.
it was only a one day shoot, which lasted about 15hours.
used about 400GB of raw footages and going the ACR route instead of Resolve.
i spent the last few days processing the raw files and syncing them up with the audio files.
and just by scrubbing through the takes, besides the dead pixels, they're are looking great.
no major errors so far.
i should have a final cut in a about 2 weeks or so to show.

I'm round-tripping between Resolve and Premiere (create proxies through Resolve, create rough cut in Premiere, re-link and colour in Resolve, do final corrections, sound mixing etc. in Premiere) as in the following tutorial:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jASBwVSOlXk/youtube]

i actually prefer this workflow too, but when i import footage into resolve, i get hot/dead pixels.
but when i import that same footage into After effects/ACR. those hot/dead pixels are gone.
how are you handling dead pixels in that workflow?

raw-dng, open via acr in ae. do proxys in ae, safe projekt.
open premiere, import ae sequence.
now you have 16 bit Video in premiere, easy to edit because of the proxies. if you re done, just click next to the proxys in ae to uncheck them for full resolution and bitrate in premiere.
that s the easiest workflow i figured out so far
is this the same workflow you're talking about?

when connecting to an external monitor via hdmi.
sometimes the white rectangle recording area is only showing one white line instead of showing 4 lines to make a rectangle and that one white line is way off where its supposed to be.
anyway to fix this?
thank you in advance.
v2.3.next.2012OCT04.5D2212

also had Recording frame set to White rect. and Global draw at "always on"

managed a workaround for the white framing problem.
if you turn on your camera first and then you connect your monitor via hdmi port,
the framing will be correct, but if you connect your hdmi while your camera is off and then you turn on your camera,
you'll get the white framing issues.
i kept repeating it and it kept on repeating the same result.

Hi. When I try to open a folder, where imported by raw2cdng files are located, in Resolve it hangs up and closed with error. What can be wrong? Im using 16bit linear and 15% white unchecked when importing. AE opens without problem.
Some example of DNGs:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2NWwDUimG9cOGEyOGEwMjUtZDYyNC00ZmUyLWIyZDgtMzhmNjE4ZWU5NTMy&usp=sharing
i had the same issue.
do you have a graphics card installed?
if you do, turn off your integrated graphics chip in your bios.
i turned mines off and it solved the problem.
something about how resolve crashes if there's a gpu and integrated gpu both on.

are dead/hot pixels less of an issue on the 5d3 vs other cameras?
i've noticed dead pixels on a 5d2/7d/600d.

Raw Video / Re: is fps override necessary?

If you want 23.976 then use canons menu.
If you want 24fps exactly (instead of 23.976 which is NTSC imitation)
then use ML.
thanks!

Raw Video / is fps override necessary?
October 17, 2013, 10:07:52 AM
Im going to be shooting a short soon.
Gonna use a 5dm2 with the oct4 build.
Can i leave the fps override off and just set the fps at 24fps via canon menus?
Or is it safer to use fps override at 23.976.
I apologize in advance if im not giving any other critical info.
Thanks!

im getting green fringing with the oct.4 build for my mk2.
but only on the 10-bit, but 12bit and 16bit are fine.
this is for the 1.3.0 version

where do i get this font folder?

I format from camera BUT a computer format i noticed can be that little bit better, but with hacks on and camera warm up i get nice write speeds, i hit 83mb today :)
whoa. 83mb. that's awesome.
doesn't matter but isn't that close to the write speed for 1920x1080?
and which card?
#41
what's are the steps for optimum speed write again?
like do i have to format the card on a card reader or inside the camera?

Is that rig of yours under water?

i read somewhere that certain stock of the 2600k die can reach 4.8-4.9ghz. unfortunately its only a small portion of that stock.
iirc, there are numbers on the die itself to tell if you can reach 4.8+ghz.
im using a Thermalright Silver Arrow cooler.

wonderful!
you rock, brother!
keep up the great work!

I hardly believe, that "this" alpha-beta-importer would be awaken again. So, beside CDNG there are some more rawlike-Codecs supported. Yes, i think, its a better one :D

regards chmee

hi chmee, off-topic question, have you thought about adding options to your raw2cndg for normal CDNG, Lossless, and Lossy?
i like your utility the best.
thanks!
#45
cs5.5 had a cinemaDNG importer plugin.
tried it on both cs6 and 5.5.
CDNG sequences i imported did not playback in realtime and that's without any effects layers.
so i wont be excited until the update is out and tested.
here's hoping this update will do a better job of crunching CDNG sequences.
it would be of great benefit.  ;D

is the possibility to record past the 4gb limit baked into the ML raw module by default; or do I need to tweak something to make it happen past 4gb? THANKS
its a fat32 limitation. exfat formated cards like the mark iii has can record past 4gb.
what magic lantern does is that it will keep recording, but it will break down the files into <4gb files.
what you then do, is a simple drop and drag of those spanned files into a program like rawanizer/raw2cdng and the utility will automitically process those files into a single DNG sequence.

