Right, I found it, had to overwrite raw_info.bits_per_pixel=12; in raw2dng.

Now the image is good, only the colors are messed up.

Looks like this in irfan view (doesn't open in ACR):

(It's the bottom of a (very dirty) window)

Too bad the 'Predator' franchise is finished... :-/

Has anyone tested this on a 5D3 yet with the fastest card?

*I'm excited!

Mayo: what camera are you on? Settings?

The big question is...

Is it going to be possible to shoot 3.6k @ 24fps, 10bit on the 5D3 without dropping frames?

If the percentages listed by d are correct, that would put the 3592 x 1320 at about 5MB/frame with a throughput of ~120MB/sec...  a bit much for most cards, but possible?

Is there anyway to drop it even lower to 8bit?  *I'd rather have color information... but if the resolution can be achieved it would certainly be a bonus.  :-)

Do we know if this could be applied to higher resolutions than 1080p, or would the camera not be able to handle it?
#306
I wonder if implementing something like this on the 5D3 would make it easier to shoot at higher resolutions in crop mode?

Does anyone have the numbers on what the theoretical MB/frame would be at 3.6k 10bit?
#307
Not in the 5D3, or any other DSLR....  they used the old standard and top out at 20MB/sec

I would settle for 1 simple red frame, and a 1 frame synced beep from the headphone jack.

I don't think we need anything fancy.

I got back a short mail from ESS kabel that they don't sell to private customers.
Also, my questions about which combinations of adapters/cables would fit went unanswered.

It's a pity really, they don't understand that they are missing potential market if it works.
:(

The market potential really isn't that big... and you know it.  Sure, a lot of them will be sold within the first 2-6 months... but once you have it you'll never need another one.

If you want to talk market... there is a bigger, more profitable market for some smart (and daring) company to physically modify the camera to take a SSD.  But even then... the market really isn't that big.

That is pretty cool, but I think it is probably a way off from possible.

What we really need is faster, bigger CF cards... or a specially designed CF to ANYTHING FASTER converter.

There is no magic here.  What we need to make this more practical simply doesn't exist yet...

If you can design the computer-in-a-grip... go for it! :-)  But I'd rather see a SSD dock-in-a-grip with a CF converter...

It really isn't worth posting "test videos" of your raw footage if it isn't something that benefits from being shot in raw.

Stable, in focus, and scenes in bright daylight (in high contrast conditions) or low-light at night make the most sense to post.

I've noticed that lots of people are posting videos that they didn't color correct and I don't understand the point of that...

If you're aim is just to test the workflow, you don't always have to post... but make sure to report on any issues or odd instances
that you encounter.  Let the developers know so they can make it a more stable 'upgrade'.

Make sure to have fun!

Raw Video / [IMPOSSIBLE/PATENTED] RAW to R3D
May 22, 2013, 03:34:35 AM
Hi,
I know you're all hoping that I totally just found an awesome way of converting EOS Raw to Red R3D files... it would be cool wouldn't it?

I didn't.  I'm sorry.

But since we are talking about hacking here... and R3D files are much much much more widely compatible with NLEs... would it be possible?

Anyone try the Delkin 1050X 64GB?  I'm wondering if the 120MB/sec write speed is real...

#314
So with the KomputerBay 64GB 1000X cards, you still have to turn the audio off?  Aren't the benchmarks showing they're running at about 95MB/sec?  Recording 1920X1080 produces frames @ 3.5MB, right?  Around 84MB/sec?  How much space is taken up by the audio?

Would it be possible to leave 1 channel of audio for reference... or is that not possible?  Can the audio be recorded to the SD?  *read some mumbles about that...

Camera tests = more cat and dog videos online...  :-\

I find that the average shot (on a non-hacked camera for work), for me, rolls for around 2-3 mins for each take.

That would be a 15-16GB .RAW file, wouldn't it?

What is the issue with the converters not being able to convert past 4GB?  Could you break a larger file up into 4GB segments before converting it?

How likely do you think it would be that we will be able to roll for 2-3 mins?

#317
And it isn't possible to get the camera to process each frame as an individual .RAW file?
#318
I read yesterday that figuring out how to record past the 4gb file size limit "should be possible" but other things are a priority at the moment - like assigning a start/stop button for raw recording.

So.... (to the developers) which button were you thinking?  I'd like it to be the shutter release!  :-)  Can we vote?

What about a CF extender cable?  They make those!

CF to IDE adapters seem like they're merely PIN converters!  So they should be BI-directional, right?

#320
There are CF extenders that were designed to move CF ports to different places that might be of help!

Google - CF extender.

OK, if using CPU is out of the question then only option is to try to offload the data to CF interface as quick as possible.

As far as I understand, EDMAC has >600MB/sec throughput so as long as CF can swallow it, there is nothing stopping you to record higher resolutions and/or framerates.

Theoretically there is nothing preventing someone from using for example , Ti TMS320VC54x DSP as "faux CF-card" and letting it shuffle data further to SSD. :D

Current CF UDMA7 raw-interface speed is 167MB/sec so that would suffice for 1080p50 raw :D

I think it is entirely possible to send the data that is offloading to the CF to a higher speed SSD via some sort of CF extender cable to SSD converter.  Fortunately, CF extender cables do exist... but currently there is no SSD to CF converter.

It has to be possible.  If one of you knows how to do it, go for it!  You'll be a millionaire thousandaire overnight!

This would solve all throughput problems and storage issues recording RAW from a DSLR if it worked, wouldn't it?
#322
I don't want this post to get off topic, but yes HDMI out is indeed an upgrade.

It may not be as clean as RAW, but storage-wise and being able to go straight into an NLE is pretty amazing.

I'd rather shoot raw, but when your camera is working for a living... speed is everything.
#323
Sadly, I've upgraded to 1.2.1 and my 5D3 is being used with an Atomos for a project... so I can't test this builds out until it is done.

But, I was thinking... the main problem it seems we're dealing with here is the write speed of the CF cards, right?

There are plenty of companies that make CF to SSD converters... there HAS to be a way to adapter SSD to CF.  Right?

That would solve all the issues of speed, and storage with raw shooting.  Some sort of external module with a cable connector
and a pin converter...

Or am I just being hopeful?