Hello,

I know there is a software to convert raw files to cinemaDNG on windows, but I can not find it anymore. Can someone point me to it?

Thanks

Hey there, i'm much workin.. so, finally i dont really will continue the raw2cdng-tool - all changes and small patches (if..!) are only tests for the forthcoming mlv2cdng-tool - MLV is in every form the better approach to stabilize the raw-revolution - and mlv2cdng will be coded from scratch as a commandline-tool with an external GUI. please be patient.

But back to raw2cdng: i thought about integrating exif-data from a cr2-file into the metadata of the dng. by now i only read the RGGB_Levels_measured from the cr2-makernotes and convert them into the dng-AsShotNeutral-Values. If someone's up to test that, feel free to write, if it helps/works in ACR or Resolve.

The Approach is easy - right before recording movie, do a photo. put both into the same path and give the CR2-file the same name.

Example:
M02-2221.RAW
M02-2221.CR2

raw2cdng will recognise the file automatically (it will be shown up with +CR2 in the importlist, same as splitted files..). It's tested by now only with a 5DIII. By the Way, if you're recording a whole set with the same whitebalance, you can name this one photofile ALL.CR2 and all files in the importlist will use this data - except the files having their own CR2.

Example:
M02-2201.RAW (will use ALL.CR2)
M02-2221.RAW (will use M02-2221.CR2)
M02-2221.CR2
M02-2312.RAW (will use ALL.CR2)
ALL.CR2

raw2cdng v1.3.0 - with CR2-whitebalance

Hi, I am new in the magic lantern world, just got a brand new 5d m3, I was wondering, what kind of a computer do I need to process all this data? Thanks!
just to process raw to dng sequence or dnxhd444/prores444?
you dont need a lot of cpu power to crunch through raw files.
the difficulty is playing back those DNGs in realtime on resolve or your NLE.
i have two computers running an overclocked 2600k set to 4.9ghz, 32gb 1600mhz RAM, one has a gtx 570 and the other a gtx 580.
playback in realtime is fine. i use proxies on premiere so the real resource hog is in resolve, where i'll get dropped frames during playback when i start to use noise reduction on a node.
so my recommendation is to get a gtx 680 or above to be on the safe side or maybe a 670 if you're short on funds.
as for myself, im going to buy a gtx780 before we start on our feature.

@vikado because i m out of home im thankful to see some picture-examples and im excited, my idea works :) So.. facing this example i'm not sure, if my whitebalance-correction is needed.. Did you try (asShot) in ACR? My idea was indeed a neutral whitebalance, not a pleasing (subjective!) one - the question is, what is easier to handle? changing a neutral picture into a warm one or correcting a tint into neutral :)

regards chmee
here is the breakdown between the two files. http://i.imgur.com/JRuSweJ.jpg
left side is the dng with 1.3.0 and the right is the 1.2.1.
both having "as shot" and "auto" for comparison.

based on what the light source is (single tungsten), you'll see that ACR set to auto is the most accurate, in my humble opinion.

Quotethe question is, what is easier to handle? changing a neutral picture into a warm one or correcting a tint into neutral :)
changing the kelvin values and not touching the tint is best, (i think)

Hi,

I am missing something here. I copied a *.CR2 file and name it the same as the RAW video file and dragged both on the raw2cdng convertor. The interface opens. What next?
open the utility first and then drag and drop the .cr2 file and the raw. you'll see a (+cr2) after the raw file.
plus, you dont have to rename the .cr2 file, and if you do, just rename it "ALL.cr2" like he mentioned and use that for all your conversions.

btw, chmee, i noticed a noticeable difference of white balance between your utility and adobe camera raw(7.0).
adobe camera raw white balance was set to "auto". temperature at  "2850". and Tint set to "+24"
the light source was a typical tungsten lightbulb on a lamp, where the shade of the lamp gave off a warmer diffusion of the light.
i felt the proper white balance was more true on adobe camera raw vs your utility.
even though yours looked right, it was a bit off based on the light source.
hope this was insightful :)
link below of comparison.
